Sorry I'm late, but here it is from page 14 of this thread:

What does the dot shift relative to?  It will shift relative to the body of the sight (the tube) as you shift your eye position because you are moving your eye relative to the scope body (and the target).  That is normal.  But the dot should not shift relative to the target in the distance.  That is the essence of "parallax free" sights.  In other words, you should see something like this as you move your head around:

If you start with everything lined up as in the center diagram, when you move your head up and to the left you should see what is shown in the upper left diagram.  The dot and the target shift relative to the scope tube, but not relative to each other.  Similarly, if you move your head down and to the right, you should see what is shown in the lower right diagram, etc.

I've never held an actual TacPoint, but all "parallax free" red dot sights display the same behavior.  It is the desirable behavior.  If you aren't moving the rifle, its point of aim/impact doesn't change, so the red dot (which is the point of aim) shouldn't move relative to the target either.  Where it moves relative to anything else (such as the scope tube) as you move your head doesn't matter.

Note that I wrote "parallax free" in quotation marks, because as you pointed out in a later post, most red dots aren't completely parallax free.  They tend to show some shift in the corners at close ranges (e.g. across the room).

FWIW the Eotech appears to have a 3-layer glass "hologram" according to their patent diagrams. A laser diode light is reflected off a folding mirror onto a collimator, to holographic grating and finally projected through the hologram and into your eyes.

Aimpoint's patent only shows a single layer objective lens.

It would be interesting for those with Aimpoints to check for parallax errors inside a room to compare them with the cheap chinese red-dots.

Ok got one “Strike Dot” today, it locks great… and the dot was sharp for 5 min, and small  bangs on the unit, and then it all begun…
The dot change has form to something unknown form and big, so my furs impartation is not great , I will tray it on the range this Sunday.
For now I’m getting ready to send it back.

This just came back to my "Active Topics", and I don't think I have posted an operational update in over a year, so here goes:

Japanese Tacpoint (white box, non-"Blue Ring" version) in a Larue (Gen 1) M68/CCO mount on my "beater" frankencarbine since 4/2005 (last time I posted in this thread):

5 days of tactical carbine classes (40+ hours hard use).
15 days of training/practice shoots (90+ hours hours hard use).
4 batteries (1/3 N type, replaced @ ~35-40 hours each time, if it's needed it or not).
30,000 (+) miles as my "truck gun" optic.
4 coats of paint.
6 hours submerged in denatured alcohol to remove the 4 coats of paint.
25 hours shooting in downpours + some time submerged in puddles (a note on the latter: Never ask MisterPX to hold your rifle ).
~300x removal/remounting (more a test of the LR mount than a test of the TP).
~8k (+/-) rounds down range.

The dot is still "crisp" at low power, plenty bright at high power.
There was fogging on the inside when submerged for extended periods, but the fogging was gone inside of 24 hours.
Battery life is still acceptable (35+ hours of shooting and I replace the batt as a PM item).
Rheostat still has positive clicks and positions (the problem I had with my original Blue-Ring).
Mount retains zero.
Optic retains partial zero:

The dot sits high over front sight for the first shot when initially powering the optic on... to the tune of about an extra 1.5" at 15'.  This offset goes away after the first shot (or if I remember to give it a smack on the back of the scope body).  This anomaly has no horizontal offset. The offset is annoying, but just one more reason why I have a fixed BUIS. I've gotten used to it, and utilize it as a reminder that the weapon has a ~2.5" high offset at near point blank range no matter where I'm zeroed.

<endnotes/FMD goes Gucci>

At the last Defensive Edge Tactical Carbine class I took, I got to shoot an MP5 with one of the new Aimpoint M3s on it (300 yard shots with an 8" barreled 9mm is fun!).  I'm coming up on 3 years of shooting with a Red Dot (in October), and the new Aimpoint has me convinced that an upgrade is worth the money...yes folks, the new Aimpoint is worth the cost, even to a cheapskate TacPoint advocate like me.

My experience (and ego) won't let me say "buy cheap and buy twice", as I've put my humble knock-off optic through a lot, and it still offers and acceptable level of performance at the >$100 I paid for it.  I will say that, for the Love of God and all that's Holy, if you are going to rely on a red-dot for your life: test it, make sure it works, recognize its quirks, and get some trigger time behind a quality unit before depending your life on a piece of electronics.
I reserve the right to be my own first responder.

Ultra Dot Strike Dot

Thanks in advance.

-Tuesday

I bought one about a month ago. I don't know anything about the tacpoints. I read somewhere that Ultra Dot bought the rights for it and changed the name. It's probably bogus. I bought mine for under 100 bucks. I usually stick with the proven brands but I was feeling a little adventurous, and I've wasted money on far more expensive junk before.

Anyway...

I mounted the rifle on a RRA M4 style carbine I had put together a couple of years ago. Turned it on, and proceeded to shoot. At 25 yards It was putting the holes right on top of each other. I got it centered, and moved my target to 100 yards for a zero. after firing a few groups I managed to zero it at 100 in 1 inch groups of 5 shots. It was consistent. I fired probably 200 rounds through it with no shift of point of aim. I then handed the rifle to my highschool buddy (Who has fired guns maybe 3 times in his life. Twice being with me.) He was picking off 2 liter bottles and milkjugs at 75 - 100 yards with single shots. All in all I have to say its a fantastic sight for the price. I feel sorry for those Chinese sweatshop laborers who put it together. The biggest bummer is that most any good 30mm mount for it is going to cost more than the sight. I put a Samson Engineering cantelever mount on it. Works great.

Final summary?

In 200 shots it functioned every bit as well as the Aimpoint Comp 2ML my buddy has on his rifle.

Only time will tell if it screws up... If it does, I'll post.

Hope this helps.

Im currently looking at an aimpoint clone to buy on ebay... which one is better the tacpoint of the aimpoint clone. they both seem like every good optics for the price

I have both a 2 ring tac point as well as an Aimpoint clone from ebay.  So far with very limited use, I prefer the aimpoint clone from ebay.  It looks better made, and looks pretty much just like the original.  I've had no functional problems with the aimpoint clone whereas my tacpoint was having problems when 2 batteries were used and I had to change to a single battery to make it work without cutting out from recoil.

Here's a quick review of the Tasco Propoint TS.

It's basically the same scope as the Burris XTS, and the S.P.O.T., but costs less than either. It's available at Midway USA.

Tasco ProPoint TS at Midway

I just sighted mine in last night, but I haven't had a chance to post a review or pics yet.
200 hours on the lithium battery, shock proof, waterproof, fogproof, with a 1 year warranty.

I had the Burris, but sent it back because the "dot" looked like a cluster of grapes to me.
Ended up gettting an Eotech because everybody here convinced me that it must be my eyes.
Really wanted a dot though, so I bought the Tasco, thinking I could learn to like the grapes.

As soon as I turned it on, I saw a nice round dot.
(I'm guessing my Burris was faulty after all.)

The ring that comes with it is too low for an AR, but I ordered the Burris extra-high ring.
It puts the iron sights in the lower third of the optic.
It zeroed just fine, but I started having problems with my rifle, so I had to cut my shooting short.

The Tasco is (to me) the same scope as the Burris.
(I haven't looked at the S.P.O.T., but it would appear they are all made by the same company.)
It has very firm clicks for the brightness and zero adjustments. Turrets do not feel like they would cross thread easily.
The Midway ad says the Tasco has a 5 moa dot, but it actually looked smaller than the Burris 3 moa dot to me.

It has 11 brightness settings. At #11, I could still make out the dot when pointed at a flourescent overhead light.
At the range on a bright, sunny afternoon, I used setting #8 to sight in.
Very pleased with the brightness.

Every review I've read of the S.P.O.T. and the Burris has talked about how well made they are, compared to how cheesy the Aimpoint clones feel.
I have to say the same about the Tasco. It feels like a quality optic.

So here's the breakdown on those:
Tasco- $119, but you need to buy a mount for an AR
Burris- $189 - 199, no mount
S.P.O.T.- ~$149, includes a mount that will work with an AR

If you can't swing an Eotech, or a Aimpoint, I think these 3 are the best low cost options.

According to page 23 of this thread the Burris has better seals and LED shock isolation than the SPOT, but they're made by the same company and otherwise the same.  I'm assuming that this is the same as the SPOT (not the Burris), with the price difference being mainly in the mount.

Midway's copy is a bit confusing.  It says it includes 1 ring, but the picture shows two.  It also says it inlcudes "mirage hoods" and "extension tubes", whatever they are.  copy-and-paste error?

I guess if you're not going to use the mount that comes with the SPOT, this might be a good alternative.

[Last Edit: mini14jac][Edited] [#13]
I didn't notice the "hoods and tubes" stuff, but I'm guessing they just copied over some text from their other red dots.

It does come with one of the rings pictured.

The Burris is supposed to be "improved" more than the SPOT, but if you got to read any of the SPOT torture tests, that guy dunked it in a puddle, threw it off buildings, and put it through more abuse than you can imagine.
Some of the rifle parts broke, but the sight just kept going.
I can't imagine how the Burris can be any more rugged than the SPOT was, when the SPOT couldn't be made to fail.

Burris appears to use the same foam insert in the box that the SPOT uses, because it has a cutout for the same mount that ships with the SPOT, but it's empty.

Burris may actually pay to get the sight upgraded. Pride Fowler sells a sight that looks exactly the same, but it has 2 night vision settings, and the brightness adjusts automatically. Did they buy the same sight and pay to have their options added?
I don't know.

Deep down, I suspect that the SPOT, Burris, and the Tasco are exactly the same scope, but until somebody has a bandsaw and some cash to blow, I guess we won't know for sure.

I've only mounted mine, and sighted it in with a few rounds.
I'll do some more shooting, and post some pics.
Time will tell how rugged the Tasco is. My equipment doesn't get much abuse, since I don't hump it through the wilderness very often.

Or more likely a regular scope.

All I know is what was reported in this thread from a conversation with the manufacturer at the SHOT show.  I haven't decided myself if the Burris is worth the premium over the SPOT, and I don't particularly like the big white logo on it compared to the SPOT.

Considering the similarities, I'd guess they're all made in the same factory.  But considering the price difference, I'd guess that Burris did pay for extra features that the SPOT and Tasco did not.  (That is, I believe the rep that they're not exactly the same internally.)

got mine from tactical island today

never had a red dot and i was thinking, man this dot is real blurry and huge!

then i realized you had to focuse through the dot at something in the distance lol, the dot is nice and small i think my glasses keep it from being a perfect dot but thats not a big deal, will test it out this weekend :D

on the bushy .22lr upper you get lower 1/3 cowitness out of the box which i think i prefer over absolute due to less obstruction.

It would be interesting for those with Aimpoints to check for parallax errors inside a room to compare them with the cheap chinese red-dots.
linky for aimpoint

This shows two lenses, not a single lens if i'm reading it correctly.  I put my new m3 on a fixed table and looked about 50 yards away out my window.  The dot is dead when kept to the inner 3/4 for the lens, if you get to the outer 1/4 the dot does shift, but its so far out of the center i can't see anyone shooting like that. Hopefully this will help with the comparison.

Hey everyone,
Newbie to the forum. Thanks for all the great info!

I was gonna buy a clone off eBay to try, and found out that there are also clones for the SPOT version. It seems to use the flat CR2032 in a knob on the left (instead of the Aimpoint style battery tube thing). Since it seems the SPOT is the next great thing, and I don't really care to be a poser (with the Aimpoint-style/logoed clone), I got the SPOT looking one.

If you want, search for M3000 Red Dot on eBay. I bought mine from 'chinapetsupply'. I'll keep ya posted on how it turns out.

-------------------------

BTW, anyone try those 4x40 illuminated mildot ACOG clones? I posted it as another thread, but wow, the forum here moves so fast, it just got bumped to the bottom already. Don't mean to hijack or anything, just wondering (maybe could respond in the right thread).

I read a few pages but not near all of them so if a few of these questions have been answered already Im sorry.

Are both the tacpoint and the ultradot strikedot set to be parallax free?  It looks like the aimpoint has a second lens on the front which is the difference to remove the parallax.  Do these knock off copies also come with the dual lenses to eliminate parallax.

First off, Holey shit this thread is still alive!!!!

Now to answer at least part of the question. Looking at the Tacpoint it does have the duel front lens(and yes that is covered someplace in this thread). I can't comment on the ultradot strikedot as I know nothing about it. To the parralax issue. i've never noticed any issue with parallax on the tacpoint to any point that it would make me not want to uses it. I could always hit just fine at 100 yards and 200 yards with it. Well enough to hit steel that was at 12inx12in(may have been 12x18, not my range and I don't remember the exact size. 12in x12in or 12x18.

I'd rather be out shooting right now.

Actually,
They got them accepted by GSA, so it has a National Stock Number.  Military equipment is back ordered, so units are buying these as a substitute for the AimPoints.

Price has doubled in a year.

They got them accepted by GSA, so it has a National Stock Number.  Military equipment is back ordered, so units are buying these as a substitute for the AimPoints.

Price has doubled in a year.

Where is the source for the NSN???

Aimpoints and Eotechs are available for any unit with authorization to purchase.....What shortage are you talking about?

Look at all the vendors on the EE.

I'll have to get back in my office to find the GSA data, your correct AimPoints are available, most of the other stuff we ordered is backordered.

I just assumed AimPoints were also backordered.

Does anyone know if this unit actually clicks into each of it's brightness settings and won't just keep turning around and around?

Thanks

Well I know this is  a tacpoint thread but while searching for those i came across the GP487 acog clone from G&P products. It looks exactly like the real thing Trijicon acog even ordered a cease and desist against them for manufacturing it for import to the states. There reps said it was an exact copy of thier product. Has anyone come across one, hinking.gif NCStar was importing them before the legal action.

photoman, I will second your "holy shit" with an "oh my freaking God!" this thread is still alive!

That is so funny that your Tacpoint still works. I pulled mine out of moth balls yesterday because I needed the mount. I got it to turn on, but it won't stay on. I am going to try to stretch the spring and put an Aimpoint battery in it to see if that will work.

Now, did I read that some of you guys are buying a knock off sight of another knock off sight from some china pet supply company on Ebay???  Now I know where to go to dump my old Tacpoint, canted Accushot and dead Rico flashlight.

Paypal only, please. 3 day warranty starts the day I ship it.
