Last week I was fortunate enough to get a new to me rifle, the south store had an M1D. I purchased and now would like to have a scope for it. I passed on the Hi Lux at the store, any suggestions on what reproduction is the best choice? Budget won’t work for period correct at the moment. Information on the best cheek rest or anything else about the rifle would be good too. Springfield service grade M1D. No Toole marks on receiver but I don’t think it’s a “special”/ cmp assembled M1D. try to find an original mount at least, my understanding is that the repros are absolute shit. you can get reproduction cheek pads pretty cheap, and can find the mounting and lacing instructions easily as well. hell I can post that page too if I can find it. |

I bought an M1D from CMP about 10 years ago. Also ordered at the time a repro M84 and a repro mount from Sarco I think it was. The mount didn't fit well at all. It wouldn't tighten up properly on the rifle, even with channel locks. I ended up having to take a 5/8" flat washer, cut about 1/4 out of it, and use it as a shim behind the thumb knob. Also had to stone the lower angled locking surface and shim the front vertical locking surface with aluminum. I did get it sort of zeroed, it did stay mostly tight, but it always bothered me that it took these additional steps to just make it work. I don't think I've even shot the rifle since going through all this to make the repro mount sort of work. Since it's been winter and nothing to do I bought another mount from Sarco just last week to play with and see if I could make it better. This one tightened up on the rifle without having to have the washer behind the knob. Progress already. But, when I put the optic in the mount and tried to align the iron sights with the optic I realized the optic was way right and high. I was concerned my abilities may not let me fit it properly by removing material from the locking surfaces, so I did shim both the windage and elevation pads of the mount. It's really close to the irons now- just waiting to go zero and see how the rifle does. I'm much happier with the newer repro mount than the old- but I wonder why they can't just get it right. |
Scope and ring are on ebay. It's Japanese glass and made in USA mount. I have an M1D I purchased from the DCM via their lottery. It came as a complete kit - rifle, scope, base, cheek pad, flash hider, sling,... the whole thing. IIRC, it was $750. I've had it for 30 years but it has never been fired by me. |

I always fuck up and forget if it's the crosshair or the post for POA on the M84, then remember after a clip of poor hits.  then there is the joy of the occasional fleck of sealant getting in the way of the glass too. but boy they are head turners. |
