I am fairly deeply immersed in the world of rimfire PRS/Nrl22 among other things. In this arena, the 700 footprint, AICS style mag guns are what all the cool kids run. Rim-X, Vudoo,Bergara. Bringing out a rifle of similar concept in the 110 footprint makes a lot of sense, if it can shoot and price can beat out bergara. American made is nice No American made production bolt gun is competitive at the highest level of these sports currently. Vudoo has been the king of the hill, but a top end kitted out vudoo in this sport tops out over 7 grand and a much more affordable option would be welcome |

This example from my collection was made in the early 1970s. Only sporter style .22LR I have ever shot that justifies Lapua Center-X or Eley Black Box Match ammo.  With Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24x50 FFP.  |

I started getting into .22s more as an effort to save money on ammo. Spending that on a .22 kinda defeats that idea. It does look great, and I really like Savage as a company. I paid about $700 for this CZ several years ago, but it's a sweet shooter. Accurate as heck. I don't think I can do better. Attached File A while back I got a Springfield 2020... the jury is still out on that. I need to get a different scope on it and try some different ammo before I declare that it's junk. |

That's about what I paid for my Bergara B14R several years ago. I have no complaints for a precision .22 LR that you want to scope.  That said my CZ 455 Tactical shoots just as well for half the price. Both are 1 MOA 5 shot group accurate at 100 yards.   If you want what is arguably the best production sporter ever made, the Winchester or Browning marked Model 52 re-issue sporters are hard to beat. All three of mine are 1.25 MOA 5 shot group accurate at 100 yards with Sk Std Plus.  The Kimber Model 82 is a close second and equally accurate.  Some other very good adult sized bolt actions include the Ruger 77/22 (although most need some tuning to reach a 1.25 MOA level of accuracy), the CZ 452/453/455 Sporters (453 middle) which while they vary a bit are usually 1 MOA capable, and the Zastava made Zastava CZ99 precision/MP-22/Remington Model 5 (bottom). They are about 1.5 MOA accurate but very affordable.  Of the 3 the CZ is the skinniest and that't not a good thing. The other two have a better "adult rifle" feel and balance.  As an example of CZ variability, this CZ 453 Varmint averages 1 MOA 5 shot groups at 100 yards with Sk Std Plus, but splits the groups between .5 MOA bug holes and not so impressive 1.5 MOA groups, while the CZ 453 American shown above hangs much more consistently around 1.0 MOA. CZ wood is generally boring but sometimes you get lucky.  The Remington 541S was Remington's effort at a higher end .22 Sporter. It's not bad but the plastic magazine design is poor and the pressed checkering and roll marked scrolling drop it a level below the Kimber and Winchester options. It pretty far down my preference list, but the competition is impressive.  In terms of vintage trainer rifles the Springfield M2 (top) and Winchester unmarked A (bottom) are my favorites.  |

After putting a scope on it, I shot it side by side with my CZ while testing different types of ammo, and the groups were not much bigger. It's not a precision gun, and I'll change the stock eventually, but it's better than I thought it'd be. It was a birthday gift and the weather was shitty, so I took him to the indoor range, so he could shoot it that day. This is a pic of his first time shooting. About 7 years ago I found a CZ 513 "Farmer" for under $150. As the CZ budget model it still shared the 452 receiver but with a very simple and very not adjustable trigger, along with a very plain stock and stamped front sight hood. The trigger is truly horrible. But for shooters who can master it, it's quite accurate, consistently holding the 10 ring on an A-25 50 yard small bore target.   The Zastava CZ99 aka MP Precision aka Remington Model 5 (with nicer laminated stock) is another good budget rifle. I paid $175 for this one and $199 for the Remington branded version.

I think those were two different points. 1) .22LR doesn't need a longer barrel, as the round doesn't gain any velocity or accuracy from it. 2) Sight radius is the *only* benefit to a longer barrel on such a gun. Thus, if you're going to use a scope or dot sight, why bother with a longer barrel than you need? |
