I saw some at the range today, but I didn't get a chance to ask the guy about them before he left. They were painted tan, but looked like they had sand or something underneath the paint, so create a rough textured finish. I assume this is to help get a better grip on them? He also had what appeared to be Magpul L plates on them. Has anyone ever done this? If so, what did you use?

Try some skateboard tape or add something to Duracoat or Ceracoat.
