Lee APP tips and tricks (Page 5 of 12)

Well thanks to this thread I got my APP running much smoother depriming 9mm for wet tumbling. I still get an occasional hang up when a case doesn't go into the shell holder all the way but its 10x better than it was. What I did : Switched over to the shorter shell guide (the flat one). Polished the shell holder entrance and center part with a lil polish and the Dremel Put straw from CLP spray can in the spring All the things helped make it better, the most being using the correct shell guide ![]() I notice most of the hang ups are on really nasty cases either being inserted into the shell holder or being pushed out. This is all outdoor range brass from my club that gets a lot of dirt/sand build up in the cases and in the rims. Going to go order the case feeder assembly as loading the single tube my hand sucks. If that works well I think I will switch over to depriming all of my 9mm before wet tumbling. Right now I'm only doing the cases that have dirt built up or are extremely tarnished, those get pins the other no pins. |

I've removed enough upside down cases it's almost instinctive to grab them and toss them back in the hopper and keep going. I've read where someone used a short piece of 1/2" Pex in the 4 holes in the hopper for 9mm.... I haven't tried it though. I switch calibers enough I figured it was going to be more trouble to pick those out of the hopper holes than just removing a few upside down cases. If it bothers you enough, a Dillon case feeder might be the best answer. If you could adapt it to also feed your 550 it could be worth it. |

I have gotten good at flipping them over or like you, return them to the hopper. Even with the upside down cases, decapping is so much faster on the APP than a single stage. Did 2k of 380 last weekend in about 2 hours. Biggest issue was 32 ACP cases stuck inside the 380's which made then too tall to feed. About 60 of them, got about 80% of them picked out by sight before running through APP. Not the APP's fault for the poorly sorted cases stuck inside each other. ![]() |

If I got the standard APP press, the depriming kit, and the primer swadging kit, aside from the tweaks and polishing steps folks have posted here, would I be pretty well set up to run through depriming bulk brass, then swadging primer pockets, again in bulk? Would I simply need the appropriate X-press shell holder for each caliber I’m processing? |

| I’m good with holding off on the swadging tool. The ad copy says the Deluxe model “includes a revolutionary new kind of case and bullet feeder.” I assume the universal case feeder is to keep that one case tube filled? |

The Deluxe model includes the shuttle mechanism and one tube feed. You need to order separately the Universal case feeder that has 4 tubes and another piece is the Collator. So the list is like this: Lee # 90933 - Deluxe APP Lee # 90242 - Universal case feeder American Accurate case collator if your planning on 223 or other rifle brass - https://www.ebay.com/itm/324331921262?_trkparms=aid%3D1110018%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.COMPLISTINGS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D232171%26meid%3Da0c3afde26054891909f87b10490084a%26pid%3D101196%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dpf%26sd%3D292058110662%26itm%3D324331921262%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DItemStripV101HighAdFeeWithCompV3Ranker&_trksid=p2047675.c101196.m2219 or the Lee # 90667 - Case collator I've got both collators and the Accurate works good with 223. 7.62x 39 and 308 not as good, but definitely better than the Lee version. You can definitely put more cases in the AA version. I haven't compared the 2 to see which sends the pistol cases in the tubes upright the best. |

That's why I ask questions here. Thanks for the great (and well illustrated) explanations. And I'm a little more dense than usual at the moment; pain meds are making me a little "simple" lately. |

My APP arrived today. I had a box of 9mm waiting on it, and it worked right out of the box, well outside of the setup. I couldn't be happier! I have read through this thread in advance and was ready for some modification if necessary. Hats off to Blowout. I'm sure there will be some hitches to come. I ordered the Deluxe kit only. No extras. I wanted to see it work first and then decide what I need. Well, hand feeding a single tube is not bad but I can see the "want" for a collator. It seems that all collators fit the four tube system. A simple single tube version would seem to be the berries. Are there any single tube collators out there? |

If you want a single tube system there's always the Dillon case feeder option. The 4 tube system is very fast and only costs $22 plus the Lee collator at $11 or $26 for the American Accuracy version. It wouldn't be worth having a collator for only one tube. For about the same amount time/shaking your filling 4 tubes instead of one. If your planning on rifle cases its worth your while to get the AA version. I couldn't get 223 to feed worth a damn in the Lee collator. I'd end up just hand feeding the 4 tubes before getting the AA unit. |

The universal case feeder was made for the 1000 press and is found under that product when searching for it. It's not explained well that the Deluxe APP only comes with the shuttle mechanism and a single tube feed system. They show a picture of the 4 tube case feeder in their literature/marketing. |

For me right now it's a double hernia in my abdomen repair. I have been avoiding this hobby because of it but later I am going to tear into some hangfire 7x57 and start a remanufactur e of it. Friend sold me a steyr 1912 probably chilian. No crest but the stock has it. So going to clean on that as well. Probably try out the collimator and feed tube assembly on my app which I robbed off my never to be used by me again lee press. |

Hip replacement surgery last Friday. I’m recovering very well, but the pills are an important part of the recovery process. You need pain control so you can move to regain range of motion and strength, and sleep is essential for any recovery. No “strong silent type” stuff here; I want to get better faster so I can get back to the range! |

| I had to try something to make loading the tube better. I think that is part of the attraction to this stuff is modifying and tinkering. Anyway I fitted a funnel on the single tube. My idea was to shake/swirl cases in a tupperware bowl. This tends to orient the cases mostly mouth up. Then I could grab several at a time and drop in the funnel. However, I tried cutting a couple of holes in the bottom of the plastic bowl and let the cases fall through. This works pretty well. I can swirl and bounce the the bowl over the funnel and load the tube much faster than one at a time. I have ran several tests counting the mouth down cases. 87% correctly oriented cases is about the worst with other times in the 90%'s. This doesn't compete with the better collating systems, but sure beats loading one at a time. |

The last few comments have referenced keeping the tube filled when processing 223. I’ve found that it’s much more efficient to remove the tube and just drop a shell into the black piece with each stroke. Much faster than stopping to fill a tube. Once I got a rhythm and both hands moving the press never stops. |

Got the case feeder added today. The included instructions kind of suck but managed to get it working. Was having a little more issues with the case slide not going all the way forward or back at times. Had to really operate the handle with force/speed. Might have to do some more tweaking but it's nice filling up the tubes in a few seconds compared to one by one. Only had two upside down cases in like 300-400 rounds. |

I'll be printing a new bowl soon that's designed for rifle brass. Seems like it would be pretty easy to modify the file for the 4 tube bowl into a single tube. |

I bought a aluminum pan that fit the collator perfectly. Cut a hole in the middle for the case to drop through, but cases would end up getting trapped between the collator and the pan. I tried a duct tape fix to keep the cases from sliding under, but finally said screw it and just bought the collator on ebay. It holds more cases than the Lee and has more taper to get the base of the case to feed first into the tubes more reliably. |

I can't post pics here but here are a couple of links yo my pics. I am having problems with gas checks being too tight and not able to seat them. So I made my own gas check expander. The shell holder adapter is from NOE. The flat piece for the check to get expanded on is a sizing die pusher I made. Then just slid into the sizing die. Works very well. Just real slow. |
|
I sized about 1400 556 cases through the APP for the first time. Then ran them through again with an M die. I noticed cases were dropping from the tube at an angle. One case would land leaning slightly to the side and the case above it would slide off to the side and on to the floor. Sometimes two cases would slip by. I don't recall this as a problem before and didn't figure out the cause at the time. Just started to bulge bust some 45acp and noticed the cases were leaning as they dropped from the tube and the base catching on the jaws frequently as the cases dropped from the shuttle. I noticed the case feeder was leaning quite a bit to the rear. II don't recall it leaning this much in the past and I wasn't able to really find a cause for this. Eyeballing the bottom of the case feeder assembly, it wasn't level to the top of the shuttle. The easiest method to level them I could think of was bending the bolt that holds the case feed assembly. Before: Attached File Easy to see the tubes are not plumb compared to the garage door track. Attached File I removed the bolt and screwed a nut on it until it was just shy of touching head of the bolt. Used a sharpie to mark the bolt head so I could keep track of how it Then ever so slightly bent the top with the head and nut in a bench vise and reinstalled it noting the mark location on the bolt head. After: Attached File I didn't find any wear on the black plastic piece where the bolt head and nut attaches to that would explain the increased rearward lean. I did notice the table top and top of the shuttle are not parallel. I did remove the washer I added under the front of the mounting bracket that was used to reduce flex in the bracket when using the press. It helped slightly, but bending the bolt helped the most. The cases dropped straight from the shuttle to the transfer track after this adjustment. I'll need to try 223 cases again to see if the problem is resolved with those as well. |

So I’ve successfully decapped almost 4,000 / 9mm and 1,500 / .380. Debulged all the .380 as well. Not a bad deal at all. I few quirks, but by far the best decapping method I’ve ever used. Now to my problem. Tonight I was blowing the crap out of the shell holder adapter and stuff went flying across the shop. I think I’m missing a spring that goes in under the hollow pin that pushes up to hold the shell holder in place and not slide out. Looks like LEE might refer to this part as a “detent” in the parts list, but no picture of it to confirm. Can someone look at theirs and see wth I’m missing? |

No, I just slid the shell holder out and blew air in from the bottom (where the plastic jug threads on) and it flew across the shop. I know I'm missing at least a spring because you had to push that hollow pin down to slide the shell holder in. Now the shell holder won't stay in, it just slips out. |

It looks like a snap ring holds the spring and detent in place. Suppose you'll need one of those as well as the spring. The complete assembly is $30 from Titan and in stock. Lee is out. The forced air must have been just enough to dislodge the snap ring. |
