I would go with the 551 LB but it seems like it was limited to 51 imports. :(

JDI does not seem to stock anything. You have to just call Dave and order what you want.

Re: 553 LB vs. 551 vs 551 LB, if a title-1 rifle is your goal, I would go with a 551 LB.

In order to “protect value”. I’m not convinced that another 51 in the wild would impact value vs. the thousands of people probably interested in them.

I'm old so the wait is only so painful.  Deposit early this year for one of the 5 Heavy Metal 553s.

Aren't the HM 553s due in in the next week or so? The 550s are on the way

I picked up my 553 LB Heavy Metal today, been waiting a long time for a 55x gun. Dam thing is cool, waiting on the AR adapter as I’m putting a brace on mine. Can’t have a loaded rifle in vehicle in Va, my ccw makes this a nice truck gun.

JDI is good to go.  Have gotten a 553, 551, 553r, and 550 from him.  HIs flat postage fee is a little ridiculous but it is still cheaper than ordering accessories from Switzerland.

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to meet 922R requirements on these pistols if you wanted to SBR one of them?

I recently received the stamp for my 553R and was able to make it Sec922(r) compliant.  The US parts are:
(1) Muzzle attachment
(2) Sig USA trigger
(3) & (4) Shooting Sight sear and hammer
(5), (6) & (7) US made Magpul magazine

I have a 551LB on order.  My 922R plan for it is (1) Muzzle attachment, (2) Sig USA trigger, (3) & (4) Shooting Sight sear and hammer, (5) Gatewood Supply follower, (6) Gatewood Supply floor plate, (7) Sig USA buttstock.

I really need to splurge on a green Swiss stock.  The US collapsible green stock that came on my 556 looks goofy.

I've been buying too many Swiss guns lately.  Here's my pair of 550's.

I'd like another swiss gun, and was thinking hard about a 550.

Looks nice.

Off the top of my head, these are the applicable parts for the 553, so you need 7 US parts. I personally chose flash hider, stock (M4 adapter), pistol grip (magpul moe k2 fitted to the lower), hammer, trigger, sear, cocking handle.

Receiver
Barrel
Flash hider
Piston
Cocking handle
Bolt carrier
Bolt
Lower
Hammer
Trigger
Sear
Pistol grip
Handguard
Stock
Mag body
Mag follower
Mag floorplate

522, you mean the 22lr? That’s a US made rifle.

If you mean the 552 COMMANDO, those are Swiss.

Yes, and the 553 replaced it.

The 553 is technically superior. There were problems with parts breakage unique to the 552. It is easily ID'd by its skinny charging handle. The 553 reverts to using the BCG from the rest of the 55x family.

True. I posted this comparison in 2011, sadly the photos are gone. It details the most common failure point for the 552.

https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?76374-SIG-552-and-553-operating-systems-a-photo-detail

553 is a product improved 552. Little known fact, the 553 was actually designed by B&T.

I own two 552s, a 553, and a few 551s. The 552 is neat as a collector item, especially my factory semiauto 552 that’s marked “SG 552-2 SP COMMANDO”. These were imported for and owned by the NC Alcohol Law Enforcement agency. It rarely gets fired, as I have the 553 and 551 SBRs for shooting. The 553 is a constant range companion.

JoshNC that’s very interesting about B&T designing the 553. Any more backstory?  Why or for whom?

I remember reading this comparison back when it came out and again when I picked up my 552. It was very informative, unfortunate the pics are gone. Guessing part of the Photoshop hijack. Anyway thanks for that info Josh! Were all the 80 or so 552s that Midwest sold off NC LE guns?
I enjoy shooting all my Swiss San/Sigs use to be a collecto/ shooter decided life is short and enjoy firing ALL of them!

Thanks! I know I kept a pdf copy of the posting somewhere. But not sure on what hard drive it lives.

Re: Midwest 552s, yes they all came from NC ALE. Pretty awesome rifles, even if the 552 OS is inferior to the 553. I have a 552-to-553 conversion kit, but I don’t use it on my 552. As far as I know, these are the only semiauto 552s imported into the US. That they are marked COMMANDO, have PD history, and are quite rare....very cool. There were only around 70 or so semiauto 552s iirc. That makes them among the rarest Swiss 55x available in the US.

A lot of good stuff in this thread.

My attention is always drawn back to this R model.  Is that a 7.62 x 39 trijicon ?
