Hey guys, just went to a warrior poet rifle course. When I went to clean my rifle, I noticed the bolt carrier group will not stand up when placed on the bolt face.  Is that always a sign that the gas rings are bad? And if so , is it an emergency to swap out ?  Can more rounds be put through the gun with no issues?

If it works it works, not an emergency.

That test is a decent rule of thumb but doesn’t mean they are bad.

It depends on how overgassed your gun is with your ammo. Gas rings are cheap and take just moments to install - why wouldn’t you just change them?

I don't think that's the right test. iirc the correct test is with the bolt up

When in doubt, refer to the TM.

A picture is worth a thousand words. I think that was what mcantu was saying but this is much clearer.

Well that answers that then.  They are still good to go.   I always tested it by placing it on a table bolt face down.     But obviously its not the proper way.   Thanks guys.

Add on question, what if they were bad?   Say the gas rings were completely wrecked.   Does the rifle fail to fire?  Cycle?  Blow up in face?

The bolt carrier will cycle with progressively less authority. Ultimately, you will experience ejection and feeding problems. Less powerful ammo  (.223) will cause problems before hotter milspec (5.56) ammo.

You can also just look at the rings.

Look at a new bolt and note the gap in the rings.  Once the gap is about half of what it was when new, go ahead and replace the rings.

That's not the proper test and has been debunked.

It's the weight of the bolt itself not the carrier that that the rings have to hold. Stop putting the bolt on a table and saying the rings are bad because the big, heavy carrier is moving. Hold the carrier and see if the bolt moves. If it moves then the rings are worn, if the bolt (again, not the carrier) doesn't move, then the rings are fine. A lot of brand new, tight rings are replaced because of this test giving people the idea that the rings are bad.

Why not ask the Warrior Poet dude? Could you stop to ask him questions during class or after classes?

How many rounds are on the rings?
I'm asking because I am wondering if the gas ring run in the BCG is coarse when it should be smooth.
