The Remington 552 Speedmaster and the Marlin 60 are more accurate and reliable out the box than the 10-22.

I fully reject the Model 60 ever being more reliable than a 10/22. The magazine tube, along with C-cliped action, and feed mechanism is inferior to one of the best designed box magazines for rimmed cartridges.

I really like my Remington 597.  Looking for a heavy barrel version now.  Stupid accurate with CCI SV.  Touched up the trigger with some Volquartsen stuff and added a Leupy VX-3 scope.  Might restock with something, but it's not bad as-is.  Much bigger than a 10-22, which always felt like a Cricket to me.

I would have to go with 15-22

First one I had was a beast it was the gen 1 with quad rail should have never got rid of it.

Current one is a gen 2 with mlok rail. I tightened the ejector fit and replaced the extractor with a VQ one. Since then it has ran about 99%

Ruger Charger 8” or 10” model.

A blast to shoot suppressed.  After anyone shoots mine, they say “I need to get me one of those”

I built a 10/22 using all Kidd parts and it is a great shooter. Put a high powered Vortex scope on it also. But I also bought a Tac Sol 10/22 that Rainer Arms had for sale. Price was about the same for both but the Tac Sol seems to be more accurate. Tac Sol has a 2x7 Vortex on it.

Can't speak to the Marlin 60 reliability.  I can speak about the Remington 552 Speedmaster.  Its tube and action will reliably feed .22 short, long and long rifle ammo, even mixed up.  It doesn't care.  I've owned mine for more than forty (yes, 40 years) with 100% reliability.  And, while its not a target platform, I'll put its accuracy up against any out of the box 10/22 with the same ammo and optics.  Occasionally Remington got it right.  They did with the Speedmaster.

Marlin Model 60. 18rd mag tube, amazing accuracy & decent trigger. Easy to clean & take apart. Lies flat on a bench bag or rest.

Best .22 ever designed, IMO. I own 3 of them.

my 15-22 gen 2 had alot of issues when i first bought it. i installed a VQ extractor and a tuned the ejector to sit closer to the bolt. since then i have had two fail to feeds and one fail to fire on the first hit.  For a semi .22 the rifle runs really well. One of the fail to feed was im 99% sure a mag issue. I probably got sloppy loading it and it was tilted extremely far down.

i was running some geco "for bolt action" standard ammo which is lubed and i could tell a distinct difference in sound and recoil. The rest of the mag went just fine.

I have 3 semi .22s.

10/22 is good but ammo picky.

S&W 15-22 is great fun and will eat anything.

Wilson Combat .22 upper on a Foster 1911 frame is great fun but ammo sensative.  It needs hi vel to run dependably.

Not a semi, but my Marlin 39A is like driving a luxury sedan. It also handles all kinds and sizes of .22.

Reject all you want. I speak from experience, I own all 3 plus a couple Nylon 66s and several bolt action 22s.

I picked up a Smith and Wesson m&p 22lr ar..
Changed out the extractor to a Volqsteen ( sp ) and threw a can on it.
Thing runs like a champ, rare to get a jam, and fun to shoot and train quietly.

My son has one of these and even in bone stock configuration, it runs really well.

OP:  put an aftermarket extractor in your 10-22.  Cheap part, installs in seconds.  Scrub the chamber.  Use quality ammo.

10-22 go brrrrrr.

My only other semi auto rimfire rifle is an AR15 CMMG with a stack of mags.  Don't do this if you don't have a mad stack of ammo.

I think the Ruger 10/22 is the best semi-auto .22 currently being made.

The jams can be fixed.  So can the trigger.

All in, unless there's something special that you want, the best is often a 10/22 that you've tuned up and modded to your liking.  The modability of the 10/22 is what has kept most other semi-auto .22 rifles from even being a thing.

Out of several semi auto 22's the most fun (and accurate) is my CMMG  dedicated 22lr. Many many trouble free rounds thru it !

The Thompson/Center TCR-22 is the best 10/22 Ruger never built. It’s better than any stock 10/22 and given the incredible features it comes with stock, you cant beat it. The bolt seems to be coated in NiB or something similar, it’s very slick.

Ive got an old glenfield 60 that doesn’t give up anything either.

I agree the 552 is the top of the pile as far as semi .22’s go.  I do also much prefer 60’s over the 10/22.

Best is subjective, but for "all around" (not specifically just target, hunting, etc) I'm going with this.  I have a 10/22 with 16" fluted Green Mountain barrel with fire-sights.  Love it.  Then I got a 15/22.  Love it more, and that's straight out of the box.  Eats EVERYTHING and is a hoot.  Plus, the mags are tits.

My list

- 10/22
- S&W 15-22
- AR15 in 22lr CMMG in a 4.5"
- CZ455 or whatever series
- Marlin M60

Yup, actually two of them currently for me. Not cheap, but for the 10/22 platform.. as good as it gets.

Classic slip fit with Pike Arms 16" SS taper barrel

Super Grade with 18" 3lb bull barrel

Built this 22lr bolt action because I like the chassis.
And I love iron sight shooting:

This.

Also my POF Rebel is decently accurate after break in and becomes more reliable when adding a suppressor.

"Best" is obviously subjective based on needs, wants, uses, preferences etc. Just looking at all of the responses bares that out.

That said... IMO, no American's gun collection is complete without at least one 10/22. Be it totally stock base model or a full tricked out Kidd or VQ copy or something in between. It may or may not become your favorite but its a must have none the less.

What I love about them is they can be turned into whatever it is you want. Lightweight backpacking/survivor rifle to a full on benchrest target gun or anything in between. Heck you can even convert one into a Gatlin gun! The only limit is your budget and imagination.

Oct 3, 2021.  I earned my Rifleman patch using an very slightly modified 10/22.  VQ trigger, sling, stock pack/comb riser and a $79 Bushnell 3 MOA red dot.  Best score of the day was 232 (only 8 points from Distinguished Rifleman).  If I had been using a better optic, I'm confident that I would have made DR......so confident that I pulled the 1-4 PST from the boy's rifle and swapped it out for a 4-12 Diamondback that he's been wanting.

For practical shooting, the 10/22 is close to perfect IMO.  The areas where it doesn't work for me (trigger and stock) are easy and inexpensive upgrades.

My old Model 60 was pretty dang good , but I passed that on years ago to someone.

Have an old 10/22 that I have torn apart and doing some upgrades to so I can get it back on the range. Working models right now I have two PSA Uppers , 7.5" and a 16" , that have been great.

Smith & Wesson makes a semi-auto MP15 style 22 that is pretty sick.

Has a nice clean look and can hold 25+1 (can probably get larger mags after market too)

My new  $280 tcr22 from bass pro has been great , really accurate out to 50yds ( haven't shot it farther ) & eats all kinds of rounds. I paired it with an MRO & its been great. bought a lot of 15rd mags , don't like the way the 25rd's stick out , 15rd's have been perfect on this plinker. No BHO is a bummer.....

my m&p 15-22 with an MRO is also a great plinker & fun , really accurate & eats everything I feed it but have only taken it out to 25yds , gonna try it at 50yds next time. The BHO mags on the 15-22 are great & now that I have found some @ reasonable'ish prices I picked up a few more & picked up a few shorty 10rds from joebob also for bench shooting.

either one I would say is accurate & they both been reliable , wasn't having lots of issues with stock bolts on either other than an occasional dud but as a just incase , swapped for Volq upgrades to both bolts & haven't had issues other than a dud now & then. when issues aren't present on plinkers it makes shooting them a hoot , all my family enjoys shooting these.
