With more and more  manufactures designing NON-Ar firearms (Fightlite SCR, CMMG Dissent, etc) that take

Ar mags, what are the shortest mags that don't stick out so far? I'm talking 5 or 10 round mags that may

not even fit in an Ar. Is there even such a thing? I have a SCR and a Mossberg MVP which feed from the Ar mags

but it would be nice to have  a few mags which are short 5 rounders so everything fits into a saddle scabbard

or just making easy carry.

Promag makes flush 10 round Mags. I have used them. They are reliable.

Shortening your own isn't that difficult if you are handy.

I posted this a few months ago in GD.

Maybe this subforum would have been a better place for it.

Thermold makes a near flush fit 10 round with the baseplate the only thing sticking out under the magwell - won't work in an HK 90 degree corner magwell.

ProMag makes blued steel 5 & 10 rounders that are flush in a standard AR magwell.

MagnetoSpeed made a plastic 3 round magazine w/ no mag catch - it sat on top of the AR mag catch, but is no longer available.

they pop up from time to time and relatively cheap but remington 7615 mags are flush within an ar magwell. The absolute shortest I can recall is the magnetospeed minimag, they are 3 rounders. But I've been waiting for one of those to pop up for sale for years so probably not the best solution

I had to chop a 6.8 mag for my wife's MVP to make it fit flush.  It's chambered in 6mm Hagar.
It's about half as tall as a flush fit 10 round AR magazine.

Flush fit and sturdy.

Not being a smart ass but that's the first time I've seen anything ProMag recommended. If they are reliable that's great.
I just tried the near flush fit Kel-Tec 10 rounder that came with my PLR-16 in two AR's and it's a no go, supper tight just starting to insert.

Mag that may have been able to be made the shortest was probably the Brownell 5 round mags. The ones I had didn't always feed reliably.

I've never laid eyes on one of these in real life, but I'd be interested to examine one, particularly the follower and spring. Does anybody have one, or a picture of one disassembled?

I like this idea the best. I have a ton of 10, 20, and 30 rd. mags. I'll have to decide whether it would be best to use aluminum or steel  as

I  have both type.

Have one, I'm in the middle of moving right now and have no idea where it's at.  Red plastic follower, looks pretty normal.  Never took it apart to see the spring, as the body is cast plastic without a removable floorplate.  No mag catch indent in the body.  Feeds fine.

Steel might be more forgiving if you want to cold work the floorplate tabs.  The aluminum must be annealed before bending.  If you do not torch heat them, the tabs WILL snap off.

Also, mind where the spot welds are on your donor mags. You will want to keep at least 2 per seam for good rigidity. If you can weld, then no worries.  Worst case scenario, you could JB weld.

Here is a picture from left to right, Brownell’s straight aluminum 20 round mag, Colt marked nine round aluminum 5.56 mag supplied with Match Target H-Bar from late 90’s during the AWB and right is a Brownell’s curved twenty round aluminum magazine.

In this photo left to right, Colt 9 round 5.56 mag, Colt 9 round 5.56 mag, far right 10 round John Masen  Aluminum mag purchased from Brownell’s in late 90’s.

Here is a picture of the plastic mag base plate, L-R, Colt, Colt, John Masen mag.

This photo is of a follower and spring from an ASC 6.5 Grendel five round mag.   The spring is compressed and bound to prohibit the insertion of more than five rounds.  A standard follower and spring is used in the ASC ten round magazines which use the same length body.  I suspect the ASC 5.56 magazine use the same bound spring to limit capacity.   The 6.5 Grendel ASC bodies are manufactured using stainless steel IIRC.

This is a Photo of a 16” 6.5 Grendel AR-15 with a ten round ASC mag in the well.   I feel sure a ten round ASC 5.56 would be the same length and shape as the other calibers like 6.5 G or 6.8 SPC.  The 5.56 and other caliber mags seem to have different in placement of alignment grooves in the side of the mag body  and a different followers depending on the cartridge.

Does anyone have issues with the PMAG10? Just curious, since it hasn't been mentioned. I have one of those and one Okay 10-round mag that I bought for bench resting and zeroing. I like the PMAG a lot, functions great and has only enough protruding from the magwell to get a grip on it. The Okay works great too (appears to be identical to the Colts shown above). Neither are flush fitting but are pretty low profile. Here's how they look in an AR, if it's helpful.

I appreciate it. I was wondering if it used a flat spring or something very different from the usual GI magazine innards.

Zero issues with the 10 round Pmag, I use them in the precision rig as it's easy to load out for the range and I get either a 5 or 10 round string. Keeps the barrel cooler, plug I'm going for accuracy. When I hunted, I used them also for the .300 supers, while in Va. there wasn't a magazine cap hunting, I didn't need to lug extra weight.

I use the 10rd PMAGs and Lancers quite a bit for bench shooting and hunting. They only stick out the mag well a little and are reliable.

What holds it in place? I went to their website but it doesn't even show this item.

Edit: Did a little research on it....looks like it drops in from an open ar upper into the magwell.

Sits above the mag release. Can't find anyone who stocks it and since it's not on the

Magnetospeed website, my guess is they have been discontinued.

ProMag can make a good mag if their feet are held to the fire QC wise. Not sure if ProMag still makes the Barrett .50 mags, but they did the mag body welding and had them melonited for Barrett for quite a few years at the start of the GWOT. Weld shop couldn't keep up with welding mags and welding recievers. So ProMag was contracted. They produced 1000 mags a month for Barrett. QC had a fixture that 100% of the mags had to pass the go-no go fixture to be accepted. Very few mags were returned for credit or replacement.
