I’ve got the piston itch again, been eyeing a LWRC IC MKii, specifically the 16in rifle, but there’s not a lot of feedback about it. I’m sure it’ll be a solid rifle, but nevertheless I’m curious about accuracy of the rifle.

It seems for a premium piston AR, this might be one of the better values. Plus the spiral fluted barrel gets my jimmies going.

Would you get one over say, an HK MR556A4?

My LWRCs are the most accurate rifles I own, save for the Larues and Mk12.

I will second this.  I have a 16” A5 and it’s only at about 600 yds shooting steel that I really notice any kind of accuracy difference between the LWRC and and my mock-12 (larue with a mk12 barrel).  To my understanding the barrels on the MkIIs are the same as on the previous models.

The mkii is….actually fairly comparable to the MR556A4 not considering price.  They both have non-chrome lined CHF barrels, with proprietary barrel extensions, full ambi lowers, 2 position gas block, just to name a few things.

When I was getting into LWRC several years ago, the MR556A4 wasn’t around. If it was, in all honesty I may have chosen HK.  BUT that is purely for the cool factor of HK (my own opinion, clearly not everyone likes HK either).  There would be very little practical utility difference between the two brands in terms of accuracy or reliability.

A few things to consider - maybe important to you, maybe not.  But the A4, for all the proprietary-ness of HK, actually has some more options for customization.  Any 416 hand guard will work on them - Geissele, HK quadrails, etc.  HK sells many different sizes of adjustment screws for the A4 gas block so you can tune to a suppressor that way.  To my knowledge, no one makes an aftermarket rail that fits LWRC upper receivers.  And I’m about 95% certain they don’t sell anything similar to fine tune their 2 position gas block.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my L-dub and it’s the rifle I shoot the most.  I’m not in a rush to sell them and switch to HK.  But if I was starting over into piston guns right now, I may go HK.  Not because there’s a huge difference in terms of accuracy or reliability, but more so for the modularity and aesthetics of having a 416 hand guard.

One final comparison point is parts.  LWRC won’t even sell their barrel nut wrench so swapping barrels is not really something you can do yourself.  The barrel extension isnt standard anyway.  HK has a lifetime warranty on the A4 barrels but it’s also possible to swap them to Nefarious or other 416 barrels yourself if you so desire.

Pros and cons to both.

Lwrc currently lists their barrel nut wrench. I’ve owned 4. 3 of which were included when they were selling overruns of the SPR rail, after moving to the monoforge uppers. Hence the surplus..

https://www.lwrci.com/LWRCI-Barrel-Nut-Wrench-9-Tooth-_p_61.html

The barrel extension is standard. I’ve run their piston barrels in DI, and standard barrels with their piston.  Their midlength gas length varies from standard though.

With standard midlength barrels, I happened upon the appropriate op rod from the M6SL model, and ran a standard DI barrel without issue with a spare M6a3 gas block.

I’ve run a 10.5 carbine gas DI barrel with an LWRC piston assembly  without issue.

The only real pain, and why most avoid the swap, is pinning the gas block again. It’s a beast unless you have an appropriate jig, but no more so than repinning an FSB.

The only system that is crazy proprietary is the Repr.

My bad.  For some reason I thought their barrel extensions were different too.  And I swear I’ve seen people passing around barrel nut wrenches in the LWRC Facebook group like they were a forbidden fruit of some kind.  But that coulda been when they were out of stock or something. I haven’t yet swapped a barrel on my A5.

You’re right on the REPR too.  I have a very OG original REPR, 16” non-fluted barrel and the 4 position gas block (which I will totally trade with a pile of mags for an MR762A4 if anyone is interested).  It’s a super neat rifle but there’s very little “standard” about it.  I emailed LWRC customer service to ask if the current generation of REPR uppers would work on my lower and….for some reason, no.

Really like this analysis. Kinda pushing me towards MR556A4 over the LWRC. I’ve got one shot at this so I want to get the best I can.

I have an older piston LWRC, not the new MkII.... but consider this.... aside from the piston return spring and the piston spring cup, all the "wear" parts on an LWRC are AR15 pattern. Put a lot of rounds on your LWRC and want to preventative-maintenance replace your bolt, cam pin, springs, etc? Put AR15 ones in there. And the proprietary piston spring and cup I mentioned before.... they are like $5 on LWRC's website.... Buy a few spares now and you're set for life.

Want to get a spare part for your HK in 15 years?  I have no first-hand experience but I'm guessing that might be difficult based on my experiences with my other proprietary rifle (Knights SR15)

Please note my LWRC is a 2013 SPR version. I'm assuming the new IC MKII is the same in the regards I mentioned. Perhaps there's a wear part in the gas selector I'm not aware of; the SPR doesn't have a suppressor gas setting selector.
