During the 50-60's the British did extensive testing on tracers in order to develop a matching trajectory to the ball round when shot from a machine gun. The top row are Length of Trace tests that are to duplicate ball ammo out to 1000yds (Also are incomplete). They tried everything to different ogive, with and with out tracer capsule, powder both gun and trace mixture, overall length..... Only one tracer was made out of the top row, by Australia, which is in the lower left corner of pic. Second picture of the boxes that went to these tests. Notice that they correspond to a numbered tip color.
The rest on the bottom are different tests and maybe marked on the base of the cartridge with colored lines or "X's". Most of the information that came from these tests was lost during a fire at Kynoch, England, in the 1970's. wolfganggross
