I have had an aftermarket stock on my 10/22 for so long that I had forgotten how it handled stock. During the process of mounting the barreled action back into the factory stock it occurred to me that if I left the barrel band off I could semi free-float the barrel. Is this remotely sensible? |

It’s not, as multiple 10/22 OEM, and aftermarket stock options don’t use it. My hogue stock for example, with green mt barrel is insanely accurate. It fucking ruins accuracy. Only worse option is that international rifle with fore end metal piece, accuracy sucks. |

I have a really old 16” one in a butler creek folder. Needed a threaded bbl, got a Faxon light 16”. Now I don’t have the bbl band on, due to the thinner bbl. It definitely floats, seems just as accurate….but the whole action/bbl will rock in the stock if you try. Action screw just won’t hold it. I’ll probably figure out some shim under the bbl and put the clamp back on. |

It is an aesthetic accessory, not needed in any way. The barrel is held onto the receiver with the v-block and two very long screws. The 10/22 was originally modeled after the M1 Carbine, which has a barrel band....so the 10/22 had a barrel band. Take it off, it does nothing. |

The reason the barrel band is there is because the way the 10/22 barrel is mounted, it's NOT terribly secure, and is very prone to droop. So the uplift from the stock, and holding from the barrel band, try to counteract that and make the barrel more stable. You could probably remove the band without trouble, but free-floating the barrel, I'm not sure if that would really help matters due to the not-terribly-secure way they're mounted. It might be different if you had an aftermarket barrel with a tight interference fit into the receiver. |

| With the OEM stock and no barrel band, I pillar bedded the action and glass bedded the first 2 inches forward of the action screw floating the rest of the barrel. Also a VQ trigger. Threaded OEM barrel with AAC Pilot supressor. It shoots CCI SV into an inch at 100 yards easily. Better than that most days. I'm using the PA 6X scope with the etched horseshoe/dot reticle. Other than the ugly step down at the end of the forend, it works well. I'm thinking about cutting off the part of the barrel band that goes over the barrel and attaching the band to the stock with blind screws or something invisible, just to clean up the look. |

None of my 3 have the barrel band. I refuse to get one with the band because they look so dumb. OEM action and bull barrel in their laminate stock. OEM action with Gemtech Myst integral suppressor in a Magpul hunter stock. Tacsol action and barrel in a KRG Bravo stock. All of them are easily more accurate than I am. The OEM with the bull barrel I used in Appleseed 15ish years ago, I got "rifleman" 5 times or so with it and multiple other people used it to get their patch when something went wrong with their rifle. |

If the stock can flex and touch the barrel with sling or bipod tension, use the barrel band. I tried using the factory polymer stock from a Dick’s Sporting Goods stainless spotter without the barrel band. In an Appleseed Rifleman Boot Camp, under sling tension, the stock would touch the barrel. Accuracy was abysmal. After putting the barrel band back in place, accuracy was very consistent even using a sling with heavy tension. |
