It's more a tornado/ storm shelter in ground. It's 8" concrete with rebar. Interior size is 10'x10' plus breeze way. It has a heavy metal door that will be left unlocked most of time so we can run in during a storm. I'm out in the sticks and not too worried about people going into it. I can lock it if I leave or something. It will have power in it and an alarm too. I want to partition a wall or put in a modular safe inside. Something that is built in or put together that can't get out the door. I would like to keep some stuff in there as it's the most fire proof building on the property. We are on a mountain top so it would never flood too. Flood plane is about 300' below us. Looking at possibly snap safe since it's bolt together or those secure it ones too. I don't need fire protection. I was also thinking partition a side of around 3' making a wall with a false door? I could keep some stuff in there hidden? Just looking to keep in the event of someone checking it out snooping around not getting anything. Low crime area but I don't want to get complacent. another option I guess would be some cheaper "RCS's" and bolt them together so they could never come out? I just want something I can get in there myself. Thanks much Updating: so the door is the weak link and not lockable so we can run in. The guy who installed gave some ideas on how to lock it. Another option would be to have a better door made or upgrade it so it can lock. We are in the middle of nowhere but I want to protect against the random meth head that could happen anyplace. the current door is about 36" wide and around 6'4' I'm under 6' and my wife is 5' so it's great for us  here is the handle Attached File I could drill a hole and mourt a piece of angle iron to put a pad lock on it for basic security. Any better ideas? So far after losing at the snap safe XXL double door I really like the size and the door is the same thickness as zanoti (probably not built as well but for general security I like the digital lock and backup key) Or I can get these Winchester 22" wide RCS's from tractor supply for $350 on sale and put like 3 in there and still be way less than the $3500 of the Snap safe. |

Get a Zanotti Z3 6'. I got a Zanotti for the same reasons as you - once assembled in the room it's too large to get out the door. Recent Thread Older thread |

I would cut a slot in the door, so you can extend a piece of flat bar steel to connect to a lock and a chunk of angle iron welded to the frame. Make the flat bar has a chunk of angle welded to it on the inside, so it cannot be pulled thru the slot. This way you can pull the bar out, and lock the door from the outside with a basic lock. Then when you are inside, you retract that bar, so there is no way for someone to drop a lock or bolt thru it and lock you into the shelter. This would give some security from trespassing meth heads, and make sure you can’t get locked inside it yourself. Obviously have a deadbolt or bar on the inside so you can lock it while you are inside too. |

FINALLY Found a locking solution two of these and some carriage bolts (one at top and one at bottom of door. Attached File Attached File nice covered slide bolt that I can lock open or closed. now I need to get some decent padlocks I still want to "up armor the door" a little bit. I measured and it's 11ga 1/8th thick door with angle reinforcement. I figure it's at least RCS level now I"m thinking that fire block closed cell spray foam inside between braces to insulate and put a layer of UHMWPE or smelting not too heavy? |
