Through a rare set of circumstances, I came into a free Garand and a free, unchambered 6.5 caliber Garand barrel blank (apparently only one of two in existence) made by Criterion years ago. I was torn for a while about modifying the Garand from it's original form, but eventually decided that since the receiver had some heavy pitting below the stock line and it bring far from being parts correct, it would be a good candidate for the project.

My plan is to disassemble and rebarrel the gun in 6.5 Creedmoor, do some accurizing, and mount the M1C style scope to it.

@Fluffythecat

Think he built a 6.5 Swede.

That’s awesome man! Last year when I decided I’d need to rebarrel one of my M1’s, I was REALLY hoping somebody would make a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. No luck. I could find 6.5 Swede, but that’s not what I wanted.

I tired to get a custom 6.5x55 made and I couldn’t even get one made.

Everyone I tired said no. Everyone will make an ar custom..

Things have changed for sure.

I’m stuck waiting for the back order to be filled.

That's awesome.  I feel cool with a .308 Garand

Looks like a good project.  Have fun drilling and tapping the Garand receiver for the M1C base.   I thought D&T 1903A3s was a little challenging.  The Garand receivers are harder than woodpecker lips.

I think that's neat as Hell.  So long as you don't permanently damage any of the parts, I don't think that's an unacceptable adulteration.  Honestly, i'd investigate some of the few synthetic/tactical stocks for this project, as the stock is going to be your biggest hinderance to getting the most out of that (I think).  Or at least glass bed it.

(not mine)

Should be a really neat rifle once done

I debated doing for well over a year, but I finally decided that since the receiver wasn't in great shape and fairly pitted below the wood line, I didn't feel so bad about drilling the receiver for an M1C style scope mount.

Griffin and Howe started making these mounts again, so I snagged one. The Shop Manual does a great job and has a drawing that lays out the bolt holes on the side of the receiver. I used a carbide 2 flute drill and it buzzed right through the hardened receiver.

Though showing "Out of Stock," Criterion offers an M1 profile barrel in 6.5 Swede.
