I bought a couple 30 round Okay mags from the "bargain bin" at my LGS that came with black followers.

So, should I upgrade the followers, or leave them as is?

I heard the black ones are the worst and can cause bolt over base malfunctions.

If they should be upgraded, which followers will work with the current spring and what do you recommend?

TIA

If they are 30 round mags, Magpul followers are the way to go.

I have older ones from early 90s with black followers they have never malfunctioned.IMO try them out first see how they go and if problems then change them out.

You may never have a problem, but like most things…mags work till they don’t so just when do you want one to fail?  Mitigate the possible issue.

Are they for a collection? If yes leave them alone and worship them.  If No, change them out.  The military moved away from them…you should too.

Magpul Enhanced followers are so inexpensive and easy, why not?

Prior to creating this thread, I read that not all followers will work with all springs, and so, I created this thread hoping more information would come forth and bring some clarity.

I'll look into the Magpulls. Thank you.

The spring in a tan follower USGI mag is different. Its wider than the green/black follower spring and fits the whole body width.

Plastic followers and springs for
30 round USGI aluminum magazines:

black, green and Magpul [foliage green & yellow]
all use the same spring
follower/spring attachment point is offset

tan and blue [EPM]
both use a "wide" spring
follower/spring attachment point is centered

Magpul, tan and blue are self-leveling or "anti-tilt".
