The .300 Whisper and the 6.5 Grendel have significantly different capabilities. |
For general purpose use, the 6.5 Grendel is probably the best pick for the AR15. You can hunt medium size game including deer and hog. You can do long range hunting as in mountains or beanfield. It qualifies for major class in most competitions. It is highly accurate for target shooting - 1/2 MOA or better by all reports. You can get inexpensive ammo from Wolf at $10.99 a box or less. The .300 Whisper is a fairly specialized and ammo/reloading costs will be higher. |

Wolf is adding steel cased 6.5 Grendel ammo in addition to their brass cased Gold line - steel cased stuff is due 2nd Quarter 07. www.65grendel.com has now added its 1000th member! An increase of almost double since five-hundred and something last year. Congratulations John on a successful website.

I'm interested in buying a 6.5 Grendel Upper from Alexander Arms (despite the long wait I will probably have to endure). Their website unfortunately doesn't give very good details as to the specs of their 24" Advanced Weapon System Upper. Anyone have the scoop on this Upper? The Rail System it uses, the gas block, is the barrel threaded? Anyone have pictures of Alexander Arms various Upper Assemblies? Thanks! |

In the first place I've owned a SR25 in 308 win and I wouldn't own another, (too damn heavy) 2nd place, you have any real first hand documentation that Grendel bolts are breaking? Or is this M9 covert

Nope, thats not me. I think the bolts will actually hold up fairly well when they are only subjected to the anemic pressure levels that factory loads are limted too. I just don't think it will take much hotrodding. M9 PS I'm open to attempts to change my mind. What pressure level are these bolts proofed at? Are they proofed at all? US mil 5.56 bolts are proofed @ 70,000 PSI. Each & every one. |

I just wrote POF about launching their upper in 6.5. Here were their responces: Thanks for the inquiry. fnfal et al: Yes, I've seen that, as well as the Wolf gold and the steel cased stuff (out yet?) I guess the question why doesn't that compute with POF? What will it take for them to accept that "commercial" ammo is available? Which brings me to this question: what would it take to buy a 5.56 or 7.62 upper and make it a 6.5? Is it as simple as a barrel change? Or is it alot more complicated than that? I'm brand new to the 6.5, but am loving what I'm hearing, both here and also with the local rhetoric at the HiPower matches I attend. Just don't know how to get it/build it in the platform I want yet. Thanks, Nick |

Schultze, Any good leads on decent 6.5 bolts and barrels? I know this is a big topic, but would appreciate y'all's favorites for these two items. Only the bolt and barrel? Man, that sounds too easy! Would that only work on a 5.56 platform, or could it also work on a 7.62 NATO platform (i.e., POF's new 7.26 AR they have out)? Demonstrating my ignorance... Nick |

www.saternbarrels.com or something like that. Barrel, bolt, and barrel extension provided. Any barrel length, fluting I think, profile, etc. Check 'em out. They are supposedly a quality manufacturer. AA is using them for the higher end builds I think. They do .50Beo too, but we gotta get uppers with opened ejection ports for those first. You can do it yourself, but it does not look good if you Dremel it. The 6.5G upper receiver is a stock one by the way. That's great news about the WOLF ammo! Model 1 Sales has 16", 18" and 20" 6.5 Grendel uppers in stock now according to an e-mail I recieved last week! I'm not sure how everyone here feels about M1S, but I am willing to give one a try if they stand by their products. I e-mailed them back to get specifics about twist, bolts and barrel profiles. No responce yet.  Anybody got an opinion on M1S with their current 6.8 SPC reliability and accuracy? It dosen't have to shoot as good as a LesBear or AA for me. It does have to be dependable though. |
| Alright, I called Model 1 Sales today. The sales lady said that they had recieved a shipment of 6.5 Grendel barrels and were in the process of doing some testing on their own uppers. I believe she also said that they were waiting on some ammo. She said to check back with M1S in about a month to check on availablity but she wouldn't promise they would be ready. |

After looking over scores of the usual 5.56 uppers at the Model 1 table at the gun show 2 weeks ago here in Houston, I asked the guy "So where are all your 6.5 Grendels I keep hearing about that came in". All he replied to me was a lame "They're back at the shop". I quickly summized that I really didn't need to be sking him the obvious follow up question "Well, why did you leave them there in Illinois, when you and all the Grendel buyers are here now in Houston? I decided if such an almost incohernt and basically stupid reply was the the best answer he could offer me, then I didn't need to ask anything else. So, I looked back at him, waited a few seconds to see if that was all the had to say (it was), and I then simply walked away muttering to myself "What a moron". I'm sorry if you guys think this post might be rude. But, it might serve to inform the Model1 peolpe that if it must proceed with disappointing it's customers after weeks of anticipation, then perhaps they could act like they care when a frustrated customer ask them such a simple question. If it was me behind that table, I would have responded with at least half a smile; "I'm so sorry for the delay. They should be here any day now. Can I call you when they are available?" But what do I know?..... I don't sell gun barrels. I only run a service business and deal with people who pay my bills. |

No, it was a stupid answer, and told me nothing of what the status was. And at that point, I really didn't care to hear any excuses...nor should I have had to "guess". If I were a guide, and I greeted you at the hunting camp, and asked you "Where is your rifle?"and all you replied to me is "It's back at the house" with no other explanation. I would look at you and wonder if you were retarded. What is it you don't understand about a person who keeps you on a waiting with unexpected delays going into weeks, and in person shows up with nothing except the 5 word dialogue of an idiot with an IQ of 67 ? |

Above is the reason I'd hate to work in customer service industry, the man answered your question. Did you ever stop to think that with the negotiations that are going on with AA that they might not be at liberty to say much else? Either way grow a thicker skin. |

foob, you posted on the 6.5Grendel forum in the thrad about accuracy: So 5.56 isn't a 1/2 MOA rifle? You do know Les Baer guarantees 1/2 MOA on both Grendel and 5.56. Far as I see reading Les's website he says they are 223's, not 5.56. The rounds may be the same dimensions, but the chambers definitely not. I'll bet his chambers are of the 223 dimensions. So a 5.56 may not be as accurate as a 6.5 Grendel in the current rifles. |
They did - it was called the 7.62 NATO or 7.62x51. The 5.56 was adopted in the '60s. |

Um, The 7.62 NATO/7.62X51 is a .308 more or less, not .280. But you're right about the adoption of the 5.56 NATO bieng in the 60s. The 7.62 NATO was back in the 50s.Personally I think the 6.5X55 Sweede would be ideal, but that's just me.

Jim, it was adequate, but not great. In my opinion, it was less than it should have been. I just blasted the stuff at 25 and 50 yards with iron sights, so I don't know accuracy. Does a .5 inch group at 25 yards count? I think the main thing I'd say is it was inconsistent. Ejection was generally at 4:00, a couple flew out at 2:00. Some brass flew one foot, some four feet. In chambering and unchambering without firing, I noticed some bullet set-back issues. Now that I've tried reloading the brass, I think the brass is either too soft or not springy enough because I'm not getting good neck tension (although some guys are reloading it just fine). Conclusion? Good enough for blasting and hunting at 50¢ a round, but as far as I'm concerned the brass needs attention to be consistently reloadable. John, I thought my CSS barrel had the most non-existent throat there was, but the Wolf ammo chambers and unchambers without moving the bullet. As you know I shot mine ammo with a scope at 100 yards and I thought it was damn good enough for hunting. As Bill noted it's a little shy on velocity, but I think it will still do the job. As you know the 6.5 caliber had a lot of penetration as it is so maybe the lower velocity won't hurt it none. I have didn't reload my first box as you know because the primer pockets were too big, so I shipped it off to curlymaple and he's making key rings from it. I've yet to shoot another box. |
I would say Liability. Plus, you don't have to push the Grendel to get good results. If you are comparing to a .223 which is the only fair comparison, you will always win in terms of energy and drop without hot-rodding the Grendel. |
