I guess the waiting list started last year and just caught wind of it today. I threw my name on the list but the rumored price of 10k makes me hesitate slightly. BATFE has to approve it. I do like the way it looks and it looks better than the current 5.56 upper which I have. https://max-11.com/waiting-list-open-for-new-5-56-belt-fed-upper-and-22-lr-upper/ |

| I'm torn...I always tend to be "late to the party" when it comes to gun stuff anyway, meaning, it took me years to actually figure out that Lage offers bad to the bone stuff for the M platform...I bought a 5.56 upper a few years back and LOVE it!! I just got my VERSA-11 and will be testing it TONIGHT...so...I'm sort of a "let's wait and see" kind of guy. I know that I would LIKE a belt-fed in my life...I don't NEED a belt-fed...or do I....!? |

Also, a closed bolt belt fed isn't a real good idea for belt dumps. |

While open bolt is safer for full belt dumps, it’s not verboten in a closed bolt beltfed. The HK 21, 21E, and 23E do just fine within reason. You don’t want to do back to back dumps, but a single 200 round belt dump is fine. A friend does them routinely with his 23e. It’s basically the only way he shoots. Mine is babied a bit more with 2-4 round bursts at a time, because I like to make hits on target and I don’t want to make my barrels a smooth bore too quickly. |

I would agree closed bolt isn't a huge deal for recreational shooters where the gun should always be pointed in a safe direction and made clear when not actively being fired in a range type setting. I have M2HB, M1919, Shrike, a couple different HK 21/23Es that are all closed bolt beltfeds and don't recall ever having a cook off and have run them pretty hard. However, all of these guns were not designed from the ground up as air cooled beltfed machineguns either. The more "modern" Browning beltfed designs were all originally designed to be closed bolt water jacket cooled after reported cookoff issues with his prior M1895 design. The M1917 in 30 cal and M1921 in 50 were both water cooled designs so there was really no need for them to be open bolt with the barrel surrounded by a water jacket As they were both updated to air cooled designs (1919 and M2) the closed bolt fire control mechanism remained the same as the legacy water cooled design. The HK21/23 and the Shrike/MCR were effectively built off of legacy closed bolt non-belt fed battle/assault rifles (G3 and M16) which means they came with a closed bolt design compromise. While I am sure there is probably some example(s) out there, I can't think of any clean sheet designed air cooled belt fed machineguns fielded post WW2 that was designed to be primarily closed bolt. The world has pretty much moved on from designing new closed bolt beltfed machineguns for military service at this point for probably good reason. Outside of the open bolt vs. close bolt beltfed concerns (which are basically a non-issue in the civilian shooter/collector world), I would agree that the long term prospects on FRTs are cloudy at best. Even if it takes the Federal government a couple of years to pass any legislation banning FRTs and other "rate of fire accelerators" individual States (including many MG legal states) have already and/or are proposing to ban FRTs and that State FRT ban list continues to grow. Personally for me (and for many of the other machinegun owners I know), I just really prefer to own real machineguns vs. semi autos with a rate of fire accelerator triggers. |
