We use them when packing to go to shows(like Tulsa) generaly w/ a sock on a firearm you can fit two long guns in a hard case safely Don't store firearms in cases or socks but the silicone socks should be fine.as w/ any storage method periodic examination is always a good idea |

| Used them for years, helps keep them from dinging each other up. I do imagine they could wear away bluing just rubbing up against it, but I never noticed any wear that wasn't already on there. I usually only use them on guns that sit in the safe for a long time, stuff that goes out regularly I don't put them in socks |

I've been using the VCI storage bags for many years now and they have been great for protecting guns in a safe or even hidden in areas that might get moisture or dust. The down side to these bags in a safe is they can take up room but they are great for preventing rust and scratches. They can be sealed with foil tape. The best i owned was the ZCORR/ BluGuard bags that had a foil outer cover that made them very tough, i thought they were out of business but i found this link. https://www.tankbarn.com/products/storage-bags?variant=32253681539 |

Contrarian view here. My late brother stored a number of his C&Rs in gun socks. After several years of storage, some of the stocks took on an imprint of the gun sock's fabric. Also, some of the butt plates got a little rusty. A couple of disclaimers, though: 1. I don't know what brands my brother bought. 2. His storage was in a fairly humid basement. So YMMV. |

The other advantage, I think, is in the event of a fire, the covering of the sock may help to protect the gun from the nasty air inside the heated safe. I've seen pictures of safes after fires, and there's a marked difference for papers between ones stored loose, and ones even inside an outer envelop. The fire retardation is usually drywall sheets (gypsum) that outgasses water and so keeps the insides of the safe at the boiling point of water, till all the water is evaporated away. As per your high school chemistry, all the heat energy from a stove's burner on a pot of water is used for the phase change from liquid to gas. Only after the water boils away would the pot start to melt. So the insides of a safe is a 212 F, 100% humidity sauna for hours, till either it burns up or the FD comes and puts out the fire. I'd think a gun sock would help keep that nasty atmosphere away from you guns. Or maybe they melt onto your gun and gum everything completely up! Unlikely as the temp is 212 F until the water all evaporates, the sock should handle that, and if the fire is still going then the contents are going to be a loss anyway. |

I used the Silicon treated ones without any issues. I do spray some CLP and grease and then put it in the silicon treated socks. No issues or rust. |

Thank you, guys, for the comments. My plan for a cold winter day is to drill a hole for a golden rod in the unheated safe. While I have all the guns out, I'll re-oil them and put them in socks. |
