| Years ago I owned a rock river arms rifle in 458 socom, and foolishly sold it. I thoroughly enjoyed it despite the ammo cost as a non-reloader. As I age, I'm seriously considering getting another one to enjoy while I can. My question is there still ample support for this round? I've googled it some and it does not seem as though there is a lot of excitement for it anymore?....thanks for any info/thoughts |

If you do get another one, I would suggest having some fun with it loaded with #9 or #12 shot in Speer 45 LC shot capsules. You would have to reload them yourself but it would be with it. I had some nice house runs with those loads and some others loaded similar to 410 PDX1. Also, PDX1 style loads will cut a coyote in half at about 30 feet. |

I got a 500 case of Starline brass (still manufactured) on sale at Midway right after I built my first one. A set of RCBS dies (still manufactured) were purchased right after. I have Lil'Gun (still produced) coming out of bodily orifices and I doubt 458 projos are going to dry up any time soon. I don't see what the concern is? A quality barrel from Tromix is about the only even remotely exotic purchase you need to make and it ain't that exotic. I went 10.5 lightweight. He even sells them with the bolt if you choose. After that, it's all standard AR fare. Even the magazines. And it thumps. Puts a smile on my face every time. Accupoint 1-4. EDIT - You mentioned you're a non-reloader. Not hard to buy ammo but you really should reload. A minimal investment in a single stage press for this round alone would pay back in only a couple hundred rounds. Cheapest on ammoseek is $1.37 and not great stuff. Even buying brass, you can do better than that on your first round of ammo and it gets substantially cheaper for subsequent batches by reusing brass. SOCOM is not a hard round on brass so you could likely expect 10+ reloads on new brass. Most of my brass is only twice fired. |

I don't know why I never contemplated this, as I've been fascinated with revolvers like the Taurus' Judge line that shoot .45 Colt / .410. I'm not a reloader myself, but I would be curious to see how they pattern from a .458 SOCOM barrel at different distances and with different twist rates. I mean, it's neat, but if the pattern spreads as fast as they do with the longer Judge revolvers, there are limitations. That's not a criticism of the concept, more curiosity about effective application. |

The SOCOM is officially CIP registered, so 'open domain' (CIP = European version of SAAMI). Several ammo manufacturers, with SBR being the main one Several bullets being made specifically for it, including the Barnes 300 TTSX. But you can't go wrong with the 300 gr JHP Several companies making barrels or complete uppers, Tromix being the 'go to', however, RRA still produces them as well Starline makes the brass; Lee, CH4D and others make dies |

| I've got a 12" tromix and I freaking love it. Its a thumper for sure. Everyone who shoots it laughs because it looks like an SBR but feels like a 12ga, make huge holes and is surprisingly accurate at distance (I typically shoot it up to 200 yards). I got into reloading to feed this thing and now I reload just about every cartridge I shoot. |

I’ve got the 12.5” light profile and It’s my go to brush gun. One of these days I’ll put another rmr or rcr on it. Attached File My buddy has a 12.5” Tromix he got a moose with last year. One shot, and it flopped over with a 300gr Hornady Interlock I put together for him. |

OP, I think some of the initial excitement has been tempered by competitive cartridges and platforms: .350 Legend & .400 Legend took some of the low end away, and are legal to hunt w/ in the straightwall states. The DPMS G2, the POF Rogue, and the late lamented Ruger SFAR brought .308 into a much lighter platform, the Rogue being under 6 lbs for a 16" .308. |
