Wanted a jeep gun, something that could bounce around the floorboards and still be reliable. Built this with spare parts and added an AA piston kit. Have to admit, this is by far my most favorite AR, its light, accurate and with the piston there is literally no chamber/bolt cleaning. The RD is from Primary Arms and has proven a real winner for the price. Outside is all Magpul MOE furniture with spare Troy sights. The camo is from my first attempt with rattle cans. FWIW, the paint has been holding up great, after 4 years of riding in the jeep. |

Thanks guys! And yea I could see a flat slip ring in the future
I honestly don't feel any difference when hiding the rifle from the 14.5 to the 11.5 barrel.....but it looks better! |

Great work! Mine is with John Thomas getting a "true" IDF barrel assembly. Everything will be correct with the exception of mine having 1:7 rifling. I can't wait to get it back. Viper's pics are making me want to start another IDF build. I absolutely love my beat up looking 13er but I may just build another "pristine" one. Another thing I have been kicking around is having a batch of "clone-correct" 13-ish barrel assemblies made. No one is making them and the conversion work necessary to yield one costs more than a new barrel. I figure a batch of 10-20 would bring the price down for all you IDF fans out there.

FWIW guys, I recently rented the movie Jarhead 2 on Redbox. Imagine my surprise when I saw the Marines using IDF weapons. Yes, an 11.5" A1 carbine with Eyal (SP?) scope for one. Also an M16A1E1ish rifle, again with IDF scope. Not a great flick, but watchable, and the gun porn is pretty surprising, if not accurate.

Tell us about the barrel. Well, as everyone knows the originals were cut down 20's. I wasn't going to go that authentic for a figment of my imagination, so I had Retro Wizard John Thomas chop a 16" with a .625 FSB down to 13", then topped it with a standard A1. John did tweak the gas port a little. |

Back in the day, when there wasn't an internet (hard to even imagine now, even for this guy)..all there really was...was gun shows. Much different then now imo. More retail now. Back then (late 70s early 80s), one was lucky to find even 2-3 small tables that even had ANY AR15 related items. If I found a good part, I bought it. Saw and bought the ONLY Colt FA BCG I'd ever seen in yrs way back then. Still have it, and its running strong. There was absolutely no complete uppers, LPKs, UPKs, stocks, etc etc. Took me months to find enough items to build up my 2nd AR (and first ground up build) in 83 or so. Plus, prices actually WERE measurably cheaper then LGSs. Not so much now.
Only place to really shop otherwise, was Bushmaster. |
