| Haven't seen anything good or bad about it. Want a 22 lever action so Henry and Rossi and Heritage are options but they are not take down. Any opinions appreciated. |

I have one. It's the version with a pistol grip stock, which I chose because it's configured like my Marlin Model 39D. Frankly, it gives the impression of being cheap. Among other things, the receiver is made from some light metal, the forend and forward bands are both either plastic or another light metal alloy with a heavy coating of paint or plastic that gives the feel of plastic. The wood is shaped to about 15/16ths of the way to being a stock. Unlike the Marlin, with its fitted cartridge lifter arm, there's a small aluminum box screwed into the receiver that seems to work kinda like the elevator setup in the old toggle link Winchester designs, hence it being marked for .22 LR only. Odd coincidence that the question was posted when it was: I'm planning a range trip today and the Chiappa has been sharing space in a hard case with the Marlin for months, waiting its chance to get pictures comparing the two. Edited to add: I thought it was printed on the box, but after a quick look there, I think it was in the manual that Chiappa says that it is a classic design, updated for modern manufacturing. They didn't do a horrific job of it, but as someone who loves the old Marlins and the Winchester 9422, this seems disappointing. It is the Model 39, in broad strokes, but it's the details that give room for dissatisfaction. One area where it might be considered to come out ahead is in having a grooved receiver for ease in mounting a scope, which on one hand is handy, but on the other hand would be considered as ruining the lines and is unnecessary in the eyes of some folks. |
