[Last Edit: RRAR15]
I have an AGM StingIR 640 that has this cheapo soft rubber cap that goes over the objective lense to protect it from dust/dirt. I hate that thing because it’s flimsy and just dangles whenever I’m using my thermal. My initial thought  was to get a butler creek flip cap, but due to the battery location, I’m not sure there’s room for it, and even if there was, I don’t think I’d be able to adjust the focus when the cap is flipped open.

I’m looking for something that can protect the expensive thermal glass when it’s not being used, but will quickly allow me to use my thermal AND adjust my focus. I’m drawing a blank here. I was thinking about one of those iris things that people have on their NV, but most of those have a built in sacrificial window that obviously won’t work with thermal.

Anyone have any novel ideas?

Edit: posted my solution on post #7.

The OHC thermal cap is 100% ideal. But they only make it for the RH25. I don’t have a 3D printer.

check out hammy3dprints.com , i have no affiliation besides ordering from him.  i think he sells on amazon also.  he can print up whatever diameter cap you need and include all the hardware to install it

i'll see if i have a pic of mine to give you an idea

Have you actually checked how much rotation you need to focus on the 640? I have the 384, the front lens will rotate 180 degrees or so, but all the focus for near and far happens in about 30 degrees.

you can run the shock cord around the mount or any bump in the housing to make the cap flip open to whatever side you want

here's how i have mine setup

UPDATE:
I found the perfect (for me, at least) solution. It’s a kind of flip cap that is sort of a push button deploy, but the cap part twists out of the way instead of just flipping open. When deployed and when closed, it’s a very low profile solution. Using the included adhesive shim tape, it was a perfectly snug fit on my objective lens. It allows me to adjust my focus without the flip cap slipping.

Added bonus is that the hinge of the cap acts as a cat tail/throw lever for the objective and makes it way easier to adjust the focus on the fly in the dark and also kind of acts as a “zero stop” so you know where to align the focus for normal operating distance. I linked the cap on Amazon below (hopefully that’s allowed). They have a demonstration video that shows kind of how it works.
