 TNVC recently completed a Nightfighter 101 class at The Clinton House Plantation in Clinton, SC on Mar 15-16. We always have a great time teaching NF101 and enjoy watching students have their “eye opening” moments. The Clinton House Plantation is a superb location for us. The facilities are great, the hosts amazing, and the ranges work well for our class. Lodging is on site and there are a lot of food options nearby. The weather looked as though it was going to be a problem this weekend. With forecasted rain and high winds throughout the two-day class the instructors and students alike were ready to pay to play. The first night had pleasant temps and although we started to fight some wind toward the end of the night everyone went home dry. The second night we couldn’t have asked for better weather. A light breeze to keep everyone cool and some clouds that would drift past the moon giving our students different lighting conditions to process throughout the night. We saw a wide spread of night vision devices and lasers in this class. No student complained of being under-equipped, we were able to complete all the drills with little difficulty. While the technology performed well, we did see some problems with accessories. Witness marking and blue Loctite are your friends. Students coming to class spend a lot of resources (time, money, gear, days off, etc.) to come to a class. Running gear that is not necessarily proven can be a detriment to your training experience. We cannot stress enough the importance of making sure that the equipment (rifles, pistols, and attached accessories on both) that you plan to use for the class all work well together. A quick dry fire session to make sure everything is where you want/need it takes about 5 min. It will also allow you to focus on the class instead of how you are going to activate, or not active, technology because it needs to be moved. All these issues were resolved during quick reload breaks, to include a red dot that rattled loose. Night Fighter 101 is the first step into becoming someone who is “confident, competent, and capable” in the use of night vision technology and leads directly into our Night Fighter 201, where we continue to expand on the principles learned in Night Fighter 101. Now that the students understand the skills, Night Fighter 201 allows the students to practice the application of those skills. Additionally, several companies stepped up to offer students swag and door prizes for their attendance. We really appreciate their generosity and are proud to have them associated with our classes.
