In some previous threads, I posted about my less than stellar performance with my initial SOLGW precision barrel. The replacement appears to be more in line with what I would expect out of a 400$ barrel. Full review upcoming, but the initial outing has showed promise. ![]() SOLGW 18" SPR, Does it live up to the hype? |
| I remember a while back watching an interview with the owner who spent the whole time arguing that nitride barrels were just as good as traditional chrome lining, better even. He came across as a real d bag and it was clear to me he was just trying to justify his cost cutting measure. I knew then I didn't want to purchase from such a person. Years later they started offering chrome lined and forged barrels, I'm guessing a lot of people called that BS out. |

Alright so from what I'm hearing is that nitrided is superior to chrome in cost and application. Nitride does everything chrome does. The problem is the quality of said nitride. Just like how you can heat treat 4140 to ungodly hardness but most manufacturers just settle for bottom of the barrel 30 hrc and slap a thin sheet of chrome lining. This is awful as said by the late frank desomma. This dude also said if you aint got an inch of chrome line on that thang like HK why chrome line at all. Its no coincendence that Geissele specifically uses 4140 over 4150. TLDR: if manufacturers stop cheaping out on heat treatment and nitriding, chrome lining will go obsolete the very next day. This is just known coatings in the public, there are other propertairy coatings that havent seen the light of day. |

This is just known coatings in the public, there are other propertairy coatings that havent seen the light of day. I don't know about that conclusion. First of all that would add cost to the nitride barrels which would make them less competitive and long term CHF actually brings the cost down as they become cheaper to produce at large scale. I've also personally had problems with nitride barrels rusting. That is not to say that they don't potentially have certain advantages over chrome lined either. It also used to be that the claim that due to not adding a coating made them inherently more accurate, this definitely could be true in certain cases but manufacturing of both traditional button cutting and hammer forging has improved vastly in the last two decades in accounting for the added thickness those coatings add. The application of those coatings also has improved in consistency. There are plenty of applications for which I would be just fine with nitride especially when it comes to training, competition, and hunting due to the price difference. Also I prefer nitride for many parts that have traditionally been merely phosphate - most small parts in ARs for example, even BCGs (though my preference is full chrome coating for anything that will experience adverse conditions). My problem was with how he presented it as almost completely one-sided. My understanding is that they used Rosco for their barrels and those have had many of the problems you mentioned though overall they are very reputable. SOLGW also charges a premium for their product so I would think cost of manufacturing would be less of a consideration for such a model. My most accurate barrel is a chrome lined CHF Centurion barrel, pretty sure they use FN if I am not mistaken, that thing shoots better than any nitride I've tried and I dare say would compete with most stainless though I am not a precision shooter and have avoided those due to barrel life expectancy which is another consideration - if a CHF barrel lasts twice as many rounds before losing accuracy compared to nitride and doesn't necessarily cost twice the price. But then again you generally get what you pay for and there are plenty of well made and accurate nitride barrels though when the accuracy does start to degrade the drop-off will be much steeper. |

I was weirded out when I tried to buy a lower from them a few years ago. I was in San Antonio for work, and randomly dropped in to try to pick up a Rebellious Stripes lower. After 15 minutes or so, I managed to make enough noise that an employee wandered into the store from the back, apparently out of curiosity. The guy seemed high as a kite, staring goggle eyed at me the entire time, and taking several seconds to respond to questions. Apparently, none of the display case full of lowers were for sale. One of the strangest retail experiences I've ever had. |

Was that engraving worth an extra hundo? That is completely subjective, but not to me. I now just buy the lowest price Microbest that I can find as my go-to but I will pay a premium for certain BCGs that have additional coatings/features. Anything AR related you'd like to bring to this AR Discussion? |

I have in numerous other discussions about SOLGW, including barrel accuracy, discussions of guns sold to civilians vs contract guns (that all the confidently-wrong people in this section insisted were different because some influencer told them so), and discussions about handguard features and lockup. At this point it's pearls before swine. I can't think of a single company making a better barrel under $400, and the chrome lined mk1 barrel is one of the most accurate as well. I don't know why you'd buy one of their BCGs. Unless you step to $400+ BCG they are all very similar from a design and materials perspective. |

Frankly I got a great deal on it, and I thought the engraving was awesome. Since that time I've learned a lot about OEMs and suppliers and my perspective has changed which is why I said I now buy cheaper OEM Microbest. Also no, you don't have to pay 400+ to get different features such as adjustability, differences in geometry, enhanced extraction, ability to handle higher pressures etc... Though in fairness I really do love the Geissele which is one of those that combines many features and is indeed very expensive - still wouldn't pay full price for one - but that's me now vs me at a certain time when I didn't know as much about the details of those things, and there's still a lot I don't know, but as I learn more my perspective on value continues to change. |
| I just find the branding kind of dorky. Punisher skull vibes. And at first I thought they were way overhyped for basically a parts assembler. Now that they're getting military sales they feel more legit to me. This is all just my emotional reaction to them as a brand; I've never used one. Im' sure they're fine. |

Pricey, but I’m very happy with mine, and the P3 barrels I have are consistently accurate, including the 16” variant of the OP’s barrel. My first 5 rounds fired through it were touching. My chrome 11.5’s also performed very very well while zeroing with an RDS at 50. Obviously not the best indicator of accuracy, but I zero a fair number of RDS 11.5’s, and the P3 SOLGW barrels have been the tightest, but I’ve only done three. Geissele also produces a very accurate chrome barrel. Still getting the 16” SPR barrel broken in and hope to have some 10 round groups to speak to soon. Btw. You really need to check Brownells for these barrels if you’re in the market. |

And it apparently was taken care of. Not sure where you concocted that number from, but whatever works. |

Pretty hard to argue with those results... and with that 77gr Barnes bullet / Bone Frog ammo ! Sadly the 77gr TMK bullet seems to be a bit fussy at times. Interestingly, I just noticed BHW doesn't sell barrels anymore... and SOLGW is licensed to produce ( by BHW ) to produce them ? @Marksman14.... Thanks for pointing the Brownells price. For $285 SOLGW 18" SPR, is worth the "Gamble" for me, ( as per some here ) And FWIW... I use a Lantac Plan-B Dragon 6mm ARC ( Thread: 5/8-24 ) on my 5/-24 threaded .223 / 5.56 barrels. Currently $86 at Lantacs webpage. https://www.lantac-usa.com/product-page/plan-b-dragon-muzzle-brake-6mm-arc-full-length @SuperJlarge... you have inspired me to give that barrel a try. I have been waiting to see how SOLGW handled your replacement. And I would be super happy with those results. |

His observations mirror mine. I have 3 complete rifles from them, a build using some of their parts, and another rifle on the way. I also have a lot of experience with other high end or hard to get rifles, and lately have been shifting to the SOLGW offerings. You may not need or want one [MK1], you may think they’re over priced, but they made a nice rifle with a handful of unique characteristics that set them apart from other offerings. As always, up to the buyer to determine if those characteristics are worth it. For me, they are! Unfortunately, I’ve posted this before, and been blasted by people who have never seen, held, shot or owned these rifles, and told I am outright wrong and that there’s no way these things can be decent rifles or parts. And that’s also now, apparently, 100% acceptable to the current mods of this forum. We shall see how this one goes. |

It has a measurably lower lifespan under heavy firing schedules, something like 30%. SOLGW even published data on this exact topic once. |

I remember when they came out and were the bro-est of bros, out bro-ing bcm even and the famous trashing of the gas tubes because they weren't in spec. Then, surprise surprise, the bro-est of bros turned out to be more dicks. I got plenty of bcm, but nothing solgw. |

Seems like you could just ignore it instead. IDGAF about SOLGW in general one way or the other so I don't have a dog in the fight as far as their worth as a company. My interest is SuperJlarge's barrel and how its faring with various loads, because that guy can shoot, load, and spin up a rifle like nobody else I know, and I trust him when he says something isn't right and needs further investigation. |

Putting everything else about them to the side including the price can you find anything negative about their parts anywhere on the internet? No you can’t, they “source” quality components for their guns. If they do send something out “ which virtually everyone has” that’s defective they always fix it and make it right. |

That's fair. Some people may be coming here for actual information, not just expressing their own unfounded opinions based on hearsay, so that's why I contribute. Hopefully this new barrel shoots great, and in either case we will get another data point. |

Given two absolutely identical barrels, one nitrided and one chrome lined, for absolute precision nitride wins. For beating on/surviving heat and abusive firing schedules, give me the CL barrel. Rarely are answers absolutes, everything is a tradeoff. In reality, CL barrels are more accurate that the vast majority of people shooting them anyways. The percentage of people who will actually benefit from DL over nitride is...very small. Single digits, easily, but people want it because muh mil spec/sounds cool/want to be an operator/want the very best....etc, etc... Again, leading us to the question: the best at what? As for SOLGW, I still haven't seen anything that has compelled me to buy anything from them or believe that they "make" (often read: spec from another OEM or assemble) anything better than can be found from another manufacturer. YMMV. |

Icon defense is making the rail/receiver set, and their engineers used to work for Mega. They're good designs and well-machined, though I guarantee SOL has an exclusivity contract for the Mk1 rail and receivers. Barrel is Black Hole Weaponry, it kicks ass for accuracy, but seems to have a slight velocity loss compared to standard rifling. That requires more testing to confirm, though. Trigger is probably just a Schmidt. Decent trigger, not worth replacing unless you really need an SSA-E or national match for precision work, or a FRT of some sort, but it's a ~$100 trigger, not a $200 Geissele. As for speccing parts, you can spec it, but getting someone to machine it for you is a different story. Custom jobs are usually $$$, or have a minimum order quantity. |
