Only if you need more mags. I sure won't be throwing away, giving away, or in any way replacing any of my cache of Lancer mags and I have them going all they way back to the original L5.

Just wait a little bit, they’ll be out soon enough. It’s not like there isn’t a plethora of mags available now, unless you are one of “those types” that has to be the first kid on the block to get something new.

I remember when Lancer posted how to fix "difficult to seat a full mag on a closed bolt" ( a LONG time ago ) ... and while it did fix that issue, it also caused the mag to be more prone to spew rounds when dropped on its floor plate. The other site, says this has been addressed in the Gen 2. |

I just went to their website and while I didn’t buy any, I could put 30 round opaque black, translucent smoke, opaque FDE, and translucent FDE in the shopping cart. But I’m not paying full retail for them when AR15 Discounts or Gun Mag Warehouse will have them for ~$15 in a month or so.

The previous 3 versions were all one generation, but this is a different one? The changes look less significant than the change from the original feedlip reinforcement to current.

I’m in no hurry to pay retail pricing on these.
Once they hit their normal vendors for cheaper, I’ll grab a few smoke ones. I’m hoping they put out the new ones in some fancy new colors as well. |

I could have sworn I read something about the Gen 2 from Shot coverage but I couldn’t find it again and searching turned up nothing. I was beginning to think I had dreamt them up.  I’ll probably end up getting some eventually but they sorta sound like a “we fixed it for M855A1!” product. Can’t afford that stuff! I have original L5 mags that still run just fine. Middling amount of L5A mags and tons of L5AWM Gen 1 as well. Lancer makes good stuff; I suspect the AWM Gen 2 will be no different even though it needs a different name. RAWM - Really Advanced Warfare Magazine maybe? |

Well... and just an FYI.
Lancer said the reason I can't check out , on their webpage, is because my state has a ban on 30rd mags. My state does NOT have any such ban. I little depressing a major Mag producer doesn't know which states have bans, and which don't. ( just bi_chin' ) EDIT... I asked the Lancer CS to phone me back with an update, concerning their "ban" status... no call back as of 3/24. |

It remains unclear to me if there is any material improvement to this magazine over what they've been selling up to now; or if it's just a profile change to adjust the angle of M855A1 feeding to address erosive steel tip issue. |

How in the hell can anyone make any kind of legitimate guess from that picture as to what it's loaded with? Your eyes are a whole lot better than mine if you really think you can tell from that picture what ammo is stuffed in there.
 Reminds me of an old hunting buddy. A deer could run across the field 300 yards away, just before legal shooting time ended (30 minutes after sunset) and he would say something like, "HOLY CRAP, did you see that buck? That monster had 13 points with 8 inch brow tines," and he would be as as serious as a heart attack. Hell fire, I couldn't even see it was for certain a deer, let alone if it had antlers or the length of the brow tines! |

Click on the main image and it's slightly bigger. Not by much. But take a moment, and you can see the rounds have a bright metallic colored front trip; which so too does M855A1. It's not for sure, but a decent guess that's M855A1 based on the shinyer front tip of the bullet. Or it's just the lighting - who knows; Lancer is being remarkably coy on why this next-gen exists at all. Though the industry trend of late appears to be the main reason folks are releasing new mag versions of old winners, is M855A1. |

Given that comment on Lancers webpage... I would like to think Lancer has "improved" the "feedlip geometry" with the M855A1 rd in mind. That would be a logical progression. As per this... The previous L5AWM wasn't quite up to speed. "Up to 22% reduction in insertion force on a closed bolt" when combined with "exceptional round retention" and "reduced free stack space to maximize round retention" Years ago, Lancer recommended how to reduce insertion force on a closed bolt with a fully 30rd loaded mag... by shortening the follower legs slightly. However, doing so allowed the 30rd stack more free space to move in the mag, and that made it easier for the stack to spit rounds when a fully loaded mag was dropped onto the floor plate. If Lancer has figured out how to prevent / minimize that, I would like to know how they did it. Or at least be able to compare the Gen 2 to the previous model. FWIW... I am not knocking Lancer mags at all, and I own lots of Lancer products.... I am just curious. It will be interesting to see if the feedlips follow this geometry. Grey is the improved over the previous orange.. And is used in the EPM 30rd mag. ( For good or bad )

I will start by saying , I like Lancer L5AWM mags, and own quite a few. The translucent mag body and steel feed lips is a great way to go. My Lancers have all been 100% trouble free, and reliable. Feeding factory 77gr ammo through 50gr with no issues. All mags are virgin in the wrap, as measured. So never used. Samples of 1 each... And YMMV since yours might be slightly different than mine. The Differences , as I noticed on a current Translucent DE L5AWM Gen II , v. a year old ODG Translucent L5AWM Gen I. The springs are the same length, but the Gen II diameter is .0575"... Gen I is .059".... Both Springs are more of a Bronze color. FWIW, various common spring diameters... 11-23 Production Magpul M3 30rd Windowed is .058" as per my calibers... spring is "Black", and FWIW with the Orange round count paint included, measuring .060 1-21 Production 30rd OKAY Surefeed w/ Magpul follower... .058"... spring is "copper" colored 9-12 Production 30rd OKAY / Marked NHMTG w/ Magpul follower.... .058"... spring is "copper" colored The base plate "stop" measured Gen II .0450", ....Gen I .0435" Follower, measured at the front "Triangle" stop Gen II.... .0485", Gen I .... measured at the same point... .041", So yeah there is less free travel in the 30rd stack in the Gen II (? ) ( Question mark because , does the slightly thinner spring "defeat" the follower differences. ) As for easier insertion... not sure how to measure that, but the Gen II does "feel" easier to insert. ( YMMV, since my morning coffee intake has been exceeded by a few cups this morning, Lol ) Better cartridge presentation ? Visually very hard to tell... but I measured from the upper most left hand mag catch slot, to the vertical top of the same side feed lip for lack of a better spot. Gen II... 1.131" Gen I... 1.1345" And also measured from the front most on the feed lip , to the edge of the follower "bump", but still on the follower "flat". Gen II... .0218" Gen I ... .0209" VERY informal Drop test for spewing of rounds... ( the 30rd stack in the mag moves, and briefly allows rounds that aren't under spring pressure. I dropped both the Gen II and the Gen I from about 5ft, on to carpeted floor, ea Gen, 10 times trying to drop them at the same angles... Gen II spewed a round 5 times. Gen I spewed a round 2 times...| What does that mean ? Not a helluva lot, but it is what it is. Weight differences between all types of 30rd mags, so little differences , not even worth noting to me. Weighed on the Wifes kitchen scale Both Lancers... 3.80z / 108grams Magpul M3... 5.0oz / 142grams Okay / Surefeed... 4.2oz / 118grams Okay ....4.1oz / 117grams Some interesting to note differences between all 5... The OKAY Surefeed "releases" a 5.56 round FAR sooner then any other one, because of the feed lip "tapered" profile. The Magpul M3 tends to position a round in a better angle , because of the front angles on the mag. Pics will show what I mean. |

Regarding these being Gen 2: The L5 was the first, and the L5 AWM was an entirely different magazine design. Semantics really, but there was a complete overhaul versus just a couple updates.
At one point they sold both as their own different series. |

I still don't think this looks competitive. I've used my Lancers for training mags in guns that will tolerate them, but at $20/pop, this is more than my go-to mags.

Honestly - I have very little interest so far in spending the premium they want for Gen 2. When Lancers are on sale for $12, buy buy buy! (Though the ETS were on sale for $6, at the same time - and interestingly enough, I run the ETS much more. I use those ETS as cheap beaters.... that seem to never actually fail, ever). |
