I don't recall ever having a load shoot this bad from any AR.

23.5 and 24.0gr H4895
2.255"

Attached File

Looks like it might tighten a little at a lower charge, but not enough to sacrifice speed. Has anyone gotten a consistent pucker when seating down to 2.23-2.24" with these particular bullets?

Just for the sake of asking, have you tried the factory loaded ammunition at all?

I bought a box of the Match load Hornady of this

Did not shoot well at all

75g Hornady Black ammo was better for my BA 223 Wylde

The factory load shot good enough for me to buy some to load, I have not done so yet.

I shot some amazingly small groups with the factory loads of 73gr Hornady ELD which prompted me to buy a couple boxes to hand load.  My first (and only) test so far was with 8208 and the only decent groups were at such a low velocity

I personally haven’t been a fan of 8208; I’ll try some Varget or RE15 where I know I will have better results

Ive tested mine with 8208 XBR, loads from 22.7-24gr.  I never could get them to shoot worth a damn.  I think the big issue is the ogive profile and the amount of jump.  You look at the SMKs and Hornady BTHP bullet profile, they have alot less jump.  Tangent profile bullets probably arent more tolerant of jump, but due to the bullet profile they just jump less.  Secant profile has alot of jump in an AR.  I think seating at 2.260", with my Criterion match barrel, Im seeing jumps around .160" which cant be good for accuracy.  I ran thru a whole bunch of bullets, and here are the measurements on the 68-77gr bullets:

68gr Hornady BTHP  LC  2.310"  .043"
69gr Sierra SMK

LC  2.310"  .026"
69gr Sierra TMK

LC  2.310"  .075"
73gr Hornady ELD  LC  2.310"  .113"
75gr Hornady BTHP  LC  2.310"  .570"
77gr Sierra SMK

LC  2.310"  (have not measured)
77gr Sierra TMK

LC  2.310"  .138"

Bullet, Case, OAL (using ASC mags), and distance from lands (forum software keeps making this ugly, but you get the idea)

Traditionally I have had the best luck with 68s and 69s from my guns.  The 73 ELDs I just cant get them to shoot.  I bought a box of Hornady 75s to try for fun, time will tell.  The 77 TMK and SMK always shoot pretty well.

From the US Rifle Teams forum:

"2 years ago Hornady gave out small bags of these at Perry. At the time I was shooting their H75 BTHP at 23.5g H4895 seated to something between 2.225 and 2.230. The H73 ELD-M bullets from Perry "looked" like H75's with a tip so I simply seated them using the same ogive numbers. Because of the tip the OAL was different than the H75 and I am not sure what that was. I can tell you the measurement to the ogive was 1.820 with the tools I have.

We tested that bullet at 200 yards. The two tens easily could have been me, or you could look at that, say there is a vertical dispersion, and slightly adjust the seating depth. These were shot from a Keystone Bartlein 5R 1-7 barrel. (Pic shows 7+ shots strung 1:00-7:00 about 1.2 MOA)

I used them in a following 200 yard match shooting a mid ring 10 clean in slow prone. If they were offered in bulk I might start using them.

I looked and had a few of those and seated one to 1.820. OAL is 2.268, which must have fit and worked fine in my mags. The H75 BTHP seated at 1.820 is only 2.235". "

I’m assuming they used the same powder charge as well?  I’ve got 5-6 pounds of H4895 and a couple hundreds of these left...I’d love to make some use from them

Had a chrono session today, so my shooting wasn't the best, but there may be a node at 25.0-25.5gr CFE223, seated to 2.250". Closer to a group than a pattern, and the SD will probably be good (basic Chrony, I have to calculate).

maybe try seating them to 2.310" and run ASC stainless or HK 416 mags?

Yep, I did a no-no and copied your recipe. *Breakin'TheLaww.gif*

Those velocities are from an 18", correct?
My SD was 16-18, when the 1st shot HV outliers were removed.

Yes but I get almost identical velocities from a suppressed 16” barrrel.

Not sure how you're seating Hornady 75gr BTHP half an inch off the lands?

This was mostly a preliminary test for a Bullseye friend who'll be reloading .223 on a Dillon. I figured the ball powder would require less setup on his part, and I was curious about velocity. CFE223 gummed up my Lee PPM, so I switched to the RCBS Uniflow.

Same gun as in the OP, but with a big, cheap 6-24x42 scope set at 16x. Bore had 40 rounds of 52gr BTHP/CFE223 by this point. The time it took me to reset the chrony and pickup brass between 10 shot strings is all the cooling time the barrel got. I wrote down the numbers instead of recording audio on my phone for some reason, so my shooting wasn't great and I'm a 0.2 MOA mean radius shooter at best.

Attached File

Basic F1 Chrony at 16.85ft.
52gr BTHP/25gr H4895 calibration: 3093fps. XM193 calibration: 3234fps.
Seems at least 100fps faster than actual speed.

At least 2x fired, FC cases trimmed to 1.747", ID 0.218", OD 0.244", flash holes deburred, 2-4 thou shoulder bump. Primed with CCI 450s.
73gr ELD at 2.250" OAL.

24.5gr CFE223:
"Not again..." was my thought after a few shots.
2733, 2676, 2698, 2652, 2704, 2678, 2685, 2644, 2682, 2682
Avg: 2683
ES: 89
SD: 24

While testing the 52gr BTHP, I noticed a tendency for the 1st shot of a string to be fast. Without the 2733 outlier -
Avg: 2678
ES: 60
SD: 18

25.0gr CFE223:
"Hey, there might be something."
2740, 2759, 2761, 2744, 2772, 2752, 2727, 2742, 2772, 2719
Avg: 2749
ES: 53
SD: 17

25.5gr CFE223:
"Oh shit! That's actually decent!" I definitely hurked a couple, so I excluded them from the impact spread.
2838, 2860, 2821, 2875, 2849, 2846, 2853, 2840, 2853, 2822
Avg: 2846
ES: 54
SD: 16

It's a shame that the chrony is (hopefully) miscalibrated, but the SDs are decent, and the ELD is worth further development using the 25.5gr node.

Attached File

The cases came out cleaner than my extruded powder loads. No noticeable swipes and, maybe, the radius on the magnum primers just started to tighten on the 25.5gr string.

Looks like you are getting it figured out.

CFE 223 I has become a go to powder on my 223 and 308 loads.
