Greetings all!

This is bugging the hell out of me.

Among the many tools I had stolen in the burglary a while back was a special roll pin holder made specifically to fit the roll pin that holds the gas tube into the front sight post.

It was a long stainless steel rod, and it was actually slightly smaller than the gas tube roll pin so that you had to tap it with a hammer to get the pin to sit in the tool.  Then it was in and being held, and you could line it up with the hole in the front sight post and tap it in.  That hole was smaller so the pin would be released from the tool as you tapped it in.  Then you’d use a standard roll pin punch once it was firmly in the front sight post.

Does anyone know who the hell makes these?  I’m going nuts trying to find them.  I had thought it was KAK, but I can’t find it on their site.

Thanks!

Never mind, within a minute or two of posting this I remembered that it was Geissele that makes it…

Been using these for years and they work perfect. No need for any other tool to start roll pins

While l do have a couple different sizes of roll pin starter punchs, l think l got them from ADCO a long time ago, I've also used a small needle nose Visegrip pliers. Squeeze gently on either side of the split and it'll tap right in.

Squeeze too hard and you'll collapse the pin.

I use a vice-grip pliers that I have modified the jaws on to press pins.  Punches are so....violent....

Drill a small hole in the thread end of the appropriately sized bolt.

It's cute that you think I'm even capable of that.

Guys, as I mentioned in the second post, I already remembered what the tool was, and the replacement is on the way.

Go get some stainless coiled spring pins.

WAAAAY easier to install or remove, don't rust, and just as strong, if not stronger than roll pins.

Just put a little shrink tubing of the correct size on the front of a roll pin punch . . .

Not really.

Those coil pins are standard duty, which means they are not as strong as tubular slotted spring pins.

Standard Duty Coil Spring Pin vs Tubular Slotted Spring Pin double shear strength:

Came across this, no experience with one but it's inexpensive enough...

Roll pins are not under a load.  Slotted pins suck.  I've never heard of a roll pin shearing.
