Sent can to Ecco Machine for Plan B (Q Cherry Bomb) conversion. Q 7" HB barrel with 12" handguard. (New Front end, mo betta)

First time poster here. Here's the build list: Centurion Arms 14.5 SOCOM CHF barrel Centurion Arms BCG, gas tube, gas block, and upper Radian Raptor CH Geissele MK16 BCM complete lower Scalarworks fixed front sight, MBUS PRO rear Rein 3.0 Only 500 rounds through it, but so far 100% reliable Totally happy with it a little heavy at 9lbs 3oz with an empty mag

Speaking from experience with a cut down bolt for a straight pull bolt action, it will work without pressure, but with a sharp acceleration in the wrong-direction can pull the bolt carrier back far enough that the hammer won't land. How sharp of a force depends on how much friction those gas rings have with the carrier. It's also obnoxiously easy to snag the charging handle on something. Again, speaking from experience. If you're just bench shooting, you'll get by. If you're hiking a trail with branches, make sure your bolt is closed all the way before you shoot, if you don't have anything exerting pressure forward on the carrier. This is a cut down straight-pull bolt-action AR upper on a FM Ranch lower. (The lower is intended to be used with proprietary uppers with a higher rail and buffer system above the carrier raceway.) The carrier is a cut down side-charge carrier from Davidson Defense -- one of their cheap house brands. Straight piece of gas tube pinned into the gas key, and you have a rod under the handguard you can throw some springs on. Make sure they rest against a flush surface -- I used modified aluminum sleeves. They are shaped to fit around the barrel nut and ensure the springs have a flush surface to press against. For the springs to push against at the front end of the gas tube section (and thus push the carrier forward), I used a ground re-shaped shaft sleeve with a set screw -- similar to a drill bit collar. I also drilled a hole in the gas tube for the set screw to align with. With a bolt action upper, you don't need anywhere the same amount of force as a buffer spring. The springs I currently am using are an inner and outer spring that fit over each other. The biggest flaw in this straight-pull design (besides the fact that I could probably find a spring set strong enough to load rounds off the top of the magazine), is it requires taking the handguard off to remove the set screw -- or putting an access hole at the right point in the pic rail. But, with it being bolt action, there's minimal need to pull the bolt out, and (relatively) no carbon fouling in it, so this is a minimal downside.  This too is a .300 blk. Rem 870 12ga stock FM Ranch lower w/Hiperfire trigger Wilson Combat .300 blk barrel SD Tactical handguard (modified) Spike's Tactical slick side (no/ FA, deflector, door) lower, modified. High Vis Fiber Optic Glock Sights on High Tower Armory picatinny glock sight bases Woox Wood Rail Cover Davidson Defense bolt carrier, handle (both modified -- that's a spent nickel plated .38 special cartridge pressed into the charging handle to extend it by about .5") Griffin Armament Hammer Comp (for my Rev. 9) The gun, with the .300 blk upper on only weighs 5 lbs 5 oz, give or take. I should get better pictures with it in this config. The problem that will arise is that the carrier can be pulled back by means other than the handle. Close the battery, the slam the butt stock down on the floor, and the force pushing the bolt carrier backwards is 1/2*m*v^2, where m is the mass of your bolt carrier and v is the velocity the gun is moving at when it hits the ground. If that force overcomes the friction of the gas rings and the friction of the chambered round, the carrier will move backwards. I speak from experience. It'll work way you did it, but the design remains prone to specific failure points that can be eliminated or reduced. |
