So after I quit 3 gun I got rid of shotguns. But every house needs a shotgun. I got an 870 express, played with it a while and it's a closet gun. I didn't know the difference between wingmasters and the express. Anyway, I tricked out the express and pull it out whenever there is fighting shotgun talk. It's really optimized for HD but I have an AR that I would grab first. Anyway I've moved to the country and decided I need a shotgun in my shed, not willing to give up my closet shotgun I got a Maverick 88... Anyway the other day a came across an police trade in 870., parked with rifle ghost rings.. an 870 I always wanted, for decent money. It needs a mag extension, side saddle, Hogue over molded furniture, it's also a 2 3/4 inch chamber (1979 gun) and the tritium is dead. I could do the first three myself no problem. But it occurred to me that I could send it to WIlson Combat and have maybe the perfect 870, with ALL the doodads, I'm talking 1980s dream fighting shotgun. But that's way more money... like twice what I paid for the gun, where me tricking it out would be about $200 (minus fixing the tritium which would have to happen.) Anyway...I'm in a conundrum- do it myself or send it to Wilson. Who has sent an 870 into Wilson? |

There's nothing wrong with having a 2.75" chamber. Personally I never buy 3" buckshot or slugs anyway. If you want to ream it to 3" you can DIY. Will need to change the ejector though (assuming you can find one). As far as the tritium, this has always been the place to gets vials swapped out: https://tooltechgunsight.com/ Looks like they're still in business. You can do that yourself (if you can find a replacement vial) but drilling the old one out is really difficult without specialized extension drills. I wouldn't waste my money sending an 870 to Wilson. If you want a conventional aluminum side saddle, the Mesa or GG&G are nice, but (like you) I run Velcro and Esstac cards on my primary 870 now and love that. Easy to slap a whole new card on there if I want to, and they fit in AR mag pouches. |

Chamber? Leave it; 3” shells are relatively hard to find. Red dot? Could forefo the tritium. SBS? Might find one with tritium or add it. I’m somewhat in the same position, twice over: 1. LEO trade-in Police Magnum for $250 IIRC. 2 (just in case) 14” barrels from AIM $300 shipped. Magpul furniture but, when it came time to swap, I just couldn’t part with the wood. Needs a side saddle and maybe a red dot. 2. LEO trade-in Police Magnum SBR w/Synthetic furniture for $300. Needs a +1 side sling, side saddle and maybe a red dot. |
