Greetings, I help run a leadership school; in short its like ranger school but for everyone. One of the things we'd like to incorporate into our field training exercise simulations is indirect fire. I'm only looking for a surrogate they can go through all the correct procedures of setting it in do dropping fake rounds. I'm wanting to attach some technology to it that would basically send where its pointing to to ATAK so we can arbitrate the effect on the battlespace within our simulations. Some searching led me here as I was told someone on here has gone through the trouble of scanning or modeling an M224 and all its parts and 3d printing parts for various fit checks or something. Do such things exist? |

Yeah, that's me. I 3D scanned my original M224 and all the individual components. That was to aid in the design and testing of one-for-one parts, so it's a working reference more than anything else. For a surrogate you don't need that level of detail anyway. This model is close enough if it just has to look and lay like the real thing: https://sketchfab.com/models/81c235e4b4f44a57ac2c5a8e616ce470 Not ready to announce anything yet, but it's coming. Plan is to produce the M224 first, then the M224A1 if people can stomach what Inconel tubes and cups cost (material is 5x). Right now I'm producing the handles, then moving on to the cups and internals. I have raw material on hand for five production units and a couple of beta testing units. I've collected a few M170 bipods along the way, just secured an M170A1, and I have M7 and M8 baseplates. Had to go out and get my Type 07 / Type 10 FFL and Class 2 SOT to do any of this. |

Along with the tube, I'm more interested in the base, bipod, and sight. If all that is modeled, I could figure out how much each turn of a knob moves things so I could replicate that either physically or digitally with encoders embedded in its 3d printed surrogate. Having the ability to put a rotary switch in the firing mechanism to sense if it's safed, command fire, or drop fire is useful too. I'm very interested in the sight and how that works. I've yet to find anything describing the accuracy of the bubble levels (which is controlled by tht radius of the vile typically). I'm curious how much the how the course and fine adjustments change things. Same thing for the bipod and it's elevation and cross level dials. |
