I own a couple of the BRM-S Harris bipods myself. Huge fan.

Definitely go with the S series regardless. The swivel function is well worth it.

I guess it would be classified as a mini-Recce since it has a 14.5" barrel.

Well, here's what the Mk8 has ended up on for now.  Pinned 14.5" with DD RIS II FSP rail.

Houris reticle and if it's under 2600 I'd buy it. I love my Mk8, it's hard to justify spending that kind of coin on a 1-8 optic especially for a non-prescoision gun but it does not disappoint, I can't say enough about it. I bought the mk8 to replace a NF 2.5x10 and there is no comparison.

I'm pretty much the other way around.

I very briefly had a Mk8 1.1-8x. Sold it for a NF 2.5-10x32 and VCOG.

The 8x Mk8 is 4.2 ounces heavier than a 10x NF for starters. And similar to the Mk6, the Mk8 has finicky illumination depending on your head position. On top of that, I realize it's just 1.1x, so not much more than a true 1x, but I could really see the difference in that .1x.

To me, it was a jack of all trades, master of none optic. For $600 more than I sold my Mk8 for, I was able to get a brand new NF 2.5-10x32 and brand new VCOG (I got screaming deals on both though mind you).

The NF is a far lighter and superior distance/precision optic for me. And the VCOG is a far superior 1x optic for me - which also still has great versatility with the 6x high end.

I'm actually thinking about selling yet another Mk6 1-6x to fund a second NF 2.5-10x or a third VCOG right now.

I can agree with the majority of your sentiments.  You can definitely tell it's not a true 1x, although it is definitely better than a friend's 1.25-4x VX-R, it's also heavy as fuck.  Glass quality, at least to me, is some of the best I've looked through.  I also love the reticle and the pinch and turn turrets.

Jack of all trades, master of none is a pretty fair assessment.

I'm wanting to get my hands on an S&B Short Dot 1-8x to give it a shot.  I've heard it's a true 1x and the illumination is phenomenal (my CQBSS has the TMR reticle, so no daylight bright illumination).

I appreciate the insight on the Mk8 from both of you guys. I personally like the H27 model a lot but feel it may be just a little too heavy for a lightish AR. As far as the 1-8x shortdot I only got to mess with one of the preproduction models at the shot show, the FDE models co branded with HK were sweet.

I'm excited to do a head to head comparison between the mk6 and elcan, hopefully this weekend.

I made an executive decision today.

I shall rebarrel the 11.5 with a 14.5 ballistic advantage barrel. Going to be joining a new range and want to get all the speed I can to allow me to play on the 300+ range.

Is a 10" rail still kosher or do I need a 11-12"?

A 14.5" barrel calls for at least a 12" handguard, or even better, a 13-13.5" handguard.

My all-time favorite 14.5:

Needs an updated pic as I recently sold that Mark 6, and it now rocks a VCOG.

I think a stripped upper is in order as well. Your 11.5 is pretty damn sweet. Add the cost of a new rail, might as well go full on upper. But tell me about Ballistic Advantage barrels? They look nicely priced.

Yes - I'll rebuild the 11.5 setup again but not right away, the rail and barrel aren't going anywhere.

Joining a new range this month that goes out to 1200 yards - and I want to be able to shoot effectively out to 400-500 and the 14.5 will assist with this better than the 11.5 will. I'm thinking an ALG rail will work nicely on the 14.5.

Now that you got me thinking.... I should just keep my current upper and build a new one on the 14.5 (put the 1-4x on it) Damn you all!

For a mini-recce, where the optic is low to medium magnification, can a non-chrome 4150 barrel give you better accuracy for the money than a stainless?

Stainless is generally associated with higher accuracy, but in my opinion the manufacturer is what makes or breaks accuracy, not the base metal's alloy composition.

I went with nitride to see if it will provide any benefits over CL in regards to accuracy.

curious to see the result, some reviews I've read are promising.....plus it was $124 shipped

Just shopping 14.5s for my build.

Stainless is generally associated with higher accuracy, but in my opinion the manufacturer is what makes or breaks accuracy, not the base metal's alloy composition.

I went with nitride to see if it will provide any benefits over CL in regards to accuracy.

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare,
with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands.

Same, single 3.5 timney. I've had it for eight years and have become so naturalized to it.

Got shipment confirmation on my scope. I picked up the Bushnell 1-4 BDC while it went on sale. Hope I like it okay. Can anyone recommend a cheaper mount for it.
