Always buy extra mags when I can make a deal while checking pawn shops, so picked 4 up for cheap and when I was got back to the truck I noticed the followers are semi bright metal and not black plastic. From what I can find the early 20rd mags with the 223 baseplates had these but the base plates on these are 223 and 5.56. Anyone knowledgeable on these?

If you are bench shooting they are MUCH nicer then 30 rounders. I use them more then 30's honestly plus I have some that I just keep my .22 M261 mags in on a permanent basis. I still have a couple unopened old 7 mag boxes of Colt mags stashed away. |

Advantages of 20s, lower profile for bench, prone and hunting. Holds one box of ammo. Doesn't snag getting thru swamps/vines, out of vehicles. Fits into cases ie M1950 Airborne weapons case. I still carried them in the gun for those reasons for decades in Iraq and Afghanistan. All reloads are 30 rd mags however. OP, same mag as you have still doing service. Attached File |

The font they used changed over the years, I would estimate (personal guess here) those two mags were from 1966ish. Before that the 3 had a straight top on Colt floorplates; and floorplate color darkened in time so I would put those at 65/66. Colt changed to marking magazines and lower receivers as 5.56 instead of .223 in 1969. The 5.56 floorplate that has COLT AR-15 marking is the earliest of the 5.56 mags. I think.

united industries was a subsidiary of OK industries , OK Industries made most of the mags back then and put who evers floorplate on them that ordered the run , they made all of Colts i believe , the one with the "U" cradling the "I " is the United Industries logo , they would also produce for Colt under the OK umbrella when OK had a large order , perfectly normal to see that logo on a Colt mag , interestingly if you turn the logo sideways its a C and an H for Colt Hartford , probably a fluke occurrence nice pull |

Colt moved after period of years to purchasing from Adventure line manufacturing. Supposedly they were unhappy with the quality of some batches and moved to OKAY, that's owner had previously worked at Universal, to make their magazines. There is a court case online that goes over the history of the magazine fairly well. |
