Thinking about getting a clamp on Noveske Switch Block in mid gas for this (16" or 18" barrel).  Would 556 or 6.8 version be best?

Wolverine just has let know testing should resume this week...he has been on family business this weekend.

Jason, I don't think it makes a big difference on which block you use...provided, the gasport in the block is a least .098" in diameter.

Thanks.  Will try to ask Noveske directly also... i'm thinking 6.5 PCC is closer to a 6.8spc so would guess that may make more sense.

Placed my order for dies!  Thanks for the info and help

Your Welcome Jason, most of the gasblocks I've seen are drilled to .125" for the gasport...That doen't mean you shouldn't ask Noveske to confirm.

I use the same type of barrel BTW as Noveske does...They do make some really nice barrels though, the only negative being the price is a bit high.

BTW, I plan to convert my 22" 6.5mm PCC to a Adams Arms rifle piston system in the near future.

So if I have a Robinson XCR and wanted a barrel in this caliber, what sort of specs would I need to give the manufacturer to get a barrel?

Well, provided you can find a barrel manufacturer for the XCR, all you would need is the reamer print, cartridge drawing, finish reamer and go & no guages (all of which of course I have) and of course 6.5mm Barrel Blank

I'm in for an 18" mid gas.  Would be cool if you guys could get a set of Lee Factory Crimp dies to offer also (though probably makes sense to send off a case made from the new dies as the basis).  Still planning to get one of the factory crimp dies for my 300BLK also.

Welcome Aboard, we will be in contact w/ Lee for dedicated tapered crimp dies...They may be able to manufacture of the prints alone, but having fireformed brass from the custom dies is the best
way to go.

Lee can make a set for any wildcat with a sample case and they do it for a very reasonable price considering it is a custom request.  So even if they don't have anything offiicially set up you can still get one.

I think once the dies are delivered I will send the needed Items to the Engineering Dept. of Lee Precision for the custom made crimping dies.

While I believe that a dedicated factory crimp die is not needed, I have since the developement of the 6.5mm PCC have considered having a dedicated crimp die made if needed.

I'll be in contact w/ the Engineering Dept. at Lee Precision Corp. in the next few days and weeks.

Accuracy & Functioning were very good/excellent, didn't get a chance to do more Velocity testing
as the skyscreen rods were lost/missing...OH well...

Loads being fired were 120gr. Speer HotCor's...

I'm still here, it has been a crazy month, Worked in Nashville for a week, worked in Michigan for a week, working 12 hours a night the week in-between trips, this week volunteering for tornado relief.

Finally had some time today to test the 144gr Lapua, used H335, velocity a little lower than I had hoped for, 2035 fps was the best out of the 18", 2102 fps out of the 22".

I am going to try several different powders, I think the 1680 may be the ticket out of the 18", it seems to be a denser powder than the 335. As you can see below, powder capacity is killed with the long bullet.

Only thing that can help is using a magazine that has a long COL like a HK 416 Magazine (2.300") or similar Mag. w/ a long COL.

Using faster powders should help w/ the limited case capacities of the very long Lapua Scenars...

Using singles of course will  not have mag length Issues...

You sound super busy and I know you have outstanding requests but look forward to results with an 85grain sierra varminter out of the 18"?  Ive got an 18" and dies on order with you guys and look forward to contributing to the testing and posting before too long.

This is close to what my 18" mid gas 6.5PCC will look like when I get it set up but will have a black barrel, aac mount, and switchblock.  Will yank the current barrel and drop the 6.5PCC in once its converted.

Hello Jason, well your order is processing...turnaround currently for the barrels are 4-6 weeks...dies right now are machined but, the longer than anticipated wait right
now is due to the heat treatment vendor that is running 4-5 weeks behind...so it looks like end of June to Mid July delivery .

Oh well...just have to wait a little longer on the dies.

I did order some more bullets for field testing:

Berger 100gr. BT Target (LD) and Prvi Partizan (European) 120gr. Target BTHP (LD).
They are not long for caliber/weight, so they should work well w/ the 6.5mm PCC round.

I'll post pics when they are delivered.

5/13/2011 12:07:06 PM EDT
[#20]
Below is (L to R) is a pic of the Berger 100gr. BTHP (.370-.377 BC) and Prvi Partizan (European) 120gr. BTHP (Approx. .400-.410 BC, no BC listing for this bullet) 6.5/6.71mm Bullets...They should make great rounds for the 6.5mm PCC.
Notice the lengths are not overly long for caliber/weight...

100gr. Berger BTHP Target, what a great well made bullet bar none.

European made Prvi Partizan 120gr. BTHP Target/Hunting.

Hopefully Paul will get a chance to field test these soon.

Loaded-up some Low Drag 100gr. Berger BTHP's and some European Prvi Partizan 120gr. Low Drag BTHP's for the
6.5mm AR-TCU...Boy those Bergers are some really nice pills, just flawless...

Going to do some testing in the next couple of weeks for functioning, velocity and basic accuracy (It only a has a red dot scope on it for now...). Shooting bench sould be ready in 2 weeks, sand bags are on order...Target stand has been mounted and complete...

Will likely pick-up a good quality Weaver Varmint scope and replace the red dot scope it has now...should do wonders for long range work...

Used H335 powder for both loads...It seems to give the best velocity, accuracy and reasonble pressure in the parent 223 case.
Also used virgin (09/10) LC 5.56mm NATO brass and Win. (WSR) primers.

So the results in velocity, accuracy and function should be nearly Identical to the brother 6.5mm PCC round.

Will be sending some of the above pills for testing to Paul for the 6.5mm PCC.

The Bergers do look good for this application / extra powder capacity.  The Laupa 123s and the Barnes TSX 120s are a good bit longer.

Any update on barrels and dies?  My barrel is scheduled to go to DBMG for conversion but have not sent them a block or switchblock for pinning.

No, not yet. The barrels will likely be ready before the dies. I should here something on the barrels within a week or two. Its the die manufacturer that is waiting
on the heat treatment vendors backlog (4-6 weeks) before they can polish and then deliver the dies. With any luck the barrels should be ready by the end of
June or early July.

Those Bergers look really sweet, should work very well w/ the 6.5 PCC round. Ditto for the Barnes TTSX as well. The P.P. 120's should get very good velociy as well.

More field testing for the parent 6.5mm AR-TCU (the 6.5mm PCC is based on this round) will be posted soon w/ the following projectiles:

85 gr. Sierra's

95. gr. Hornady V-Max.

100 gr. Nosler BT's (LD)

100 gr. Berger (LD) BTHP's

120 gr. Speer SPHC's (LD)

120 gr. Prvi Partizan"s BTHP (Same as the ones used w/ 120gr. Grendel MPT's ?)

123 gr. Sierra Match Kings (VLD)

125 gr. Nosler Pro Hunters (LD)

I have a few Barnes 100 gr. TTSX's that will be tested as well...this should be a great overall round for the 6.5mm PCC.

Most of the testing will be for velocity and correct functioning as well 100 yard (Informal) accuracy (as the HD shooting bench may not be ready yet).

A lot of forum members have asked me about the Hornandy 95 gr. V-Max .

The ballistic modeling shows the following for the V-Max. w/ the 24" Bbl. for the 6.5mm PCC:

Powder H335, Velocity: 2,838 fps., Energy: 1,700 ft/lbs., Pressure: 54,958 psi. (Max @ 55,114 PSI.)

The above load data is for NON Fireformed cases.

Mind providing the same simulated stats for barrel lengths 20, 18, 16, 14.5, 12.5?  Seems the 6.8spcII crowd has settled on Re-7 for 85-95 grain projectiles out of shorter barrels (12.5"?) for Hog hunting.  Just curious how this would compare.

I forgot to mention the actual case capacity using H335 powder is 31.40 grs. w/ new LC brass. max. COL is about 2.295" .

For fire formed loads using the same data w/ the Hornady 95 gr. V-Max as above, it looks like this:

Max. Case Capacity 33.42 grs. (Using H335)
The max. (measured) case capacity I have been using w/ virgin LC brass is 33.72 grs.,but I have reduced it to 33.42 grs.

Max. Combined Overall Length (COL) is : 2.295".   Minimum COL is 2.260" (reduce loads by 10% to start).

Velocity: 2,892 fps.,  Energy: 1,764 ft/lbs.  Pressure: 54,947 psi.

Attempting to answer my own question above.  Using a 6.8 load with 27 grains of x-terminator I get roughly the same estimated velocity for a 95 grain projectile from a 24" (ammoguide velocity estimator).  This is just to give some frame of reference for what 6.5pcc loads might look like from shorter barrels.  The 6.8 could be pushed more than this.

24" 2840fps
20" 2763fps
18" 2716fps
16" 2662fps
14.5" 2614fps
12.5" 2539fps

Forgive me if this was already answered but should the 6.5pcc be theoretically more or less efficient than the 6.8spc?

Those numbers look to be in the ballpark...I'll will do a comparison w/ the ballistic program as well tonight...

The estimated Max.case capacity of the 6.8mm SPC is about 36.1 grs. vs. 33.72 grs (Max.) so if using the same pressure standard of 55,000 PSI the
6.5mm PCC is more efficient per grain of powder than the 6.8mm SPC.

Now, since the 6.5mm PCC uses a 5.56mm NATO Mil-Spec bolt and provided you have a lead/throat of appropriate length you can drive the pressure
maximum to the 5.56mm NATO to 62,000 PSI, though I would be hesitant to do so personally...

OK, w/ the Hornady 95gr.V-Max .264 Cal/6.5mm (6.71mm Euro.) projectile the Ballistic Modeling looks like this:

Listed projectile length is: 1.050"  Actual: 1.015"

Loaded to: 54,709 PSI . (Max. 55,114 PSI)

Lake City (LC) Virgin Brass @ Max. Capacity of : 31.40 grains of H335 Powder (Non-Fireformed Case)

Max. Fireformed Capacity : 33.72 grains (H335). Reduced to : 33.42 grains.

Max. COL : 2.295"   Minimum COL :  2.260" (reduced slightly). Case Fill @ 98.1 %
===================================================================================

24" Bbl.,  Velocity: 2,898 fps.      Energy: 1,772 ft/lbs.,

20" Bbl.,  Velocity:  2,788 fps.     Energy: 1,640 ft/lbs.

18" Bbl.,  Velocity:  2,738 fps.     Energy: 1,581 ft/lbs.

Hello Jason, I will give the die manufacturer a call on Monday for a update. I'm really pissed that it has taken this long to begin with...
as you may already know my original quote was for 16 to 18 weeks back in December of 2010 !

I've tried several times to find-out if there was anything I can do to help thing along/speed things up, but no dice...I  even asked if I could have the dies to
send to a different heat treating vendor (at extra cost to me), still no dice...

Guess I will have to wait some more....

Nedless to say, I will likely never use this die manufacturer again...live and learn I guess.

I was originally attracted to the reputation of quality with this company as well as reasonable pricepoint...Oh well...

Looking at what you did to this carridge, I still wonder why you did not set it up around the Hornady 6.5TCU dies Looks like all you would have to do is back it up a turn or 2. They can be had for $70

While Hornady 6.5mm TCU dies can work if modified properly...however, there are to many differences between the two cartridges and
thus really calls for its own dies. I think most people don't like to do mods to dies when they can purchase dies made to the chamber specs
of the cartridge for a few dollars more.

Yes,basically, didn't want to loose case capacity so the shoulder length was trimmed and shoulder lowered to a softer angle, case body taper was slightly Increased from the base...
Shoulder starts @ 1.445"...Case length @ around 41.XXmm...Dies used were slightly modified 6.5mm TCU, until the new dies are ready...Case necks will be longer once the new dies are made.

Case fireformed capacity is slighly above 33.02 grs. (close to 7.62X39mm case capacity~ 33.7grs.)

Unfireformed cases are around 29.8-30.01grs. case capacity.

Fireformed velocities should be similar/slightly better than the 7.62X39mm of equal bullet weights/Bbl. lengths...Accuracy should be much better than the M43 Russian round.

The shoulder on the 6.5TCU starts at 1.4495

Yes Ron your correct, however, the slightly shorter shoulder length, the difference in shoulder angle and the added body taper (although the taper difference does not effect headspace) was
causing very light primer strikes and many times did not Ignite the the primer w/ the Hornady 6.5 TCU dies and thus had to be recut and a new seating plug made etc.

If you have lathe/milling machine the mods are not that difficult to do...but most people don't.

As you know the original 6.5 TCU cartridge was designed for single shots and bolt guns with COL's in the 2.5XX" to 2.7XX" range etc.

Well thats the beauty of wildcating. You can make it as simple or as complicated as you want.
Oh yea, the light primer strikes sound like an issue with the extractor not holding the round against the boltface.

You are correct Ron, the easiest way is to try to convert a existing wildcat etc.
But in my case it would cost more to do it one at a time (die sets) the old fasion way
from existing TCU dies and it still would not be to exact chamber dimensions etc.

Next weekend will be at a show with my buddies...we need to pick-up some supplies.

The following weekend we will resume testing w/ the 6.5mm PCC, I will test the following:

85gr. Sierra TNT, 100 gr. Hornady SP., 100gr. Nosler BT., 100gr. Berger BTHP., 120gr. Prvi Part. BTHP.,
120gr. Nosler BT., Hornady 120gr. A-Max., 120gr. Speer HCSP,123gr. Sierra MK.,125gr. Nosler Partition,
144gr. Lapua Scenars.

Looks like I will have to trim some more brass, but the power trimmer makes it much easier.

Above is a pic. of a 6.5mm PCC barrel that came out wonderfull after polishing the chamber and M4 feedramps,
It will be going to its new loving home in W. Monroe, LA as soon as the dies finally get here...

Not sure who's getting that one, but I bet he's excited!  ;-)

You would be 100% correct.

Below is a few pics of the Hornady 6.5mm 120gr. A-Max (VLD) pills.

I am going to take the little polymer tips off (less than 1 grain weight) and you
can see the difference in length (bottom pic).

I will be testing it w/ and w/o the polymer tips for my next range trip for the 6.5mm PCC.

Sectional Density: .246 Ballistic Coefficient: .465
