For some reason I have this itch for a 308 sbr. Let’s say a 12 inch barrel range. Maybe shorter. Think short range hog hunting in thick brush. What suppressor should I be looking at?

CAT DD if I wanted a hard use can on a rifle I didn’t care to tune.

Print XH 762 if I wanted a hard use can that’s kinda loud but also lightweight on a rifle I didn’t care to tune.

CAT AKHBAR or Sandman X if I wanted to also use it very passably on small-frames also.

CAT JL Ti if I wanted high performance, willing to lightly tune, and using it in a lighter firing schedule precision gasser.

Torch 762 if I mostly wanted to use it on small-frame 30’s but still perform fine on large-frame 30’s.

They said “no worries”!

Haven’t shot it yet.

I think my Gemtech has a barrel length restriction so that’s why I asked.

Ive been using the LPM Torch 30 on my 13 inch 17 and its been pretty rad. Definitely much quieter than my CAT DD, and noticeable quieter than my CAT ODB and Hux Flow 762.

Similar back pressure to the odb(low but not zero) but it is a tad heavy being a brick on inconel (18oz)

This.  Rex cans are tough and pretty affordable and good enough.

I’ll check out the rugged. I love my sub 9. I’m going back and forth between a 12 inch AR10 or the AP5 51. So I would need a not barrel length restriction suppressor.  I’m fine with tuning because I won’t be shooting this without a suppressor. Thanks for the suggestions!

You are going to want something tough and low backpressure for this application. It will likely not be very quiet regardless, so if wearing earpro sound performance is not the top priority. I would look at the Hux, Velos, Infinity 30, or SRBS 7.62 Inconel.

I used Griffin Explorr 300 on my 12.5. Adjustable gas block a must on 308's. I'd probably pick a flow through now but at time they weren't as prevalent . Second reason was being readily available in FDE

I explored this a couple of years ago and then started over a few months ago. Been reading everything I can trying to answer the same question for my 12.5 308 AR. Most of the other responses above have the same info I have come up with but there have been some bad suggestions as well. The following is what I have come up with. I am not an expert.

You are going to have to pick what is important to you- low back pressure, low sound away from the gun, or low sound at the shooters ear. Then add in other factors like weight, flash, and etc. Everything has tradeoffs. Low back pressure or flow through cans are not generally the quietest. But how much tuning of you gun do want versus a little louder. And firing schedule. Are you shooting a few rounds at slow rate of fire or doing mag dumps and practicing for the coming zombie war(joke).

Whatever can you get, check what the manufacture has it rated for. Most 30 cal cans are not rated for 308 below 16 inches. You may have to look hard for this info from some companies. They will claim "duty rated" or "full auto" but when you dig or call the company, they will not warranty the suppressor on a 12.5 barrel. Again, be careful because some companies list 30 cal cans rated to 10.3" but they put this is for 556.

The first thing I have learned, stay away from titanium suppressors for the most part. There is a couple, but they are few. The blast from 12.5 308 is awesome. Most 30 cal cans cannot last. They may take a few shots but will not last for long without damaging the baffles. If you go with these, expect to use that warranty; think Sig Hexium 762.

I want the quietest with some low back pressure. I want to keep it under $2000, 2lbs, and 2 feet. The below list is what I have come up with or has been recommended to me. For heavy duty use.

CAT ODB - 718 model only. This was the only regular CAT suppressor the company rates to be used on a 12.5 308. Other models have been recommended but the company does not rate them to 12.5 308. I guess they released the AKB which is rated to handle 308 from 12.5, the 718 model.

Huxwrx flow 762 Ti - Yeah, titanium but has no barrel restrictions. Just louder due to the flow through designs.  Reportedly the flow through is what keeps the blast pressure from damaging this titanium model. Dunno

Silencerco Velos 762 - Repeatedly this was the answer to the best of everything.

Sandman X

LMT ION 30

Aero Lahar - This one kept popping up on the "lower price" list as a good performer.

LMP Anthem S-2

The first three were the top three on almost every search. There were others but these were the ones repeatedly coming up when doing searches. Anything from Q was not recommended due to the high back pressure. There was some question if they rated their cans for use on 12.5 308. Gemtech had one, just not the best performer.  B&T has good one but get the 718 model. These were not the quietest reportedly. PTR Vent 1 started popping up but just not sure about it, needs more research. OCL has a couple but again they still need more research. They just did not perform (research wise) well compared to the others, but I do not think this included the newest model. There were several older models rated for this use but, their performance was subpar compared to the list above.

And I own suppressors from several companies so i am not trying to get you to buy one or over the other.

Is there experience with the Sig Hexium 762 getting damaged on short .308s?  I hadn’t heard of anything.

Sorry, I was not trying to imply this.

But does anybody have experience with the hexium 762 on a 12.5 308?

My point was this suppressor is rated by Sig to be full auto, heavy duty, no restrictions with a titanium core. They back it up with a claimed no questions asked warranty.  I am betting if you use this suppressor on a 12.5 308 a lot, you will probably need to use that warranty.

I have not seen anybody using this suppressor on a 12.5 308. I have one, and i do not plan to use it on my 12.5 308. I may try it out to see how it sounds, but it would probably only be a few rounds.

The Silencerco Velos 762 has no barrel restrictions and is flow through.   I don't have one and never used one but seems like it might be a good option.

I have one and it was bought specifically for a short barrel (~12.5"), full auto, 308.

I can say the Velos 762 works as advertised.   It is remarkedly lower backpressure when compared to my Sico Specwar 762 or my Sico Chimera.

I just helped a friend build a virtually identical full auto 12.5" Colt 901 to mine and he is running the HUX 7.62 TI on it as he is a lefty so low backpressure is generally his highest priority attribute (over cost, durability, mount, suppression, size, etc.)

As a right handed shooter I don't notice much of any difference between his HUX and my Velos from a backpressure perspective.  As a lefty he find both comfortable from a backpressure perspective but gives the edge to the Hux.  Velos is quieter when I have pulled an ear plug to listen as a bystander..... but the reality with ear pro (I wear electronic in ear plugs) they basically sound the same and both reduce the 308 SBR extremely loud report and concussion down a huge amount.  IMHO,  I don't think there is any semi or full auto 308 short barrel rifle you should be shooting without ear pro unless you want to end up with hearing damage so chasing a couple decibels on this type of platform is a fools errand.

The big physical difference between the two is weight which probably translates to durability/lifespan as others have noted.   The The HUX is ~30% lighter (~5 ounces) vs. the Velos being all TI vs. Inconel and Stainless.  Mounts are similar rough course thread to a taper.  Hux there is no secondary retention and its front vents tighten it to the left hand threads on the mount when you shoot it so its been a "two man" job to get his Hux suppressors off his guns on multiple occasion.  The Velos with the ASR secondary retention collar you don't feel the need to crank it down as tight to the mounts taper interface and it also doesn't "self tighten" as you shoot so doesn't get stuck like the Hux mounts seem to.   Cost wise I think my friend paid roughly 40% (~$400) more for the Hux 762 than I did for the Velos 762.

Personally I actually like the extra weight up front as it helps control full auto burst a bit better, the lower cost, and prefer the design aesthetics of the Velos over the Hux "boat fender" look. The jury is still out on durability and lifespan, but as others have pointed out I would be surprised if the HUX matches the service life of the Velos given the material construction difference.

Either way both are great options in my experience, which one is better just depends upon specifically what attributes matter more to you.

I'm a huge SiCo fan - have their latest LBP cans and tons of past gens, but I have yet to pull the trigger on the Velos LBP 762.  That thing is a big heavy bitch.

18.8oz if using Griffin's Charlie Plan-A (16.5 without a rear mount).  I'm in a holding pattern on it.  Hoping my inbound DL7AM (~15.9oz with Ti ECCO HUB rear mount) satisfies my 762 LBP needs.

Mine sounds good on a 16”, but overgasses the system. I need to get an adjustable gas block.
