Was loading up some M33 ball today from a bag of pulldowns I bought a couple years ago and a strange bullet came out of the bag.

50 cal
2.42 inches oal
Flat base
Lead plug
non magnetic
forward of the cannelure is the same shape as the M33

and the kicker...

995 grains....

What is this thing?

Pic would help, but based SOLELY on description (opinion subject to change based on further details), sounds like M1 High Pressure Test (aka "Proof") projectile.  Check it with a magnet.  Should be no magnetic attraction anywhere on the bullet.

Good catch on your part.  You wouldn't want to launch this one with the same powder charge as you were loading for the M33 Ball.

It's only function in life is to generate 62,000 psi chamber pressure, as opposed to the normal 52-55k max

They shoot that bullet from behind a barricade, then load and fire 5 regular rounds, from behind a barricade.  If the gun doesn't disintegrate, it passes.

Not for regular issue, of course.

No, actually this bullet is slightly longer than the tracers I have on hand.  Lined them up with a metal ruler.   This is factory made, as the bottom is rolled on the lead core rather than poured.

From left to right for both pics..   Unknown, Tracer, Ap, APIT, Incind, M33...

Any proof rounds I've seen are a 1000 grain round nose projectile.

Definitely HPT/Proof.  M1 specifically, MilSpec.

The round nose HPT mentioned is the TCCI HPT, solid brass bullet, with engraving band, painted red, also 1000 gr.

Now by 1000 gr, they mean ~1000 gr. on these.  Most I've seen were actually ~995 gr.  (Just like the MilSpec for M33 lists bullet weight from 647-665 gr.  Gov logic.)

For US production, there are only two sources for .50 HPT rounds, Lake City for US Government needs and TCCI for the commercial industry.

The VHP 2020 #2 issue (Fifty Caliber Shooters' Assn.) will have an article on .50 HPT rounds and Thunderbird Cartridge Company, Inc.  It went off to the printers last night.  Will be in members' hands in late May/early June.

Thanks    Just wonder how it ended up in the m33 chain.
