So I've been bitten by the bug for something that can hit at 1k with enough energy, but out of an ar-15 platform.

I'm guessing Grendel or Valkyrie for caliber, but if you've got something better (better BC, less drop, etc) I'm open to suggestions.  I'll be reloading, so ammo availability isn't a concern as long as I can get brass and projos.

I'd like to stay under $1500 for the upper (no scope).

I've been out of the building game for a minute, so I'm not sure what's good anymore.

Sub MOA is the only other requirement.

Thanks!

Deer sized or smaller (like boar, Barbary sheep, etc).

It'll be a stretch to reach 300 ft lbs @ 1k with most anything that will fit in an AR-15 magazine and shoot flat enough to be practical, at least with a "hunting" bullet.

1000yds is not very ethical, particularly in an AR-15 platform. Having said that, 6 ARC is probably the king of the small frames.

Even at that, the 6.5 Creed will only reach about 500ish ft lbs @ 1k and velocity will drop below the expansion threshold of most "hunting" bullets @ 600ish yards.  Bullet drop is approaching an inch per yard @ 1k, nearly a foot per every 10 yards.  You have to be spot on with your distance to even make contact, much less hit the 8 - 10 inch vital zone of an animal.

If you are serious about taking game @ 1k you really should move into the magnum class of cartridges.

IMO, and as had been said previous, hunter "ethics" do come into play at some point.

Mods, lock this please.

It has been derailed by hunting ethics people, rather than my intention of learning what would be needed for the stated purpose.

Did it ever occur to any of you that "being able to" doesn't equate to "I'd do this?"

It has become tiresome.  Every thread I've stated lately has become a cluster because of derailments.

Beyond frustrated.

It's hard to avoid the ethics issue when speaking of taking game out to 1k.

Read bw the lines. He’s not planning to shoot animals.

If so, he shouldn't have said that was what the requirement was and specified animals. No reason to shoot at an animal at 1k, even with a barret. If you can't get closer than that, you're doing shit wrong.

This is probably the best option for 1000 in a 15 platform that's on the market right now.

I find it very hard to get excited about any long range round that leave a the muzzle at about 2400 fps.

108gr ELDMs will leave an 18" barrel at around 2700 fps.

That’s not realistic for most.  Unless my 18” barrel is extremely slow, I’m getting around 2600 from 108s, 105s and 103s (~900ft ASL). I dunno what your elevation is there in UT, but high elevation plus a hot day could account for that.

Is that a "hunting" bullet

Even if that velocity is reality, it will still fall below a typical expansion threshold @ 600 yards, if it is even capable of expansion.

Ballistics don't lie.  There isn't anything that will fit in an AR-15 magazine that will "be able to" do what was indicated in the OP

It isn't about "ethics", it is about reality.  But ethics do come into play.

I already answered your question.  You need a bigger hammer.

Read the LINES.  Deer and boar are not animals

funny how a lot more people get upset about shooting a 200lb deer than get upset about shooting a 200lb zombie.

if 6 ARC doesnt float yer boat, you are going to want to step up to an AR10 platform.

personally i go about 600 yds in .223 (77gr) up to 800 in 308 and everything else gets the .50 but those arent necessarily the best options.  6 ARC is a good platform for a wide range of ranges.
