[ARCHIVED THREAD] - IR Hunter and REAP-IR Thermal Weapon Sights - Product Updates and Reviews (Page 9 of 16)
|
I believe the reports about the amazing image quality of the IR Patrol. But, I wouldn't consider buying one. A good thermal monocular is more than just the image.
The past history of software glitches in the Mark I and Mark II really predict the future for the IR Patrol. There are software glitches that still have not been fixed. Plus, the delivery dates keep slipping. Plus, it is a brand new product. All my years of experience tell me software intensive products are better done by larger companies and, even then, to wait 6 months to a year for the bugs to get worked out on a new product. Especially on a unit needs to be returned to the company for the inevitable firmware updates. Small companies are notorious for releasing products before they are 100% ready because they need income to keep the doors open. It is just the way things are. I am taking a wait and see attitude. Maybe in 2016. |

I wonder how come the gentleman from IRD never answers or give any input about the evident and persisting software issues with both the IRH MKI and MKII units. It's there it is constantly posted about but I have yet to see him address what is being done about these issues on this forum. Are we to expect the Patrol is going to be plagued with software issues as well? Dude, seriously. If you have concerns/questions. Pick up the phone and call them. |
| I am on the list for the Patrol. I can make this iPhone 6 freeze up if I try to, and my wife paid about $900 for just a cell phone. That's 1/6th the price of a new Mark 2. I have no regrets about buying the Mark 2 back in November. I am glad I didn't wait for blah blah blah. There is a lot of dead shit laying around Burke county because of mine. |

This^. I've laid 21 down in 2 hunts with the mk2. I have a 250 headed my way next week. |

From IR Defense Corporation: One of our customers sent me a link to this forum, and suggested we should reply to some of the comments posted. So I wanted to respond to some of the comments made by the members. First, I want to thank everyone who has purchased an IR Hunter weapons sight. We tremendously value your business and are working to produce the highest quality product we are capable of providing.
I have seen a number of comments questioning the reliability of the software/firmware that provides the functionality to our product. As stated by others, please consider that all software has issues; weather it is a laptop, a control board for a C&C machine, or a thermal weapon sight, there will always be glitches and a need for bug fixes. It is inherent to product evolution and improvement. When a display board manufacture changes a diode, or a line of code it often requires a change in our code. When a sensor manufacturer makes a modification to their product it can also require a revision in our code. We typically only find out the problem exists when it is reported back by a customer. These changes occur all the time as every component manufacture seeks to continually improve their products. These component modifications have a ripple effect to the end product. That is part of the reason there is a need for constant firmware revisions. We also seek to make our software more efficient with software/firmware updates. (This reply has been broken into multiple posts due to size limit for new members) |
| The IR Hunter has one of the most innovative user interfaces in any thermal weapons sight (TWS) made. A turret knob offers significant benefits over push buttons. However when a user spins the turrets like the wheel of fortune it tends to confuse our firmware. This has been a cause of a number of lock ups. Our suggestion is to slow down your clicks so the firmware will catch up. The second biggest cause of issues we have seen has been caused by lower priced batteries. The BAE core like a consistent voltage, when the batteries are “knock-off” brand or running low, the firmware will hiccup. This is true for most computers. Prior to working in the defense industry I was in the IT world and worked as a network engineer. Brown outs were a constant problem; low voltage often caused network boards to lose connection, and caused blue screens. Surge suppressors and battery systems fixed a lot of random bugs that plagued the networks I supported. The IR Hunter is no different. We recommend only Duracell or Energizer batteries. It does add $5.00 to the cost of a hunt, but considering all the other costs of hunting it is not that much to spend, all things considered. I personally pop a fresh set of batteries when I take out my scope. I experience great results by doing this. When I experience a firmware hang up, 90% of the time it has been caused by a low voltage issue. |
|
Also the BAE core performs best once it is warmed up. Additionally, battery drain is significant during the startup process then power drain fall way off. We recommend that you “do not” turn your scope on and off repeatedly during a hunt. Turn it on, and then leave it on. Once the core is warm, and all the firmware code has fully executed its boot sequence the system requires far less re-calibration. Recalibrate a few times during the first 10 minutes, then I personally recalibrate once I begin to track prey, it is very fast to do: (from menu 1) left turret, 2 clicks; cover lens with your hand, turn the top turret, wait 2 seconds, you are ready to track and shoot. It really takes only 5 seconds and you will have the best image possible. We are just introducing a battery extender this week that will extend the battery life to 7.5 hours.
Our scope is not perfect, but it is really, really good. By comparison we believe the best available at its price point. Prior to the IR Hunter MKII, all 640 resolution scopes were 8K and more. IRD changed the market with a $5495.00 price point. We recognize that any TWS is a significant investment and believe we do offer the best overall performance especially when cost is considered. |
|
Lastly, I was at the NRA show this past weekend and I had my hands on one of the first production IR Patrols. It worked flawlessly over the three days. It never hiccupped once. The firmware is tight! The image is “stupid” good. I paired it up with an ACOG 3x for demo and it had a shock and awe effect with anyone who saw it. As a hand held unit it is unmatched. Once consumers see it they will be singing its praise. The joystick control is awesome. I still prefer the IRH for a weapon, you just can’t beat the 35mm lens, and I shoot a .308. I plan to test it out tonight head mounted. I am excited to see how it performs at 60 frames per second. I also saw the new Trijicon AccuPower 1x4x24; it paired up with both the IRH and IRP magnificently. The quality of image was near GEN 3 image intensified. I have been in the night vision industry for more than 15 years; I have used just about every night vision device ever made. This new IRP is the best product I have ever seen, personal bias aside.
We “do not” monitor the forums daily. Honestly we are working around the clock to improve our product, develop cool new technology and increase our production to meet the growing demand. The forums are a great venue to share ideas, talk crap, and have fun. But when it comes to customer satisfaction we ask you to call or email us. We strive to provide the best customer experience possible. If any customer has an issue; WE WILL FIX IT! I make myself available to customers as my first priority. My direct line is 412-593-2004, my email is [email protected] I welcome any question. If I can’t take your call please leave me a message or email me. I do my best to respond to all requests within 24 hours. Our corporate office also has staff available to assist you. Chris is awesome and is a wealth of knowledge. We sincerely appreciate your consideration. Respectfully, David Rhomberg VP Sales and Marketing IR Defense Corporation |

David,
Thanks for joining in and contributing to the discussion regarding IR products. Guys, I was scratching my head regarding some of the features of both the Patrol and the MKIi and called David maybe a month ago. He was a pleasure to speak with and very, very helpful. He took the time to walk me through some info I wasn't finding on the IR website and to discuss the ramifications of the specs I was looking for (which were there on the site, in some of the downloads I didn't take notice of.) David is a very nice guy and took a fair bit of time to help me. I am sure he would be more than helpful addressing any issue or concern you have. JPK |

For the record seriously my name is not Dude.![]() This started by you asking why IRD was not providing more information or updates here on what you perceive to be a problem. When I suggested you call them, you said you wouldn't believe anything they said anyway. That explains why you keep typing here instead of calling to get your questions answered. You aren't looking for information, you're making a statement. In the way of info not directly from them, all I can offer at this point is that I put my MKII 35mm through it's first full night of use last night, no issues to report. I've only had it for about 2 weeks. During that time, the only glitch I've noticed is the left menu disappearing once or twice. That menu isn't needed at all, so I don't have a problem with this. Edit to add - the image is spectacular! It stomps my FLIR HS-307 which is still a very good unit. With any tech product, software, or a car for that matter, buying in as an early adopter at version 1.0 usually means expecting some bugs to be ironed out at a later date. The thermal world is moving very fast these days. It isn't like it used to be where products were in development for years, then stayed the current model/technology for 5 yrs, and it's certainly nothing like the firearms world or day optics. I think it's only fair to give the manufacturer, any manufacturer, the opportunity to address concerns and rectify problems before calling them out in public forum. |

Basically, that's everything Dave said to me. Do I feel like I spent this amount of money and got a quirky product. Not one bit. Mine is fairly new. Firmware 1.19. don't know if that means anything. Not sure how to check, but if it is the number that pops up in the upper left after startup, mine is firmware ver 1.37. (mk2 35mm) |

(mk2 35mm) yes, that is the firmware version that pops up. ..and I believe menus disappearing is a feature (unless it's only on one side). I'll have to go back and look at menu 8 to see what the delay is set to on mine. |

I've had a MKII 35mm for close to 4 months. The image is crazy good, I have shot and continue to shoot a pile of dogs with it. I used to have a RS64-35, but wanted more magnification and for the price point & performance the IRH MK2 35mm cannot be matched.
I did have a RS64-35mm, and still have a LS64 and another LSXR on the way. Right now this has been a lethal combo and have never missed detecting a critter in the field. I have not noticed many glitches other than when the voltage gets low or spinning the turrets too fast. The scope is a keeper, I really can't knock the performance of the MK2. The only thing I'd add is a MOA reticle for holdover. ID past the point blank range of the rifle is no problem, just need to be able to hold over with precision. |

That is definitely a good thing. I asked about firmware revisions. After I got mine. Since Vic said he would pay to have mine shipped to them. I called IR defense and asked what sort of revisions per firmware were made. It is more of what was described in Dave's write up above. Anytime there's a hardware change, Code needs to be changed. Yours, mine, should come with firmware relative to the hardware we have at the time of manufacture. Now, there can be other updates and I would want an upgrade if there was an added feature. But from what I was told, there hasn't been an added feature yet. So, I'll wait. I'm not having issues...So I guess until I do, I'll leave it at the current firmware. all this talking about the IR hunter is making me want to go out to the lease again. Not sure I can get leave after I just went. dang it. |

I am amazed at the thought process that would accept these types of problems when they spend $5000 to $6000 of their hard earned money. I have to agree with this. I would have a hard time accepting the freezes, long boot ups in cold weather, and navigating through a menu to do a manual NUC or change the magnification. There appears to be people having lots of success with them despite these issues, so they're obviously still able to do the job they were intended for. It is, however, nice to see that IRD seems to be standing behind the product and offering the possibility of continuous improvements. |

It is, however, nice to see that IRD seems to be standing behind the product and offering the possibility of continuous improvements. Because there really aren't any other options. The Thermal weapon sight market has been in a tizzy ever since ATN dropped prices by half with the ThORs a few years ago. The ThORs had firmware issues when they first came out too. Its a tough choice for the guys making these things, if they wait till the product is perfect, they will be too late to the market. Not to mention that they need cash at some point to continue development. There is also this: We keep buying them, because even with the bugs included, they are worth the $. |
| If the Mark 2 is plaugued with software issues, lengthy manual NUC, screen freezes, etc. I wonder why there are not any being dumped in the EE. How many does TNVC and UNV have on backorder ? Looks like most of the members posting about problems don't even own a Mark 2. So why even post in this review thread ? |

Looks like most of the members posting about problems don't even own a Mark 2. So why even post in this review thread ? The one I rented from UNV (IR Hunter MkII) did have some bugs BUT it turns out most of them were newb user induced (not monitoring battery voltage until too low, moving turrets too fast....still can't explain the freezing elevation display) but it worked really well for our purposes, and did so in horrific thermal weather (pouring rain, heat, 100% humidity). The power on was prompt (again, warm weather) and the manual NUC took about 2 seconds. It didn't need recalibration often and had what I view as reasonable battery life. I have found nothing that beats it at its price point for use as a targeting scope. The sight picture it generates is spectacular. As the IR Patrol uses the same sensor/display, I'm probably going to be pulling the trigger on that (pending some photos from IRD in clip on mode). I wouldn't hesitate to spend money on a 35mm MKII if I was in the market for a standalone scope. My FLIR LS64 worked great in its role as a handheld, but it had bugs too. If I pressed buttons too fast the display would lag and would sometimes not shift. Once you learn the device and work within its limitations, they are amazing technology aids. I now can't imagine varmint hunting without them. My complaint isn't about buggy technology. It's about the rate of advance of thermal technology for the consumer market. 2 years ago my LS64 was top notch. It has already been replaced and sells for 25% less than list from when it was new. Thor took the market price down by 25% when they introduced their new scopes a couple of years back. FLIR followed up the with RS line last year. IRD has beaten them both at a lower price point this year. What's next year...?
I wish the IRD products were user firmware upgradeable. I wish they had an InstAlert type feature. I wish they had multiple saved reticle settings for moving between rifles. I also wish the FLIR LS/RS line had a display as nice as the IRD picture. But I'm not willing to pay $1K more for any of those items. At their price point they rock. Whatever the next "great thing" is will have to have a display and features better than the IRD or a price point that is substantially lower. Oh, my other option is a $12K plus LWTS. For that price I can buy a MKII and a Patrol M300W. And you make a great point about the EE. There isn't a flood of current generation stuff on the market from _any_ manufacturer. What we have available to us now is amazing compared to what was available just 5 years ago. |

Looks like most of the members posting about problems don't even own a Mark 2. So why even post in this review thread ? I know that I ordered mine and it showed up in a matter of a few weeks. Overall I like unit quite a bit... it does have a very good image and is highly portable. The things that stand out: - menu ghosting - lack of a comprehensive technical manual (really more important to an IT guy & EE like myself) - lack of clear indication that the download cable is useless because there no compatible software for the MK2 - firmware update process that requires returning the unit (this is a mixed bag, if it fails, it's better to have it at IR Defense... And they could be attempting to limit access to their code to prevent proprietary information leaving their control... Especially if they have not complied it in certain manners...) - didn't come with a lens cap - doesn't work excessive well during the day (no manual to tell you not to use it in the day, so who knows if that's an issue?) - website does not make it clear that "These are actual images, not a simulation," implying color on the MK2. This is further complicated & confusing due to the fact that almost every vendors PDF on the MK2 indicates "optional color" available. Now, let's compare it to other units I've owned or gotten to play with: - W1000-9 is 3.7lbs at least, that's 1.5lbs heavier... And while it can actually see through trees into the sky beyond, it's also got a huge 100mm objective lens. The output quality is certainly not better... Cannot be used as a clip on sight, but does get slight better battery performance when using 6 - 9v batteries to power it! ...and let's not pretend that the big battery you can get for it still keeps the unit at 3.7lbs. - AN/PAS-29 weighs nothing (1lb). Allows you to create and thermal overlay (super cool), is not weather proof due to the open air gap between the projector and the objective on the companion I2 device. Costs ~$8000.00... And that may well be without any of the accessories... Oh, and if you think the MK2 chews batteries... You ain't seen nothing! - T-70 / T-75 - work well, and are nice units... Cost about two-three times as much, and don't provide two-times as much value. (Probably more mature software, due to mil spec testing / validation requirements...) works as a clip on as well. - FLIR RS32 (35mm) - slightly heavier, internal battery (proprietary), no where as nice an image (but it's good, proving software can make a huge difference), has a color output, which can and IS useful during certain situations... For example, when trying to contrast during the day. No hope of being a clipon sight. About $1500 cheaper... Until you got to the next model up... Here is what I think is clearly the case: IR Defense came up with a really neat product, the MK2. They fielded it as quickly as possible so to get into the market, create a paradigm shift in the market, and to get their name firmly out there before the big boys came into the commercial space. That lead them to having a product that would require updates and a need to mature. UNV, TNVC, and a few others (possibly) have been making sure to work with IR Defense to provide feedback and help them establish a 5/5 product. They are very close to getting there, but have done a poor job posting stuff on the Internet... Most likely to control the message of their products as to prevent flaming and the eternal memory of outdated information that search engines love to dig up 5 years after an issue has been resolved. The one thing they seem good about is taking phone calls and actually talking to you! Also. A complete willingness to correct issues with their products (ahem, I want a 640x480 mil spec color display, and color palettes for my aging eyes, hint, hint...)... And they listen to their vendors... Like any other product it's a matter of weighing the options... I was more inclined to purchase a D750 and an IR Hunter MK2, as opposed a single T-70. ...and my vendor told me just to get the MK2 and save my money. It was a good purchase, even with the current quirks. Oh, and when the battery extender finally arrives, that'll largely solve the issues with poorer CR123As. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I imagine a lot of the big boys, F*IR, A*N, have been watching your company with nervous frowns recently. Well done! Now get met that rechargeable battery option ready. |

It is the best tripod I have ever used for prone, sitting, and kneeling. Thanks! Looks like a solid set up. Is it pretty easy to manipulate? Swinging left to right up and down? |

Right angle IR Hunter/IR Patrol MDVR video cables are now in stock. On the MK II the the metal right angle housing sits between the LaRue mount and the right turret knob. For the IR Patrol units the right angle will point directly towards the white dot which is oriented towards the eyepiece. |

Do you think they are going to be completely forthright about any possible issues with the Patrol.....naive much? Scott from IRD here has never warned buyers about the software issues prevalent in the MKI and MKII units or said what is being or is going to be done about them. VIC at one time had some vague input on it from IRD but that was it. It's a public forum where topics like this are discussed therefore discussion, experiences, opinions...etc ensue. For the record seriously my name is not Dude.
