Trying to locate a source for a VA/Slidefire M249 box adapter, and any other available parts.

Circled in yellow - I'm looking for one of these

bump. I wish someone would make these. My FRTsaw would cream itself. My wife however might not approve of the extra ammo costs

How difficult would it be to make a 249 box adapter for this set up?

First off, Holy shit. I'm extremely happy that you'd tag me along with the most respected machinists on this site. I'm humbled but here it goes.

I'm probably the least qualified among those who you tagged but....

I'd need a closer look at what you'd like made. Maybe some other views?

Looks semi-simple but those are the ones that bite you in the ass.

If it's a one-off part, it's gonna be quite a bit more $$ than one might want to pay.

You'll need someone to "copy" the part, making a model or a blueprint.
You'll need someone to figure out how to make it.
You'll need someone to make it.

If you find the right guy, he'll be able to do all 3 tasks and more.

If you can post more info and pics, perhaps next to a scale, I can possibly make it for you. We have come to the slow part of our year so I've got about 2 months of doing my own projects at work. My boss encourages us to do our own projects to keep sharp and learn new stuff.

IIRC, the M249 boxes have a dovetail and a latch.

So it would probably be easy enough to 3d print a light duty saw box holder.  I don't know if there would be enough material to hold up to heavy duty use.

For making a metal one, it would be two dovetail cuts at an angle and a notch for the retention clip.

Correct.

And both files are easily available. Some CAD time, and a 3D printer that can print ABS and boom. I wouldn't trust the 3d printed one, but after it's dimensions are 100%, it's a cheap way to perfect it.

Once perfect, send the file to a CNC mill to do work on a block of 6061.

I’m unfamiliar with the design but at first glance it doesn’t look like a very difficult piece. A plastic printed part would likely fail, there is a fair amount of weight in that box that wants to move with the recoil.

I would give https://www.mkmachining.com/, he does a lot of 3D scanning and printing.

(I have no skin in the game)

Yeah an injection mold or 3D print for the mag well, then probably a simple pressed and pinned part for the dovetail make sense.

Possibly a weldment on old mags to get started on a couple. I do have an M249 nut sack here at the house.   hmmm

The belt fed conversion I have, is anchored in the magwell and extends below the receiver. The adapter fits over the "mag"  and is held on with a through bolt or a Speed Pin depending on the generation.

The Shrike doesn't use the receiver's magwell, which I wish I was able to buy COTS stuff like the adapter you linked. That'd be way simpler.

Getting a M249 weldment piece might be quickest and easiest, but not the cheapest.

Too bad I don't work at my old job, I could have mass produced the item in the picture above.

Is there a reason you'd want the dovetail part to pull pin disconnect from the faux magazine part? Or could they be one piece?

Qty?  A reverse engineered one off is going to be pricey. Just material and anodize will be about 200-250 depending on configuration. (That's 7075. 6061 is less)

And it really hurt my feelings that I was mentioned last. Don't you know how sensitive toolmakers are?

The faux mag part is part of the feed mech, it needs to be able to top load into the magwell what ch is why the m249 box adapter is separate presumably. 'll post some better pics of the adapter later.

As far as who I tagged, basically anyone I knew of that did machining. Way out of my lane, figured I'd ask some experts

I was just joking.

This is not a hard project for someone with experience reverse engineering and making the part. If I had time, I'd be happy to do it, especially if there's enough demand to do a multiple run. We're missing @xd341, I think his name is. But, he's probably too busy to do one, as well.

Whoever does it will need all mating parts long enough to measure them. (the belt container fitting and the part that goes in the mag well). Preferably long enough to build and check fit.

The feedback Weldment is $80.

https://hi-desertdog.com/belt-fed-rifles-machine-guns/belt-fed-spare-parts/m249-receiver-group/m249-weldment-feed-box-retainer.html

Might be cheaper now to buy the weldment and attach it to an adaptor that goes to your magwell insert.  You don't have to worry about critical dimensions.
