That’s an awesome project! Must have been pretty satisfying when that rebar finally came loose. Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Good job, Phil.. Lots of time and effort. Btw, I have two rubber duckies if you want to start on them.

Put a quick coat of gray rustoleum on it to see what it will look like. Got my quote from SnF and it'll be in the mail by the end of the week.

Saw one at a gun show this past weekend at a dealers table. It was a carbine with an A2 upper, MP between the front sight legs, C mark near muzzle, 3rd gen stock. He would not sell it. Said he gave a guy $60 for it. Sadly, I don’t remember the markings on it.

Joe, maybe this is what he had:

BRD is a terrible thing. Ordered a set of the "project" M16 furniture from Sarco which includes the handguards, buttstock, and C marked pistol grip for only 19.95. Ordered a Brownell's XM16E1 lower receiver, on sale for 99.95. Got a complete barrel assembly from the EE, and I'm almost done. This rubber duckie upper will breathe fire once again.

Getting closer. I have flat black hi temp spray paint on the upper temporarily just to get a rough idea what she'll look like when done. The upper is going to SnF next week for anodizing. I should have her completed in about two weeks.

It's ironic that up-thread I state that of the 30-40 rubber ducks that I have examined, not one appeared to have been made with a real upper, and then this weekend I purchased FOUR of them at a show. All four have original stocks, barrels, front sight assemblies, rear sight assemblies (one with a dimpled pin), three prong flash hiders, and uppers. Two of the uppers are CK forge code, and two have no forge codes. They came from Ft. Leonard Wood MO.

Good base for a fallout/cosplay/display piece to have some fun with.

My rubber duckie was exactly like one of those. The barrel only goes into the handguard about 8 inches or so, then there is a section of rebar that connects the handguard portion to the upper receiver. The usable parts from the barrel section will be the handguard cap, FSB, and flash hider. The upper receiver/ rear sight will be usable, everything else (stock, lower receiver, handguards) is just solid black plastic.

Upper came back from SnF today. There must be issues with my upper because there were spots all over that didn't properly anodize. The color is really nice, it is their preban gray.
Attached File Attached File I oiled the receiver up really good, and it looks much better now. My Brownell's lower receiver is a blem, so the color is off a bit which is perfectly fine for me. The military issued rifles were often mismatched anyways. I put everything together really quick and here she is. Attached File Attached File I don't have the barrel fully torqued on yet, I'm waiting for my port door to arrive before I do the final assembly. |

That turned out nice.

I wouldn't worry about the spots. It looks good to me and they're not very noticeable anyway. The lower looks TOO new, actually. Maybe it needs some "antiquing" to match up better.
I'd suspect that the upper spotting might have something to do with the fact that you've shot it with a coat of paint at least twice since starting the stripping process. I would not have done that. I would want to do everything I can to avoid doing anything that might possibly cause contamination issues. |
|
That's exactly what SnF said about it. I had no idea that spray paint would have done that.
|
|
Aluminum is a rather porous metal, and any type of contamination that gets into the aluminum will become a barrier to anodizing.
I would’ve guessed that the contamination was residual epoxy, rather than the residue from something as weak as spray paint. |

Just got done installing the barrel. She's now 100% done and ready to rock and roll. I figure I have about $600 into it which is still cheaper than a finished Brownell's XM16E1, and the only repro parts are the barrel and lower receiver. It was a fun project, I'd recommend it to all you rubber duckie owners.

Now you'll have me looking for rubber duckies at gun shows.
Well, I don't recall ever finding one but a few years back I did find a model 602 upper assembly (no bolt or carrier, otherwise complete) still in cosmoline at a gun show. Bought it for 200 bucks cash. I bought it with the intent of using it for a retro A1 build. It was PERFECT. Never had a round through it since it was proof tested at the Colt factory prior to cosmoline treatment. I found that I didn't have the heart to be the first guy to shoot it after it had survived 40+ years untouched. I sold it to a guy who's a major player in the class III world, to use it to complete a period correct model 602 build. Made a decent profit on it. Best of all, to me, is that it's been used to complete a first rate restoration/rebuild of a classic, and an expensive one at that. |
