As much as I like PA's UWL, it is a bit hefty. Got to thinking about how I have to attach a rail to the hand guard, then use the UWL's (integral but removable) mount to attach the UWL to the hand guard. Not only does this add weight, but the height of the rail & UWL mount moves the switch out farther from the hand guard making it more difficult (but not impossible) for my support hand thumb to reach the switch. Solution: Remove both the rail and the UWL's mount and use the threaded holes on the underside of the UWL (originally intended for a QD mount) to bolt the UWL directly to the hand guard. Stopped by Home Depot and picked up a couple of 10-32 1/2" flat head socket cap screws for $1 (1/2" instead of the std 5/16" to account for the thickness of the hand guard and MOE retainer plate). Drilled out a couple of Magpul MOE threaded retainer plates so the threaded portion of the 10-32 flat heads could easily pass through yet still act as a washer to prevent the head of the screws from pulling through the slots in the MOE hand guard. Removed the UWL's mount, passed the flat head screws w/MOE retainer plates) out through the slots from inside the hand guard, used hex wrench to attach/tighten the screws to the bottom of the UWL. Not only did I shave 2.2oz off the total weight (which is now 9.3oz in the 3-battery configuration, 2-battery configuration won't fit), the switch is now close enough to the hand guard to be easily reached by my support hand thumb. Btw, that's an MFT Torch nav light in front of the vfg on the bottom of the hand guard. ETA: I'd have to relieve some material from the hand guard if I wanted the 2-battery UWL configuration (which would shave another 1.6oz). Tomac Only other pic I have, did you want to see something in particular?: |

Just how it was mounted to the Mapul handguard, I like how low profile it is. Appreciate the additional pic and info. |

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
