I shot my newest Noveske barreled rifle today. I sighted in with Fiocchi 223 @ 25 yards. I then shot a 20 rnd box of Hornady 62gr soft points. The first shot was the casing with the missing primer. The round didn't even hit paper when my groups with Fiocchi were less than a half inch. It looks like all the Hornady brass is smeared a bit. Is this a sign of over pressure? I ask because I never experienced this with any other ammo including my own 75gr match loads. Here's a couple of pics. Thoughts?

I’ve fired around 1000 rounds of Frontier 5.56 55 gr Match in several PSA and 1 BCM upper and it’s been fine, thankfully. No signs of overpressure.
Lot # SMQ18B842-001 bought from SG Ammo spring of 2018. I really hope Hornady makes it right with everyone with a bad lot. Throwing away money sucks. I won’t be buying anymore. |

I have shot around 300 rounds of Hornady frontier 55gr HP match. No over pressure signs at all and it’s pretty good stuff IMO. Definitely full power 5.56.

Please keep in mind when you say you won't shoot anymore of the Frontier ammo, that all of this ammo is loaded at the Lake City plant by Federal. This is the exact same ammo as the federal with a different head stamp. You can tell by the SMQ prefix on the lot number that it was loaded by Federal at Lake City. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the entire brand, it does seem that they have had over pressure problems with several runs of ammo and hopefully they will quickly sort it out. |

Unless - you actually have data to back that up? All Frontier ammo being discussed says right on the box - "loaded with Hornady bullets". If it were exactly the same ammo as the Federal XM ammo, then you are saying that all Federal XM ammo is loaded with Hornady bullets, which is false. Additionally, brass matters. Do you have data showing they are using the same brass manufacturing, same composition, same capacity, and ONLY changing the headstamp? You need to bring more data to this discussion, if you are going to make claims like that. |

OK, you are right it's not the "Exact Same" I actually though of all of the points you brought up but it was late last night and I was trying to type on my tablet.
It does use Hornady bullets. But they are virtually the same bullet. How much different can a Boat Tailed FMJ be? Maybe a bit different base profile and a thousandth or two jacket thickness? I have absolutely no data to back up my "just a different heastamp" claim either. But by looking at the headstamp with the two dots separating the brand from the caliber designation it looks exactly like the Federal ammunition that has been coming out of the same location. And finally this is totally unfounded, but I have found that by examining details of different brands of ammo I can many times discern which factory made a particular brand of ammo even if it is labeled from someone else. For instance when the Federal "Black Pack" .22 LR came out around Black Friday I instantly recognized the pictured bullet as CCI Mini Mag Ammunition with a Federal headstamp. So there you go, I admit I have no real facts to back up my claims just years of experience and intuition. |

Contact with Hornady
Here is my thread about this ammo. I have since shot some more of it without any issues. Hornady's response will keep me from buying any more Frontier though. |
