This is just a guess but it would seen the 6 o'clock sling configuration was designed for slinging a rifle over the shoulder when marching in formations. Over time, techniques like tensioning, were developed to add additional function. However, my guess is slings evolved to accommodate the new manual of arms since we don't really march in formations anymore. |
| For both ends? That would make it harder to carry it across the chest. I think having at least one that extends to the side is idea. What I used to do with the USGI sling is put it at the 6 o'clock in the front and put it through the stock hole so it's going around the side. This would let you carry it across the chest. |

It is uncommon because it sucks. The rifle should lay across your chest flat and upright when slung. When tension is applied it should not cause more rotational force than necessary. I actually remove the bottom rivet and swivel from FSBs because they suck. 550 cord is quiet and better if you don't want to or can't use a side mount. |
