I’ve got an older CMMG free floating handguard. It’s got a this barrel nut. For some reason, when I put the handguard on the nut, it fits perfectly. As soon as I start to tighten it. It shifts up, so the barrel is sitting 1/4 lower on the muzzle end of the handguard. No matter what I try, it goes off center the same way as soon as I start to tighten the bolts. The barrel nut does have a light amount of glue of some sort that doesn’t want to come off. I’m guessing the guy I got it from used loctite in it. I’m working on stripping that off but I don’t think there’s enough on there to do this. Any other ideas? |

Yes Well that would seem to indicate the front part of the handguard (the part that is closest or sits around the barrel nut) either has non straight screw holes, or there is something obstruction between the handguard and barrel nut. As you tighten the handguard screws, its pulling it off center some how. I would install it, put in each handguard screw, w/o clamping it down. Tighten each one just to he point where it starts to touch. See if its on center, then tighten one screw at a time, just a bit, not all they way tight. As you turn each screw more and more, continue to check the barrel center to the handguard. You might have something wrong with the barrel or maybe the threads in your barrel nut are stripped and when you screw in the screw(s) from the handguard, its not tapping in, its just PUSHING and there fore makes the handguard off center. |

I don’t think it’s the but threads. I think I am going to have to break it down and look to be sure though. I’m going to try to soak and scrub that glue off. I’ve tried going slow with both screws, it just starts going off slowly as it gets tighter with either screw. I might run a wire brush in the inside part of the handguard too. |
