What brand and model would you stock? Gunshow friend of mine recently pointed out that I should have at least one .40 S&W pistol in stock. Right now, I've got .22 LR, .22 WMR, 5.7x28mm, .380 ACP, 9x19mm, .38 Super, & .45 ACP pistols in stock, along with a few revolvers. Everything on the table is $400 or less at wholesale. Suggestions? |

I'm not a dealer, but for the sake of conversation: I'd say a Glock varient like the 23 or Sig P-series (if used is acceptable). Police trade-ins abound and 9mm conversion barrels are available for both pistols. In my limited experience those seem to be the most common .40 pistols that I see. You'd have as much capital tied up in magazines as you did guns, if you went through Sig route. (Assuming you could find originals). |
| I understand the brand commands a premium, but that should be offset nicely by the caliber choice (diminished popularity of .40). The gun is a work of art (in a robust, tankish sort of way) and an icon. Some manufacturers had issues with the higher pressure of .40 initially, including my beloved Glock. Never an issue with the mighty USP. |

A Sig P226 X5 variant in 40 S&W would be pretty sweet. If you see one of those on the table for $400, give me a call. The stainless frame and longer barrel would make the caliber a fun one to plink with. You could source a 9mm slide for it later if you felt so inclined. Barring that, any SA/DA or SAO P226 or P229 would be good. The mass of a metal frame makes 40 a fun one to shoot. |

Police trade in M&Ps are cheap right now. ETA: many 40s can be converted to 9mm or even .357 sig by swapping barrels. |
