Of the old Dan’s kits that I purchased almost 20 years ago. It’s a 21 inch standard Embell made in Brazil. Supposedly they were used by the Chilean army and “carried a lot shot a little”. I had a built by my local gunsmith and it actually shoots quite well. I just don’t use it because it just feels massive compared to my AR tens. I want to cut it to 16 to 18 inches and put a red dot on top of it. Mind when they talk about cutting Barrel. I totally understand. Two questions 1. How are the DSA 16 inch lined barrels performing? I’m 2. This is a 21” Imbel chrome lined chamber and bore. If I were to have my local SMITH cut it down, is it difficult to get a good crown on a chrome line barrel.?? My Smith used to assemble Fal‘s for one of the companies 20 to 25 years ago. He’s got a lot of hands-on experience. I haven’t even asked him about cutting the barrel down yet. Is there anything particularly difficult about cutting it down without the chrome lining chipping? |

I wouldn't cut it. If you want a 16, I'd just buy a 16" upper. If you like it more, then you can sell off the 21 upper (especially if it's an Imbel rec) and profit. |

Aaaw, shit, forgot the locking block is in the lower. Still don't cut it it. Easier to cut, than to add. Maybe you want to borrow a 16 first. I have a 16 Stg58, and will build a 21 Argy. |

More than one Imbel or Argie barrel cut down have run in to this. +1 I would not cut it +1 I wouldn’t own anything less than 18” in 7.62, too much fire and blast. You do you of course but short FALs and M14s aren’t my thing. That said I have a 18” criterion barrel on one M14 and it’s still not a light gun. I carry it in foul weather in deer season when I don’t want to deal with rain or snow filled scope lenses. The model 7 carbine (scoped) carries lighter on a long trek. |

Back in the day I was on FALFiles every day and built a half-dozen FAL's - two of them with 17-3/8" - 18" barrels. I steered clear of the 16" barrels because so many people seemed to have problems getting them to run right. Even with the FAL's adjustable gas system it seemed to be a concern for many. In fact, even FN didn't issue FAL's with barrels shorter than about 17-3/8". Add this to the blast and fireball and I find it difficult to recommend going much shorter than 17" - unless you get a DSA short gas system barrel. The DSA short gas system gives you a bit more time between the bullet passing the gas port and exiting the muzzle. YMMV. |

One interesting gun I saw had a factory 436mm barrel rather than 458mm and was fixed butt, from the 1980s era imports. Never had heard of or seen such a variant being imported. |

I cut mine down….BUT it wasn’t chrome lined and evidently had been ban era neutered. The threads had been cut off the barrel then later fitted with a pinned on flash hider that was an abomination that slipped over the end of the barrel .  I cut it to 17 1/8’ (I think) and threaded it with proper 9/16 LH threads. It’s been great since then and I do think 17” is a sweet spot for them.To reiterate what’s been said already, don’t cut it. It’s gotta come off to be cut down properly so you might as well sell it and get the barrel you want. |

One of my biggest regrets was having an STG barrel chopped (back when the kits were under $200). Swapping an FAL barrel is relatively easy, and probably cheaper. Properly cutting it down requires it to be dismounted anyhow. |
