I have a bit of a problem. I have 2 garands that exhibit signs of being sent to England during the war. Possibly lend lease. No red paint is evident. One is a 327xxx and the other is 50xxxx. Both have correct parts for the date range per Duffs book and from years of collecting these things they are not restored. All these parts have been together a LONG time. Here's the problem. They both have -12 RE5B bolts. This is at the early end of correct for the 50xxxx but is way too late for the 327xxx. However,my gut says not to screw with it..... But I still find myself looking at -2 bolts. Please take a look and give me your opinions.

OP many of the LL guns had parts swaped between other LL guns . Not sure why but I've seen it before . Like the previous poster said , you can check for the proof on the bolt lug . It may just be a smudge as their stamps got beat up early in that process due to the hardness of the parts . Another indicator at least on the earlier of the two would be a hand lapped bolt . Springfield had not started short chambering barrels yet and all of those earlier rifles had the bolts lapped to the receiver for head space . I'd probably check the headspace and if good I'd leave it alone . |
