Hey, I found a couple of pictures of a guy running these handguards on this article and I was really interested in getting a set for myself, but I can't figure out what the heck they are or who makes them. Does anybody know what these are?
Very sorry if I put this in the wrong subforum, or something--this place is huge. Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me! |

It's a one piece, round, freefloat handuard tube with knurling on the tube exterior.
Several manufacturers have/do make them. ETA: Example HERE |

How does the saying go? What's old is new again? These were popular way back in the 90s, on a lot of the cheap upper assemblies sold in shotgun news etc.
I had one on a long bull barreled upper I used for squirrels. I remember I bought it from JT distributing. |

YHM used to have a locking ring like that but their website shows nothing in their tube style section. They must’ve discontinued them all.

All those images look weirder the longer you look at them.

Well before you buy them, just know that there's a reason it is discontinued. For one it locks on my screwing it on the barrel nut so you may undo it. Also, you can't put any sort of accessories on it at all.
If you like the tubular design that's pretty close to these try the pri handguards. They're a bit heavier and expensive but you get the modularity of putting on accessories with it. https://www.precisionreflex.com/82-forearm-rails |

I think one of the most popular examples of this would be Kyle Lamb with his rifle: https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/New_Build___Sorta_retro__but_not_Retro__Kyle_Lamb_ish_M4A1_Clone/118-621955/ The problem is you got to drill holes. So that means it's permanently there and a bit easier to tear off. There are lots of better options out there and even Kyle Lamb made his own vtac rail that's a Troy Alpha rip off. |

Plain FF tubes like that were common before quad rail prices began to drop. They would thread on to a special barrel nut, and use a tensioning ring to lock them in position. A tube could be had for $65 while a railed hand guard cost $200+. They were easy to source 15 years ago.

Olympic Arms was the first to come out with round free float tubes and "flat top" receivers in the late 80's.
I had one I bought new from Olympic chambered in 6mm PPC and it had one of those tubes on it. It also had a standard A2 receiver that Olympic had machined the fixed handle off of, then screwed a Weaver rail to the top, to create the first Flat Top receivers. They were also the first to have "Max Hard" barrel treatment (Nitride) and fluted barrels around 1991. Tony |
