I've looked, and ive Googled, it mostly consists of people's opinion.

What distance was used by the military?

I believe it was 50 yards, but since all the posts ive found on google were backed up by opinions, i don't trust them.

Thanks.

25 meter is the army standard for any and all M16 series weapons.

The "L" marked aperture. Most of the images are missing, but this excerpt from the OCT87 version of the Soldier's Manual Of Common Tasks gives the procedure.

http://www.combatsimulations.com/ar15/zero-a1.htm

The "L" marked aperture is used to zero the M16A1 rifle on the 25-meter range.  Once the zeroing is complete, flipping the sight to the unmarked aperture will cause the sights to be zeroed for 250 meters.  Flipping the sight back to the "L" marked aperture will automatically extend the zero to 375 meters without additional adjustments to the front sight post.

This. And the A1 (M16A1) is not a carbine..... I'm confident the OP was asking about a carbine with A1 sights. Yes, 25 meter sighting in.

The Canadian Bull zero target was used through the late 1980s (until adoption of the M16A2) to zero both the M14 (top "X" impact point) and M16A1 rifle and carbine (bottom "X") at 25 yards/Meters to give approximate 250-Meter battlesight zeroes.

You might want to check your downrange 100M and 200M zero if that RDS is on @ 25 cause you are gonna be waaay high with that sight height.  Also we zeroed @ 25 meters but POI was below POA and not to line of sight @ 25

But now for these style targets A2 and M4, the point of aim and point of impact are the same correct?

With a 3"ish sight height you will likely need to be about 1.5" to 1.9" low @ 25 to get in the ballpark @ 100.
