Did my first one a few months ago and completed second yesterday.  3.5 mile run and 6 stages of pistol/rifle from 0-300y. Course is blind so you don't know stages until you run up.  Course needed ~ 50 rounds of rifle and pistol and I carried about 2x that to be safe.

I have learned more about my gear setup (and shortcomings) from 2 run and guns than I have in 10 years of flat range competition.

I placed in top 10 out of 100+ so happy with that. We had a deep water crossing (swim, but you could shed your gear first) right before some prone vtac port shooting in sand. That was just mean.  Some stages just had written instructions the RO would hand you which you had to decipher (specific targets in specific order).

Go find one and try it. You're really competing against yourself and shaking out your gear - the learnings are valuable. Plenty of guys walked or slow jogged so don't feel like you have to be a runner to do this.

As a result of these I made multiple small changes to my AR such as sling placement setup, adding lens caps, adding mini rds, changes to my throw lever, etc.  Not to mention chest rig selection

You are in the mecca of run and gun being in Texas.  They have more R&G matches than any other state.  I just got back from Palestine TX this morning after shooting the Old Eighteen Defense Deadcat Ranch R&G and it was fantastic.  7 miles, 7 stages with targets out to about 500.  R&G matches are the most enjoyable form of competitive shooting I've ever been involved in.  Go to the RNG discussion board in Facebook.  There's a Discord channel for R&G as well that does a better job of letting you know the where and when of matches.  OED (Old Eighteen Defense) runs a bunch of R&G matches in TX, so visit their site.  Waco Tactical Fitness is another great match, and their October match registration opens on the 24th.  For the good matches, know that they tend to sell out very quickly--matches like Legion will sell out in 30 or 40 SECONDS once they go live on PractiScore, so you have to be on your game just to get in to the match!

I will echo what the OP stated--it's a great way to test your gear and yourself.

Hell yeah OP - I started PCSL 2 gun matches last year, with 4 NV matches over the winter and the education I got on what worked and what didn’t was immense!.

I’ve want to do a run-n-gun and working towards that.

Can you share what worked and what didn’t for you? I’m interested in details on your chest rig as I think this might be a better option than the gun belt I wear currently.

Jealous you get to go out to 500

Agree 1000% with this. It's the ultimate (and most fun) test of a general purpose rifle and the user of it.

WesTex went out to 650 this year--it was a blast shooting that distance across a canyon!  I took a little bit of video of WestTex, but my GoPro skills are lacking.

Heartbreak was a blast this year as well--like 2" of snow on the ground!

It's such a good way to wring out gear--figure out what works and what doesn't, what you can get by without and what is worth the weight.  For anyone on the fence about a RNG match and are worried about the 'run' portion of the game--just know that most people walk at least some of the match, and some walk the entire thing--you don't have to run.

Completely agree. Its exactly what's needed to figure out those small details - sling setup, light placement/activation, what really snags, what pouch is just a massive pain to actually work with, etc etc.

The physical component is great as well but id encourage anyone to do it even if they want to walk. You'll validate your kit in a way that is simply not possible on a flat range.

I'm by no means an expert and there is more than 1 way to skin a cat.  My strategy is to run fast and try to drop my heart rate and recover a bit while getting the stage brief.  My run was 4th and my shooting was 23rd, so I guess I accomplished my goal  It is a lot harder to shoot when your heart rate is still 160 BPM but that was my plan.

Given above, I try to go very light.  Rifle is 9 lbs, ~ 100 rounds of 9mm and 100 rounds of 556, no water.  I have a few chest rigs but I like the TREX ready rig since it's super light, super low profile, and a bit stretchy.  I found that with my Haley Micro is thicker and I couldn't get as low prone as I wanted.  I carry all the rifle mags + 2 pistol mags on on chest.  3 pistol mags in waistband (mastermind tactics AIWB), + 1 in the pistol hot.  All in, the shooting gear is ~ 20 LBS.

Other stuff I found in doing a few test runs before #1 was using a shorter throw lever so it doesn't dig into your back/chest.  Where I put my sling QDs so the rifle rides better when I run.  Putting wrap around my rear objective lens cap so it doesn't fall off when I run as it rubs against you.  Stuff like that.  Just finding a good way to run distance with the gun slung is unique to your gear/rifle.  I found that I want to have my hands free also, as you need it to navigate certain obstacles - natural or otherwise.

One thing I still don't have sorted out is eye pro.  They get sweaty on my face or in my hand when I run - and the rag I brought got damp and then soaked during the water crossing.  So any tips @razzman1 would be appreciated!

I would recomend switching out of qd swivels. Theyll get grit or ice in them and fail eventually.

I think if more people did run and guns youd see lighter setups across the board. Not ultralights. Just not hogs.

I havnt done one but i have to hoof it into my shooting spots and do quite a few drills from 5-200 yards, running all the way. So i typically treat my weekly trips to shoot as gear/weapon tests. Especially when i have to snowshoe in.

My favorite shoots are after an 8 mile run in armor, a half mile swim, then a half mile hike into my shooting spot with everything in a ruck.

Many matches use Practiscore as the method to sign up, so if you don’t already have an account, sign up—it’s free.

Knowing where to look for the matches is a little more difficult. There is a Facebook page called RnG discussion group which is a good place for information, and there is also a discord channel run by SUDO that has the most up to date information.

Eye pro!  Yes, I do have some advice, as this was an issue for me for my first half dozen matches.

I wear corrective lenses. I sweat like a pig when I run, so if I kept my glasses on, I’d show up at a stage with unuseable glasses. So Initially I just took them off for the run portion (to keep them clean) and then put them on when I arrived at a stage. But I had enough instances where I either missed a sign, a cache item or tripped, and fell over something that I couldn’t see because I didn’t have my glasses on, that I needed to find a better solution. Now I run with contact lenses so that I can see stuff and not bust my ass while I run, and then throw on a set of clear shooting glasses once I get to the stage. I use a running hat that has slots in the sides designed to hold a set of sunglasses, or in my case clear shooting glasses. It works perfectly.  I always carry a small cotton cloth and a few lens cleaning wipes, just in case my lenses get dirty, or I drip sweat or water onto the lens of either my rifle or pistol optic.  When I have a match in the winter time, I typically go without a hat, as the brim of the hat seems to trap hot and moist air coming off of my face and tends to fog the glasses badly. Running without a hat seems to mitigate this.

I have also ditched all QD’s from my sling set up, as I have had multiple failures of even high-quality QD attachments during RnG matches.

What equipment you bring with is a balancing act. You want to be as light as possible, but sometimes a piece of gear can be very handy.  For example, a bipod is useless weight…until it is useful, and then you might be really happy you threw it in your kit. Make each ounce of kit/gear/accessory earn its place.

And I run a belt with H suspender, not a chest rig.  Doesn't hold enough ammo (I did the one formerly in KY).  Even ran one with a 1911 and a Garand

@Nobody69s

Having only done 2 on east coast, max range tends to be 300-400 however targets can be shaded, shot up, obscured, small.

I see mostly LPVOs, some MPVOs, and a few RDS + magnifier or Acogs.  I think out west they stretch out the distances and you see more MPVO with mini rds.  I think it's possible to go Red dot only but I have this fear of being able to shoot 99% of the course but timing out of a stage on 1 target where I need magnification.

Depends a little on the match.  I have an 'east of the Mississippi and a west of the Mississippi gun/optic.'  For anything on the east coast, I use an 11" carbine and a 1-8 or 1-4, since the distances are generally short.  Out west in Texas or OK, I use a 16" carbine with a 2-10.  I rarely dial to 10x, but it's nice to have it if I need it.  having 1x isn't generally required for R&G matches, due to the way they are set up.  A 2-gun, 3-gun or multi-gun match usually has a number of rifle stages where you shoot the rifle in a pistol bay, on paper targets.  Therefore having an optic with good 1x capabilities is very important.  A R&G match however is different.  They are almost always nothing but steel targets (to negate the need for any re-set between shooters).  Because of this, it's rare to have a rifle target less than 75 yards at a R&G match.  And, therefore, you rarely need 1x.  To be honest, a 3-9 hunting optic would work just fine for the majority of matches if that was all you had (but a BDC or MIL reticle would be better).

The 2-10 I run is a PA with a BDC reticle.  You don't usually get to range the targets beforehand, but the BDC is still nice, as you can eye-ball the targets and say 'that looks between 3 and 400 yards...I'll start with the 350 BDC mark and see what happens.'  I think the only time I've used the full 10x is at WesTex where they had targets at 650.

In short, don't let your lack of optics prevent you from shooting a match.  Some folks seem to do fine with nothing but a red dot sight.  I'm not one of those guys, and for me, some magnification is mandatory.  The SBR that I have set up with a Trijicon 1-4 is plenty for a match that doesn't have rifle targets past 300 yards, and is very light weight.  Any decent LPVO 1-4/1-6/1-8 would work perfectly.  I ran a 1-6 Razor for many years, and wouldn't feel under-glassed for practically anything.  Some guys really like an ACOG or one of the PA prism optics.  The poor eye-relief and lack of diopter (on some of them) makes these a no-go for me, but if they work for you, a 3x/4x/5x prism optic would work for most matches, and they are super simple and lightweight.

Regardless of what optic you end up with, work on positional shooting--kneeling, sitting and off-hand, as matches often force you into a position other than 'ideal-prone.'  Also work on weak-side shooting, and knowing what happens to your POI when you have to cant the gun 45 and 90 degrees.  Make sure all your bolts are torqued down properly, as R&G matches tend to highlight any equipment issues like loose mounts.

I have an ACOG RCO/RM06 on my 14.5 and a Credo 2-10/RM06 on my 16" and I was thinking about swapping my 2-10 to the 14.5, ACOG to my M16A4 clone and a higher mag optic on my 16.

The short answer is you’ll see some of everything in that flavor. There’s a ton of good LPVO and MPVO + red dot options these days.

I’ve seen a few top competitors experimenting with 5x prism + red dot but I wouldn’t say it’s common.

I use 2-10 Credo with offset RMR for most day events.

Bring something that is zerod in a properly torqued mount  with elevation and wind holds that you have verified. Make sure your batteries are good. Make sure your sling and mounts aren’t going to dump your rifle. These things matter a lot more than which flavor of glass you pick or 14.5” vs 16”.

These are the two rifles I'm considering using:

The 14.5 is handier and just as accurate as my Toob abomination so I'm considering focusing on the 14.5 but using the 2-10/RMR on it instead.

My recommendation - either works so pick the lighter one (14.5 + ACOG)

My setup - 9.0 lbs (with no mag, no sling)

That's what I'm leaning towards, since I can shoot both fine to 600 yards. I go to a range relatively close, once/month, that has steel out to 600 yards and it's pretty easy with both rifles in a static environment.

ETA: Another question, for those of you not running QD sling mounts, what are you using?

Sign up for a second event and run the other rifle lol.

My sling is on QDs. I want to be able to eject from my rifle if it gets hung up on my gear, or an obstacle or vehicle or whatever.

I’ve also popped another competitor’s QD at a 2-gun match when he took some aggressive spall to the face and was bleeding everywhere. I cleared his rifle while he was still wearing it then took it from him by disconnecting one end of the sling.

ETA: have an ifak on you if you’re doing gun stuff.

Pretty much this.

My main optic is a 1-10 LPVO. Overall I'm pretty happy with this choice.

I shoot TX matches more than any other region (only done two eastern matches). Some of the TX matches go out to 600 yards, and because of this there tends to be this belief that you need a lot of magnification. One of the better TX shooters consistently wins these matches with a 1-6 LPVO. That said, his consistent wins are definitely more a result of his fitness and skill as a shooter than whatever optic he chooses to use. I've never felt like I wanted more than 10x, but I have sometimes felt like I might prefer the eye box of a SFP 1-6 or the FOV and simplicity of a 4x ACOG (I've also never won a match and probably never will so what do I know lol...).

Something I've been doing recently is using local 3 gun matches as sort of a lab to try out different set ups. If I'm going to fly to TX or the east coast for a RnG match, I'm going to bring whatever I feel most comfortable with and am not willing to try out random set ups given the expense and commitment involved. At local matches where I really don't care how well I do/haven't committed a lot of time and expense to traveling, it's fun to try out random set ups and experiment.

I started off using a loop of 550 cord, but found that the edges in the slots of my handguard would chew through the 550 cord pretty quickly.  I have switched to the Blue Force Gear ULoop:  BFG ULoop

For the butt stock, I just use a loop of 550 cord.  On my sling, I sew the ends so they can't unravel (which happened to me before).

Razzman1's post covered it in excellent detail.

Since you don't have fast paper (ie multiple IPSC browns grouped together), your transition times between targets doesn't matter that much.  So, having a really fast and bright 1X is not very important. Even a piggyback dot can engage 'close' steel (ie < 100 yd).

I've done 3 RNGs between TX, OK and KY and I think Farrell in TX is the only one that went out to 650. I shot a Kahles 1-8 then and was able to hit it but only because I've shot the same distance at Hard As Hell 3Gun with it.  I've run a Razor 1-6 at the other events and never felt under scoped or lacking in eyebox/eye relief.  Some will upgrade to 2-10 for that reason.

If you're going to shoot a prism (ie PA or ACOG), make sure you've tested it in various positions and not just prone.  Braced standing and kneeling are relatively common.  They're not common in 3Gun for this reason.

Not even a R&G but a charity match and my buddy’s kydex holster lost screws and shit the bed. Only 18 stations on top of eachother in adjacent sand bays.  He was not happy and I think we rigged him up with zip ties to finish.

Me I’d have to figure out a secure way to carry a difibrilator.  Maybe pre-apply the lead patches?

Cat Crap makes a universal anti-fog paste that comes in small, round plastic snap-lid cans, and gets decent reviews.

You could also apply a synthetic sealant, for car paint, which wouldn't prevent fog, but would allow any drops/beads of water to run off easier, or use a ceramic coating so that the water would sheet off instead of forming beads.

There's this towel named the PMF towel, and it's used by car detailers for drying cars. PMF stands for pure freaking magic due to how well it works. I have several, and they're worth the price. You could cut one into chunks to carry in a pouch.
