Let me preface this post by stating that I am experienced (non-military AR-15 shooter).  When I got home from the range today, I cleaned my BCM 14.5" SOCOM (Chrome Lined Bore and Chamber) barreled Upper.  It is my favorite rifle and is "balls" accurate at 50/200 yards.  I got my Hoppe's M-16 Bore Snake stuck (copper brush part) in my rifle's barrel (to my estimation) about 3 inches past the chamber.  I made the "knee jerk reaction to pull the bore snake out backwards in reverse with the loop end towards the chamber.  It came back out without too much resistance, but I felt what I though may be barrel scratching.  Now I am worried that I have ruined a super accurate rifle that has just about 850 rounds through it by pulling the bore snake in reverse against the 1:7 grooves.  Has anyone else had this happen, and have I damaged the accuracy of my barrel?  Any information and thoughts are greatly appreciated.

The barrel is much harder then anything the bore snake bristles are made of.....your fine.

A brass brush is not going to ruin a chrome lined barrel, you are fine.

Happened to me when I tried to pull a .22 patch through a .17 barrel with an OTIS Rip-Cord.  It got wedged in the chamber throat and I could neither pull it through nor push it out.  You can't push a rope!  I eventually put the gun in a vise a tugged it free.

I don't know why but I have never had this happen. Been using bore snakes for at least a decade now.

.223, .30-06, 20ga, 9mm. Never had an issue at all. I do remember the .223 one was tight when new though as I think it covers .22lr - 5.56

I say those rope pulls Are Not for rifle barrels... I broke the rope on a different name one I got from a gunshow on a AR 556...... too much contact area.    I use real bore snakes on Every Pistol cal NO problem.  Never again on a rifle.

I only asked about this because I have heard horror stories that the barrel is ruined and has no accuracy anymore!!!

I've been using nothing but boresnakes in my guns for 10 years. It's fine.

A usgi cleaning rod will fuck that barrel up faster than anything.

If he wants to maintain accuracy, sparingly use the boresnake, or get a coated or non-metallic rod.

It's fine as stated.

Bore snakes get barrels ample clean, and have less risk for damage than a cleaning rod on the crown. I used to run bore snakes after range trips and rods every 600-1000. Now I don't even know where my cleaning rod is, nor care. I've lost no accuracy at all.

You can fuck one up with a USGI Cleaning rod though.

I like the Otis cleaning kits with the coated woven steel cable and brass fittings. One was recommended to me when I got my first rifle and I've pretty much been using them since.

Well, to reiterate, there's no way a boresnake is going to damage your CL barrel.

I used to use coated cleaning rods, until Otis came out with their Ripcord, and I switched to that for everything since.

It's more material science than personal observation.

Cleaning wears barrels out faster than shooting outside of a few niche calibers. If you never have an accurate barrel, or never shoot to it's potential, then yea it's unnoticeable, but it still is happening.

I’ve been using a Hoppe’s M-16 Bore Snake for the last 5 years, and love them.  This was just a one time issue, and I used a USGI cleaning rod once when I cleaned one of my AR barrels, and that was the only time as I didn’t have a bore snake.  I’ll stick with the Bore Snake!  Just was worried when I pulled the snake in the reverse direction because my Dad has always taught me run patches and brushes in one direction from chamber to muzzle!

Or even a stainless rod, provided it's sized correctly and you're not trying to hammer through improperly sized patches and stuff.

One piece rods for the win.

It's not an unreasonable thing for some people to do given how infrequently they shoot and their storage conditions.

I use a Dewey .223 carbon fiber rod. Works well for me but I also don't consider my chrome lined BCM a 'precision' rig.

I also have a bore snake I use for pistol length barrels that came with my Evo Scorpion, never given me any issues.

But as mentioned above, I try not to clean my bore too often, many times with a 'light' range trip I'll just clean the BCG.

Yea I really like the Otis Ripcord.  I dont use anything else to clean my ar's.  Just run that through a few times every 1k rounds or so and keep it well lubed.  Never had an issue doing it this way.  I will pull the BCG and clean it every once in a while too, but i think a lot of people "over" maintain their guns

Regular bore snake or the new viper version?

The viper’s are trash.

Trash.

And no you didn’t hurt your barrel. It may be time to get a good cleaning rod and accessories to go with the rod.

I use one of these with the matching accessory kit
Tipton CF rod
